In reference to Ted's air travel metaphor: It's more like if the luggage factory moved a mobile factory onto the tarmac and had your luggage together and on the plane as the aircraft-tug began the push-back, with the clothes inside still hot from the iron. Exactly - it lets you use almost the entire volume, rather than needing walking space between every shelve unit. A different strategy is to use very tall shelves on tracks that "orbit", somewhat like a tank tread so you can use vertical room more efficiently.
