You and a couple other people inspired me to build one and I DID IT! I just have to add the vises, sand and stain. Never built even a box out of wood and I did all the mortises, tennons and assembly myself and it looks amazing. Yours is much more refined but I'm very happy with mine. thank you!

In a comment above Richard Allen said he could almost buy two Sjobergs benches for the price of just the timber (using Ash). The cheapest, simplest of those I've found was around $500 (on eBay), but one more comparable to the bench in this video would likely run closer to $2,000 I think.
@BrandonVMoore1
@BrandonVMoore1 4 жыл бұрын
Of course one thing many people don't realize is that you don't build something like this for yourself to save money. Companies who purchase a lot of materials (in any industry) typically get better prices than individuals can to the point that even after they add their labor and profit into the price you often aren't saving much money by trying to build it yourself.
@BrandonVMoore1

@MattEstlea
@MattEstlea 6 жыл бұрын
The timber was around £800 if I remember correctly. The timber supplier I used was called Tyler Hardwoods and are based up towards Hungerford. You have to go there knowing what you want as it's all stacked up high but can still sort through the boards once they have forked them down. Its a really great and welcoming sawmill, I love going there!

Hey Matt - how much BF of lumber did you end up getting? I've seen estimates on 150-200 board feet of material for a split top roubo style bench - just curious what you ended up needing - and how much was the top vs base 60/40 etc??

Nice, but how to do bench like this without large machines?
@Caldermologist
@Caldermologist 6 жыл бұрын
Start by building two massive sawhorses. Cut the timber for the half of the top that does not have any vises to rough length, and plain their faces flat and parallel. Then glue them together. Use that as your workbench for making the leg components and the front half of the worktop. Doable, but of course it will take time.

I don't see why you need to plane the edge of the board. If your table saw fence is parallel to the blade, that should square up the edges, and you just need to plane the one remaining face.
