Nice using old hardware for new things! I bought an old HP Gen8 Server from ebay, £100, put the most powerfull Xeon i could in it, direct from Aliexpress, got 32Gb of ECC Ram, jobs a good one. Haven't looked back. Running a few apps from Truenas Charts catalog on the server, Emby with GPU passthrough, torrent software, pihole, quacamole for remote access and one for the kids, Minecraft! All pretty easy to set up! Server doesnt break a sweat! Much more fun than buying a NAS! Keep up the great content 🙂

I use a Inter-Tech 4004 case. That is a 4 bay miniITX case so it is very small. Additionaly I use a miniITX Mainboard with an AMD B450 chipset and as a CPU a Ryzen 3 2200G. A 256 GB M.2 NVMe SSD is the boot drive. 16 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM and a low profile Noctua cooler together with a 250W power supply do the job nicely. Two of the drive bays are populated with 6 TB seagate desktop drives I pulled out of external cases to save money. They run in mirror in my case for close to a year 24/7 now. I don't use TrueNAS thow, there ist Debian Bullseye installed on the SSD, together with OpenMediaVault, pi-hole as a network wide DNS ad filter and miniDNLA. The system has last been setup in October 2022, so it is very reliable and totally fits my needs. Since the server ist so small it fits nearly everywhere. It has a 2.5 GBit LAN card added into the only PCIe slot. I'm very satisfied with it so far. The server is backed up to several external harddisks from time to time of course. As you know: RAID does not replace backups.

i have just got 2 of the Same Drives but the 16TB for £225 each from Amazon absolute Bargain i payed £180 for a single 8TB iron wolf Drive last year i wish i had waited as i bought 4 of them for my Synology DS920 NAS
