Nice looking yurt, Dan, I built one a few years ago and I love it! I’m amazed at the viewers who haven’t researched the history of yurts and think they will blow over in the wind or snow. They were designed by the mongols of northern Asia where wind and snow are intense, they are sheep herders who live in the weather all year long. The design you show is in line with what they use. Here we have different materials (canvas, poly tarp,etc…) but the lattice work wall and the rafters with the ring are basically the same. I’ve used mine in the UP of Michigan in 45-50 mph winds with no problem. Easy to heat with the stove in the center! They’re more efficient than teepees!

What type of wood did you use for yours?

@@wmluna381 I used 2x10 Pine boards 10ft and ripped them with a table saw. A much better way is to use exterior grade plywood cut in 2”wide strips. For the fastener’s you’ll need about 300 post screws. The best way to get all the holes directly in line is to use a small laser and mark the holes along the beam. (They must be completely in line! Or they’ll bind up when you collapse the wall. It produces an extremely strong wall. Good luck.

@@wmluna381 I wish you the best of luck, it usually takes some finagling to get it right. Make sure to put plastic wrapped steel cable around the top of the wall to hold the load of the roof (cable clamps to make loops at the ends. I made the ring at the top out of about seven or eight layers of plywood (left over from making the wall slats), and glued them together with outdoor wood glue. If you’re going to have a wood stove, make the center hole of the ring 6” for a exhaust stack and the outside diameter 14” or so. Mine has lasted for years with the exhaust stack through it and still doesn’t show any damage. Camo poly tarp for the walls and roof.

You can make a trident for the center that will hold your roof ring in place so you can put your rafters in without them falling. If you make it with a pin to take the pole apart, it can be removed. I, personally, would leave the trident pole so I can use it for hanging hooks,running line for privacy walls, or even kitchen accessories for the stove. I love 🛖 yurts. They are an ingenious invention and hold up so well to strong winds compared to flat panel walls. Next best thing is an octagon.

I've built three nomadic yurts almost exactly the same as this, from scratch. 12' ,14', and 16'. To simplify ring and rafter install I make a 3/16ths coated cable the circumference of the yurt. Once the lath is attached to the door frame drop the cable into the 'x' at top of wall frame. This sizes the yurt wall exactly so the rafters fit into ring perfectly and the roof (ring rafters and wall) is properly tensioned. No screwing around. And yes a yurt is THE premier tent. I've had mine since 2013.

Well... I use a lot of tarps, and I can say that the thing I worry about is an edge catching wind... if there is no edge to catch, then the tarp does not get that force needed to send it flying. As wind from any direction hits that yurt, its going to press that tarp tight into that side. It works because that bottom is wrapped all the way down that angle and into the wall. It does get secured to the wall itself, that part that hangs down does not remain dangling.

I peeked at a 2017 vid of his using Yurt in search. He mentioned it was custom make by a pal or whatever. ~ Beginning of this vid he says they have abilities to sew about anything so a new top/sidewalls made with new material of choice I'd say. ~ The structure(frame,cap, door) looks the same custom job. ~~ tips me hat.

Lived in one for a summer. The only problem I had was that there was a skylight at the peak that didn't open, and when the sun shone on it (most of the day) it was like living in an oven. Otherwise, I loved it!! For long term camping, this is a great idea.

If you will, Can you give the specks on the yurt . Like size of the roof ring the roof rafter length & where the cute are . The height of the wall lattice door frame detentions. Please. I've seen you doing videos in this for years but like correct dimensions so I can go buy lumber and exactly build this so it'll work and go together correctly . Cool Beans!..but what a long load ay? blah blah...2009 I tried a new venture due to the missus had to give up downhill skiing/take it easier on the snowmobiles. Hey! maybe snowshoeing? So I dumped down the cash for the early Cabela's 12' X 12' Alaknak wall hot tent. And a dandy woodstove to go in it. ('billies to use 20" wood) ~~ fahhh, everything needed included my arse. ~ I had to buy/make up near half the guys to insure in heavy weather. Ho hum, so we tested it in the yard. Center polled was ok as where lighting was hung, but... Even with wood burning fairly well, come morning I was getting dripped on big time. The material sooked/wrong? ..guess so. ~ Testing was just after Thanksgiving (no snow), and left it up to make turkey soup in afternoon. (Dayum, that gal can make soup!) Fun day making soup on the woodstove/door pretty much open. ~~ Wada waste of cash tho. I never set it up again. The condensation was nuts.

I'd love a large yurt with actual "decking" underneath off the ground, a piece of land with solar, running water and off grid amenities to live in at least temporarily. Everything's so stupidly expensive anymore even that's a far fetched dream lol Being honest you could probably buy wooded land, a chain saw and build a comfortable yet old fashioned cabin, or even a "hobbit hole" from logs cheaper if you've got people to help on the fly.

Im a big proponent of trying what the indigenous individuals of your area used. I don't know what area of Michigan you're in but perhaps you should look into building a Potawatomi style wig-wam. kind of like a yurt but more suitable to the local environment.
