Been building rustic birdboxes of found materials and wood for years. Thanks for the idea of the brad nailer, which I now have and love - mine a little bigger and heavier, but wonderful device. Have to confess the music almost made me quit a couple times. Muzak x 2. Bird boxes are wonderful creative outlets when you live in the country and have lots of material!

Birdhouse was really clever. I’m going to try to make one. Liked your freehand drawing of the house. Great idea!! as for the music, yeah it was a little annoying, but anybody working with saws and blades, and moving machines, also know how to mute the sound.

Thanks for the video. I did make a “hinged” bottom by fitting a single angled piece inside of the bottom. The “hinges” are a single brad nail either side of one end and a bent finish nail as a latch at the other end of the bottom piece. Pull and twist the nail and the bottom becomes a trap door to clean out the previous year’s nest. Cheers.

Great design and always a great idea to help birds nest safety, pretty design but needs a hole or two in the base to allow for drainage ...... also, airflow could be an issue, so some gaps in the side will help. Hope you used copper brads or rust will result in the whole thing falling apart after a year or two.

There are four holes in the bottom already for drainage. My only concern is no way to open it to clean old nesting material out.

I am new at bird houses and am wondering if a perch is or is not standard for bird houses?
@MarksWorld-GetOutdoors
@MarksWorld-GetOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Brian, Good Question, some birds require and some do not..usually individuals will not put a perch on houses for smaller birds because they don't need a perch to land it would provide a larger bird to land and possibly cause issues for the babies or smaller bird. I really don't have a problem with other birds. I have a house that the sparrows are using and I added a perch so I could film the mother feeding the babies.. I have a video on my channel showing that... when I didn't have the perch she land in the hole and you could see the feedings...I was able to get some good video with the perch. Thanks for watching the video and if you have any other questions, please let me know. Very important to have a clean out... on this house I ended up replacing the nails in the bottom with 4 screws so I could take the bottom off at the end of the season and clean it out. Have an awesome day.

great job man just couple of things from a builder's point of view when u cut that little piece for the back that should be put in the middle like 2 big pieces up 2 down and small piece in the middle it balances the design second the last piece put on the roof (or top) should be 2 pieces of probably an inch each cut at 10/12 angle and then put it on like a ridge cap. why did i say 10/12 cause of your design this birdhouse looks like those old houses with 12/12 roof pitch

Lee first off thanks for watching the video... after the season ended last year... I pried the bottom off and removed the nails and replaced with 4 screws... I thought about putting hinges on the floor and a hook, but decided taking out 4 screws once a year wasn't really a big deal... when I make it for someone else I do put a couple hinges and a hook for them. Hope that helps... didn't go back and re-do the video, because for the first 7 months this video only had 100 views... now it has 28K... I guess video can be seasonal also, which I never thought of... since I have only been posting video's for 11 months. Again, thank you for watching and asking a question... Have an awesome day.

I put in two nails in the back of the floor on either side as a hinge. One nail in the front to keep it from opening. Just put the front nail out, floor swings open and just let the old nest drop out. I call it, "swing and clean." I sell a lot of houses.@@MarksWorld-GetOutdoors

Lee Fury yep that’s another way for the single front one I will use a cut off double headed nail.. so it’s like a little handle ... that’s great that u making houses also .. I’m getting ready to make a outhouse birdhouse ... probably Wednesday .. it going to be fun...

If it is an "antiqued" house, I will use an old, shortened, rusty nail for a pull tab. But I still have another means for locking the either the floor or a side from opening. You need a pull tab because sometimes with age and moisture, the wood expands and doesn't swing open as easily. ALWAYS use spar urethane on exterior but never on the inside. Little birds will peck at the interior. Don't give them any finish to peck off. @@MarksWorld-GetOutdoors

One more trick I do is glue in a piece of aromatic cedar inside with a good shellacking of cedar oil every new season. Yes, I take down my houses in the fall.

Really sharp hole saw if it had done a lot of tear out when cutting I probably would have .. it’s a rough cedar and has slivers all over it.. it’s funny watching them sometimes I’ll have 2-3 on the face of the birdhouse just holding on

Oh my god, who ever cleans out a bird house once it's up? They are functional ornamentation. The dozen bird houses we have in our yard get used every year and we never clean them out. Look at how many nests get used year after year. Case closed.
