Building a Wooden Sailboat #16: Steaming & Installing Rub Rails

In part sixteen of this series on how to build a wooden Snipe class sailboat I show how to finish the exterior of the boat, as well as install the rudder. Then I show how to mill the rub or spray rails from rough sawmill cherry. Next I pre-drill the rails and then steam them into shape. Finally I attach them with bedding compound and bronze screws.

Thanks! I like using the Yankee screwdriver on the slotted screws. Helps me keep an appropriate amount of force applied and has more control than the drill so I don't strip them out.

a tip if you ever think you gonna need to remove srew some years down the line: put the plugs in using varnish as a glue. it will hold just fine but its easier to remove the plug without messing up the hole

how did the pvc steam box work out for you? I'm in the rpocess of replacing the woodwork on my 14' rowboat. I have some pvc down spout and I was thinking of using it to steam my rails. just discovered you using pvc. my stuff is larger diameter.

The PVC worked just fine but you need to make sure it's supported. It gets very flexible and floppy when it is heated by the steam (just like the wood).

I bought a kit through SailRite.com. it includes everything you need to make a Main and Jib with exception of the grommet dies which I bought separate.
