After deciding that we wanted to build ourselves a little cabin, the price of wood skyrocketed! Not knowing if and when prices would come back down, we played with many options. We needed to build something bigger than what we were in before without going into crazy debt. #offgrid #walltent #coloradoyurtcompany # tent #tentlife #praisegod

Good thing you have that little boy there to retrieve tools and faster that you drop between the boards and your deck.

Awesome! How exciting. Glad we could help. Not sure if you have a company in mind, but if not, we went with Colorado Yurt Company. They were really helpful! Let us know if you have any questions. Quick note: We used true 2”x4” wood (not store bought) and we are very happy that we did!

love it! Are you still living in it? My wife and I are trying to decide which wall tent company to go with to live on some land in Maine while we develop our homestead. I love the wood frame, but most of the companies seem to use metal poles instead and one told me not to use wood. What's your experience so far?

Hey! So, yes, we are still living in our tents. We purchased ours from Colorado Yurt Company. The prints for the deck layout says to use store bought 2x4s but we recommend using true 2x4s for extra support. We don’t have any experience using any metal framing but we are really happy with our wood frame. Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any more questions and if you choose to go with Colorado Yurt Company, ask for Stephen! He was a big help for us!

Have a question, are the dowels necessary? I might possibly be putting up 3 tents and I’ve been trying to figure out how I’m going to do the ridge pole and the center poles, The tent blocked the view of how you guys did that in the video, What do you advise? Thanks
@daltongangoffgrid9376
@daltongangoffgrid9376 Жыл бұрын
Good morning! So, the dowels are pretty important because they keep the center poles in place. I just watched the video again and I see what you are saying about it being blocked; We inserted the ridge pole first and laid it down, trying to place the pre drilled holes “about” where they needed to be. We then inserted the center poles, with the dowels, from the side of the tent. This is where it gets tricky and if you have any extra hands, now would be the time to utilize them! Lol We had one person per center pole all lift at the same time. If you don’t have any extra help, you just lift a little at a time. It can be done but it would be very tricky with some extra “think outside the box.” Hope this helps! And we are super excited for you about your tents! God bless.

@@daltongangoffgrid9376 thanks for the quick response! I appreciate the scripture at the end. A couple more questions if I may: 1. Are the center poles fastened to the ridge pole in anyway in addition to the dowels? 2. About how long do you think it will take 2 people per tent install? The decking and sides are already done by the way. all is left is unfolding the tents, securing with ropes and lifting with ridge pole and center poles, it’s a 16x20 tent with 3 poles I think. 3. How do you fasten the center poles to the decking once they are upright? As for raising the ridge pole, We had planned on putting ladders on each end and lifting them on each rung as need be. Thanks again!
@daltongangoffgrid9376
@daltongangoffgrid9376 Жыл бұрын
Hey Chris! 1. Nope! Just the dowels 2. It will probably take about an hour or 2 depending on how strong your help is. Lol My husband is way stronger than I am so I was able to help him attach the ties while he tightened them. That took the longest time because you have to make sure it’s all even. The tighter your canvas is, the longer they last. When they are loose, they flap in the wind and that wears on them. *something tricky when you tie/attach your ropes before you raise your tent* if you tie them too tight, it’s hard to stand the center poles up. But if you tie them to loose, your center poles will wobble. Gotta find the happy medium. And then after your tent has been raised, you can tighten the ropes some more. 3. We fastened our center poles to the deck just by screwing them in with larger screws. Technically, you don’t have to do that but we chose to just for extra security. Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any more questions!

Thank you for sharing. Wondering if you can share the name of the company where you bought the rain fly and the size of the one that you purchased? I was also wondering what diameter dowels that you used to fix them I think perhaps in between the planks of the deck before you screwed them in?

Hey! So, we purchased our tents from Colorado Yurt Company and we got a 12’ x 14’ tent with the extended 8’ rain fly and then we also got the 16’ x 20’ with the extended 8’ rain fly. We used 3/8” dowel rods

