Having a purpose brought building for the layout is the way to go, definitely needs windows though not just for obviously letting in light but added ventilation in the summer months , heat definitely isn't good for a layout. My own layout is in our attic and is equally subjected to cold and hot conditions but I've worked with these situations allowing for them. I've also built it in exactly the same way you're talking about doing yours but mine is loosely based on places I've visited and is designed around a viaduct with a small river and watermill along side, there's a big waterfall, a slate quarry and rolling hills, Drystone wall's feature throughout. The Hornby Harry potter station building " Goathland" takes pride of place as the main station alongside sidings that house a coal yard, timber merchant and the obvious goods shed, and small engine shed/ servicing hut. A small second station was added later. Yorkshire - Derbyshire and Wales are the main inspiration of the layout which is single track through the scenic detailing with double track in the stations to allow storage or change of running train 🚂🚃🚃🚃 and lot's and lot's of sheep 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑 if you're going for sheep better start collecting them now they're becoming harder to get hold of. Imagination is your license to create and I'm certain that you'll be inspired by your thoughts and create an amazing layout 😁🚂🚃🚃🚃.

I liked the way the shed looked and how it leaves the barn for the chickens or whatever, but your excitement for the train in a train pulls me that way because your excitement is what matters most, after all it is for you and you get to do the work. For example, I was not sure I would be glad you left Silverfox, but now I am. You have to please yourselves and your excitement will win the day.

I love the ideas! I say the carriage would be the neatest but if you think of resale value, you'd probably be better off getting a shed that can be converted into something else when you sell the place eventually. Carriage is the way to go definitely, I had a fantastic oo Gauge as a kid with tunnels villages little people loved and had so much fun building up over the years with my late dad, look forward to watching the progress with trains like the flying Scotsman ete

Definitely a vote for the railcar idea here. Also consider checking out any local model railroad modular groups. If you comply with their standards (height from floor, track centers, ...) you may be able to take some of your modules to their meets, plus meet others in the hobby and possibly get some assistance along the way. I would love to see an HGV bringing a carriage in. I found it fascinating watching silverfox being transported. So if the carriage is the option you decide on then rig the load with cameras for the journey ❤️

The carriage idea, although a good one I think it would end up being too narrow. The barn conversion, as others have pointed out would add overall value. Having a garden room would tick all your boxes, would come in sections - easy to erect, also heating and ventilation would be easier. If you still want a train set to ride on - build a garden railway around your small holding - you could have a steam train or electric (battery). Anyhoo have fun guys.

I like the Train Carriage idea. It also means that you can sell it on if you move on again in the future. It's not a fixed asset as such. But, whatever you choose to do it will be great to see it build over the years.

Convert your existing building, and you won’t have the extra hassle of sousing and transporting a van or shed. All your ideas will require building materials anyway. It will be more secure and add value to your property. You can easily make the exterior of the building look like a waiting room, ticket office, etc. Did you include the cost of providing the electrics to your buildings?

Buying a railcar would be easier and save a lot of work if the cost is comparable. I have worked on my layout for over 20 years and the cost has been substantial even though I have a basement. I have the land, and if I had to do it over I would have purchased a Railcar and saved a lot of sweat and money. Converting the Barn would be time consuming and a lot more work than purchasing a Railcar. I wish You the best of luck in your endeavor. Ray USA

I love the idea of the old railway carriage but honestly, I think a new 'shed' would be the better idea in the long run. Aside from being new and easier to get into place, you could add to it quite easily if you want/need more space. Also wouldn't there be permits needed to move a train car? Whatever you choose, looking forward to seeing it!

Sounds great. We rescued two old carriages that were going to be broken up and burnt. They were amazing and we loved them. They arrived on a normal truck. I think they didnt have the wheels. Have to say tho we didnt end up refurbishing them but sold them on as we didnt have enough time or money to do them up but we felt at least we had rescued them. I think you will love having a carriage and model trains set up inside will be awesome.

The train carriage sounds great and would be a good look for a model railway layout. That said, I think it could have the potential to throw up many problems. I think a custom made sectional shed would be much less stressful and you could design it to look like a station building, if that appeals to you. Whatever you decide, I look forward to following your progress.

Yeh, my vote is for a carriage!! :-) I grew up on a farm that had a carriage down the orchard, was bought by my Grandfather and used as a den for my Dad and his Siblings, then used by myself, my Brother and our Cousins as den but as 2 of us were girls we hung curtains at the windows and had ornaments!! Also tried my first cigarette in there, didn't like it though! Lol!!! That brought back happy memories!! :-)

7.25 inch garden railway - Proper ride on - then you can setup the barn as your maintenance shed and run rail (usually cheap steel flat bar) around your estate ! huge fun.

So this is very practical of me - and you maybe don't want to hear it ...but 'bear with'...you will never make an old train carrage as sound as the shed - and also a shed can come in, in parts...but you could make the shed look like a railway station - with platform, signs etc.

I can only think of two possible drawbacks: 1/ Would you need/get planning permission? 2/ Would the carriage be too narrow/oblong to allow you to build it as extensively as you appear to want to do? Would the barn, I assume being a more rectangular shape, allow a more flexible and extensive layout aligning more with Colin's dreams? Good luck with whatever you choose. Your home, your choice...but since you actually asked..! (I can see Shaun wincing now..)... you've mentioned perhaps in future getting other animals, so taking up more of your limited ground with an additional building would reduce your animal space, also, you still have a good strong existing building that could benefit from the funds and have the potential to be multi-use in future...mrs cautious here would use the money to fix up the outhouse/shed - but I'd be happy to send a few pennies your way to support whatever you choose - the train carriage does sound fun and unique!

The land for the trains wouldn't be used for the animals as it's not suitable. They would be out in the croft on proper pasture land. The costs all equal the same, so ultimately, it's what looks and works best for us 👍🏻

The purpose built shed, fully insulated and wired would be my first choice. The carriage is too narrow for OO gauge, unless you just want to build an end to end layout. Converting the barn would give you a later higher resale value but it would be tricky.

We never mentioned a purpose built shed 😂 The carriage is not too narrow. A full 4th radius (widest) curve will easily fit inside with space each side. Not interested in resale value, otherwise we'd build a conservatory 😂

the whole model railway thing is about an alternative world to be imagined . so the location inside a carriage boosts the imagination even more and ads deeper feelings to the adventure. go for train in train!... and it is easier to heat and insulate. negative: you may have to built a bedding for the tracks to get a solid foundation.

As nice as using an old train car would be, I think a new building would be preferable if not only for the additional space you would get but also for the possibility of expansion at a later time if you need it. I can't imagine the cost of installing a section of track then purchasing/moving/refurbishing an old train car would be significantly less than a newly-built structure. And while a train car would certainly be a point of interest, a new-built structure might make the property easier to sell in the future - not to mention that a train car limits the size and shape of the layout and the working room you will have to build and operate it. Any way you choose - good luck!

My intention was to say I wouldn't think that the unique-ness of having a train car would be as valuable as having a new-built structure; that while using a train car would be quaint and interesting, the benefits of a building (resale value, future expansion, etc.) would be more valuable for the same price. Funny how my original reply sounded right in my head when I thought about it, but it didn't translate all that well into print... 😏
