This video reminds me that ‘the more you learn, the more you realise how little you know’. I’m speaking of myself here.... thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Working my way through these early videos intending to buy your course once I’ve seen them all. I have several old growth yellow cedar rough cut 2x8s calling for a project.

I'm sourcing my materials to work with your method of canoe building. Thanks for the inspiration! You mentioned hitting rocks in this video, being rough on the boat. How durable is a skin on frame canoe?
@capefalconkayak5 жыл бұрын
Hey ray, they are by no means indestructible but much tougher than they look. I've put about 1000 boats on the water in the last 17 years and I've only seen 4 on the water punctures all of them under extreme circumstances. It's tougher than a carbon canoe, but not as tough as some of the new high tech laminates. Maybe similar to a medium weight kevlar boat. Not quite as abrasion or puncture resistant but far more impact resistant.

@@capefalconkayak Thanks for the reply. It's a unique design, something I can build myself in Newfoundland. I always dreamt of building a cedar strip canoe but that is a very difficult task in my place in the world. Thanks for the option without having to sacrifice function or style!

Looking so cool already! Thanks for this look over your shoulder. :-) Just one question: What glue are you using there?

Titebond 2 was shown in one shot. But it's not the honey-colored stuff that foamed.

Brian, I was wondering why you used laminated boards for your gunwhales? Thanks for sharing your design process with us.
@capefalconkayak6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I laminate because unless you are doing diagonal lashings like the geodesic lite craft boats, a flexed or bent sheer will never hold it's shape, which is why most of the skin-on-frame canoes people build end up with ugly sheers and hogged keels. You could saw the curve, but it's not as strong and wastes a lot of wood. Another approach is a more flared section where the natural flare of the gunwale makes the curve, but that's not the shape I'm aiming for.
