That ground looks so nice to dig me and my mate whos also ex military started to dig out for a shelter ( here around 12-18 inches down its solid clay ) but sadly all the woodland around here has now been divided up and sold off so is now privately owned and you can no longer go there to camp and parts of it you can no longer even walk through its sad really because i spent my childhood and early adulthood up the woods camping and enjoying nature something my son has hardly got to experience.

Raised clay sides under the edges of your roof structure , and a ditch would help keep the water out , but it will still leach in through the soil eventually .
