Attention to detail seems to be your basic operating mode. Take whatever time is necessary to get it right, especially with foundations. It's always tough trying to build in the colder, wetter months. As usual a very well done and informative video Paul. It's rifle season here in Virginia and the rut is on. Hope you get a chance to hunt a little with your busy schedule.

Start straight and square, then you build straight and square. Great start, Paul. Is there any engineering or design info you can share? Like another builder, I am wondering how applicable this technique would be on a sloped lot for a walk out or day light basement. FR

I'm assuming this will be slab on grade (as this is post frame constuction). So the ICF will extend above grade and the post frame footing will be on top of the ICF wall? Curious how this works out, I have sloped grade I wound like build a post frame that would result in daylight basement and garage below the main floor living space.

@OP. Pricing for your client. Is the ICF foundation wall, overall cheaper to install than a conventional insitu concrete or block wall and insulated later? I've been led to believe the material cost for ICF is still too high to compensate for the reduced labour costs.
@samt5663

Are there any variables and what are they that would make one or the other more cost effective?
@EdwardTilley
@EdwardTilley 2 жыл бұрын
Great video. I just wondered how are you insulating the slab at the base of foundations? I assume foam panels under the floor and icf insulated cement foundation walls. There must be no need of insulation at foundation footings?
@nneelix
@nneelix 2 жыл бұрын
Footings are structural and weight bearing, you want them on solid ground. Insulation under the footing would compromise this.
@EdwardTilley
@EdwardTilley 2 жыл бұрын
@@nneelix Your explanation makes perfect good sense. I surfed around and found systems that insulate the floor slab from wicking and thermal transfer - from the foundation. I'm a big fan of this post-frame with heated slab floors - and solar-powered heat-pumps :) Great off-grid redundancy, efficiency, and reliability - even if you have to be away for a week - or a month during the winter.
@nneelix
@nneelix 2 жыл бұрын
@@EdwardTilley Oh yeah, slabs are commonly insulated, radiant heat or not. That will likely happen when the slab is prepped between the foundation walls later.

If you didn't have the previous foundation in that area, would the sloped site alone be cause enough for you to go with the ICF? Our build site is at the bottom of a similar slope, so curious. We love the idea of ICF, but didn't know what advantage it had over the piers with regards only to the sloped site. Also curious as others about what you may or may not do with foundation drainage. Thx! Great work!
@MrPostFrame

Hard to say but the soil there was also a factor. You’ll definitely need to be able to keep water from running towards your site no matter what.

I too follow Kyle of RRBUilding. I dream about putting up an outbuilding for a shop. I could live with 32x32, but if I built it 40x48 I could park my fifth wheel in it. If I do, it will likely be slab on grade as we're sitting pretty much on solid rock. When we built the house it was dug with a 320 CAT excavator with a ripper tooth. My frost wall on the walkout is only down less than 2' as it's on solid granite. One of my deck posts is pinned to granite that's pretty shallow. I don't know if I would use concrete set post anchors or use the ones like he anchors with SIMPSON screws. I have radiant heat in my house and garage and would want it in the shop as well. I'd want a 2 post lift as well.

Nice looking but way over kill. Next time build pad and then 16 inch trench 4 ft deep. Lay 1x48x84 foam on inside to outside of trench. Fill concrete level and footer is done all in one day.

Its a little confusing why someone would both with pole shed framing if they bothered to pour a footer anyways. Wouldn’t standard stud construction be superior?

Not per say. A continuous footing was used in this case because there was an existing foundation site and it had a lot of limestone. Post frame still made sense.

Long time subscriber here. Im curious why did you build this house with an icf frost wall as opposed to the piers you did on your house given they are both slab houses? Is one a better and/or cheaper option? Is it a permit issue? Either way its good to see a different option for a foundation. Always a pleasure
