Building a gorgeous backyard fire pit doesn't necessarily have to be overly complicated or expensive. In this video we'll show you how we built an awesome gas-powered fire pit with landscaping stones, some hardware from Amazon and a few basic everyday tools.
We chose to build our fire pit right into the existing patio/deck. This is a much better design as it places the heavy loading directly on the ground instead of the deck.
The build starts with some layout where we plan the overall space to make sure we'll have enough room to move around the fire pit. Next, we plan the build and cut the stones to fit our design. We then remove a section of the existing deck, add some reinforcement and then place a few layers of compacted granular material. Stones are then stacked in a symmetrical (non-staggered) pattern. The propane gas flame trenches were connected to the gas lines and filled with decorative fire glass.
Tools used: hammer, tape measure, 6-foot level, drill/screwdriver, skill saw, table saw, mitre saw, hand tamper, wheelbarrow
Materials used: decorative concrete blocks, PL construction adhesive, 3/4" granular, pressure treated deck boards
Flame Trench (we used two of these): www.amazon.com/Grisun-Rectang...
Fire Glass (we used four bags): www.amazon.com/GASPRO-20-Poun...

Great video - looking to build one about 6 ft long for my new deck but will need to use lighter weight materials like cement board and wood for the sides - will probably go with concrete or granite for the top

Thanks guys. Was wondering how you cover the burners from the weather?

Hey Clark! You could but we don’t. I’ve had it outside for two years and everything is fine. The fire insert has holes to drain water. Good luck with yours!

Love it, inspiring. What type of stones are those? If a mold, where did you get? Thanks my good gents.

Glad you enjoyed it. Those are just standard retaining wall stones from the building store. Good luck making your own! Just make sure what ever you build matches your fire pit insert

Nice fire pit Dudes! Do you need to use special blocks/pavers for being around the fire or was that necessary for your particular application? Heat proof? I want to do something similar in my backyard and want to build with concrete paver blocks from local suppliers like Home Depot or Lowes if they have the blocks. Thanks and keep building!

Hey Todd thanks for watching. No we did not use any sort of special blocks. The reason being is that most of the heat stays in the fire tray. The blocks get hot but not to the point where they risk exploding. If built other wood burning fire pits with regular concrete pavers and they’re usually ok. But you need to watch out for certain natural stones like slate Good luck!

Where the shut off valve on side of pit?
@DIYDudes

The shut off is connected to the propane tank. It’s concealed by the deck. Thanks for watching!

Butting up the boards without a gap doesn’t make sense. Wood swells as it gets wet as well as shrinks. Better to leave a 1/8th inch gap.

I see your point but it was just a little trim piece. It’s been there for a couple years now and it’s been fine, thanks for watching!