@@daltongangoffgrid9376 Thank you so much! Is the rain fly separate that it can be purchased outside of buying the tents? I am interested in perhaps buying a Bell style tent and I noticed that shelter logic has a 20 foot long by 12 foot high and 13 foot wide shelter. I was thinking of using deck sections as the base for the tent and then screw in the shelter logic into the sides of the deck that I create for the tent. If I had a larger deck then I would’ve gone with a larger tent but the most I can go with is about a 10 foot diameter tent which would leave me about 10 foot of space in front. I’ve got four sections of what used to be a ramp that was donated for my mother’s ramp but she passed recently in April. So these segments are pretty good they’re two that are 6 x 5‘ wide and then two that are probably about 5 x 5‘ wide so I figure tether the 6 foot and 10 foot together to give a 12 foot length for the back section and then I fix the two 5 x 5‘ ones in the front. I’d run pressure treated lumber the length of the shelter logic of 13‘ x 20‘ which would be affixed to the back of the two deck sections that will run along the back and then run the parameters with the pressure treated lumber the same way through the front and sides will have a gap of about a foot around but that won’t matter because they’ll all be tied together to the bottom four deck pieces as one unit. Otherwise eventually I could always gather more wood and fill in the rest of the floor around the parameters. For now, I figured the gap inside would allow for planting crops or using it as part of the tethering system and such. The front gap between The two back deck sections into the two front 10 x 10‘ deck sections would be a perfect place to put the two front poles too fix the untether the lines there. The other idea I have that I could do with the gap between the front two sections in the rear two sections would be to put two large deep planters and then secure the corner edges of the planters with the deck as well and filled out with soil and plants so that’s more weight inside helping to make it as one big solid unit anchoring down the tent and the carport. I was thinking in the center of the planters I can perhaps anchor in either a 2 inch or 3 inch EMT section or a piece of lumber pressure-treated just straight through the planter into the ground and then pack some rocks and then some earth for crops maybe screw some support sections 4 ways around, from the inside to the center to keep that pole in place and then screw some thing around that. I could strategically use those poles to also tether the tent. I’m figuring it’s gonna be need to be a center front one but I don’t wanna block entryway so I have to think that out but just to give you a picture. Then I would need to get really good tarp to replace the one that comes with The shelter logic. I was thinking a clear one. Inspired by what people are doing by surrounding their entire house with a greenhouse literally, creating a perfect climatized environment all year round, In very cold climates, intelligent and amazing, I thought I kinda do something like this maybe and see how this might work. If you haven’t seen them check them out they’ve got some really good videos with people expressing their life and showing you their home surrounded by an entire greenhouse. I’ve seen one large clear Heavy duty canopy tarp for sale that is 10 x 30‘ that is not unreasonable in price but it’s just a matter of knowing the thickest that I can pick up to make it more Affordable? I’ve heard six mil but I’m wondering if you have any thoughts on that? If I can get away where I can roll up the sides in the hot weather and then roll them down in the winter it would help insulate it but as well allowed to have a place to grow crops as well. Anything you can share on that I would really appreciate any feedback. I was thinking, because this will allow to have the little fireplace , which has a hole at the top or near the top , there you know. Then any tarp I get I would have to get something I could amend it with to allow safely for the pipe to go through I’m thinking. There would be about a 2 foot gap between the outside tip of the tent and the top under section of the tarp. Eventually I’d like to affix more EMT rods in the corners of the shelter logic carport to brace it more, as well as runners across the rooftop, diagonally and fix polycarbonate sheets, at least for the rooftop and figure on down as time goes on. Wondering if you’ve experienced The difference between the bell canvas tent and the four wall tent and what your suggestions are between either and preferences anything you can share to help me to make an educated decision on which one to invest in. I don’t have much but I thought I’d reach out because you guys really are doing great from what I can see there I really love what you did on that set up between the two tents If you haven’t made a video I’d love to see and learn what you did for creating that a doorway front wall there before going into the tent I think that is super cool. I’ve seen people do great things with this where they’ve been able to remove the tether strings from the front by putting in a front wall and door it’ll be great to see some of that how that’s done if there’s anything you can share or maybe put together a video. I looked everywhere on KZbin for a video on someone doing this with a shelter logic, using it as a canopy over their tent and I just have not been able to find any videos on it. It would be great to see and learn from anyone else who’s done that before. I however have seen people tether their shelter logic’s to make them more permanent by creating a runners of wood on either side of the legs and even some people using telephone poles as the base and then screwing it into that that’s fantastic. I don’t have that kind of strength or those types of resources at the moment but really cool ideas. My apologies for writing a book but I was inspired📝🥰. ☺️ Thank you and God’s blessings to all family near and far💕

Super neat ideas!! Please send pictures when you are all done? You should be able to purchase the rain fly separately. The only thing you have to be very careful about is where you want the hole for your stovepipe. When you talk to the company, you will want to give them exact measurements on where to put the hole and the size of your stovepipe. We have only ever worked with our wall tent so, unfortunately, we don’t have any info/comparison on the other. As far as the door goes, we don’t have a video 😞 We can see if we can come up with something for you 😄 Thank you for all of your questions and for sharing your ideas! Have a blessed day!

This isn’t a video of just the door but you can see (towards the end) the framework. The 4x4 above the door is the original front center pole that we cut to frame out the door. If you do cut a center pole for your door, you will want to make sure you frame it out fairly strong. You can see that we used 2 2x4s above the door. We could have used a 4x4 but we didn’t have one handy so 2 2x4s worked just fine. 😀
