If I had a pond that big, I would want an island. I would build a small log cabin on it to house whatever equipment needed to maintain it. A tiny dock would add to the effect that the island looked farther away than it really was.

Like Jeff I insisted on an island on the pond I had built over 30 years ago. It seems I was always needing to load the mower in the boat and mow it. Work got me really busy for several years, and now the island is a brushy, snake infested eyesore. The pond is in Louisiana, but if Chris were closer I would have him come delete it. A peninsula that the tractor could get on would have been much smarter. But a person sometimes has to learn the hard way. I know I did.
@justinfufun54832 жыл бұрын
A nice bridge would add to the island. Get a couple or 4 of old riveted I beams. Something that will carry a mower, heavy enough to just sit there and provide shade, look interesting and has a story behind it. Maybe.
@larrylindsey14972 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY. Island sounds good on paper. What a pain in the ass. Build a bridge or road to the island and get 10X more use.
@mr.shannon61372 жыл бұрын
Kill the critters and put a goat on it. Problem solved. Build an aesthetically pleasing bridge to the island so the goat can come and go whenever it wants. Go with zero-scaping. Landscaping without vegetation. They do that a lot in drought prone areas to reduce water consumption.

Mr. Bealy is going to have to build a pontoon boat to keep that Island mowed and spiffy. There's lots of videos on KZbin how to build them using blue plastic barrels, pvc pipes, plywood and other items. With a small trolling motor for propultion. Also to get some amenities like chairs, bbq grill, table and other items. I'd suggest an A frame poles to swingr off into the water or a water slide. Or both. Anyways, Chris is doing an outstanding job shaping up that former Forrest into a pond. I wonder what the Bealy's will name it.

Perhaps if they were to plant a couple oak trees on the island, far enough apart to hang a hammock at a comfortable height. Seed it with clover for a nice green surface that does not need mowing. If i had a pond with an island it would have been big enough to build a small shack on the island and a jetty or bridge going out to the island, but im sure most folks do not have that much room and just want an island for birds to use as an escape from predators, and to make nests, looking realy good , thanks for sharing.

Pond in looking great, but with all due respect, the island looks more like a pimple in the pond instead of an island. @davidprocter35782 жыл бұрын
Problem with earth islands in big ponds is that they are prone to erosion planting willow iris reeds or rush will protect the shore line. Iris would be the least problematical , tends not to grow in water more than 12 inches deep and is not as tall as reed and rush which will grow in much deeper water and are very much taller willow planted every seven feet will bind the island together planted every two feet would provide you with a live timber fortress in twenty years which might be of some benefit in future if life gets any rougher. depends what you want to use the island for. The soils you have been digging through are all alluvial deposits most likely from one of the past ice ages the areas of deep topsoil would have been ponds or marsh that have silted up over the years and dried out which explains the lack of stones. by the way this is to both you and Bealy.

Seen others do a trick with a mud flap ! You attach a flap just above the main pin of stick. Use bolts w/flat plate for ease of replacement. Make flap (custom cut ears to cover and clear where needed) as wide as possible and long as needed to cover the quick release attachment. This will keep dirt from falling out of bucket when curling, back into pins & swivel joints etc.. will not interfere with thumb!
