Building by my POND, the next phase. And much more MUD! #8

Welcome back to The Last Homely Garden! I've been working with Ant again and my gardening friends Adam and Arran. Ant got some help from Ali, so all my helpers names being with A. What are the chances!
I left you last time with a Ant making a little sitting area beside the pond. Ant and I always knew there was going to be a CABIN! Here is the start of that structure, with so much rain holding things up and making the area down by the pond into a mud bath!
Watch to see what solutions we come upon with.
And you know don't you, that when I say 'we' I mean all of them? I just get in the way and have crazy ideas.

Love it Kate, and so glad you have your “powder room” add on, that will be so useful, you can then really make use of the cabin. You seem to have the best workmen, so amenable and open to ideas instead of what they want rather than what you want, which is the sort of workmen I always seem to get lol.

I am re-watching this and realize Ant has a sort of flying goose detail on his hat, I think you guys should design a hat motif from the wooden patchwork on the wall of the cabin, print up a batch of caps, and sell them in the shop! Many of us might wear them and certainly buy for our men!

I got some reusable fly trap jars and put a chicken liver and water in it. Fill about halfway with water. hang somewhere away from sitting area or smell will be strong. But it works. Traps them by the ton.

this could NEVER be done at Lake Tahoe (we are on northern end of lake, California side) with out multiple local (TRPA), county (Placer ), Fish & Game (Federal), written approval by neighbors & considerable $$$$$$., really .... $$$$ just for permitting. If caught w/o permits, oh Boy! Remove all at your expense, Fined heavily, all subsequent building or permitting "red flagged". You & Anth are so fortunate!!!! Brilliant work, joy to follow, can't wait for "bird viewing from new shed". congratulations (you do not live in Lake Tahoe)

I wish you'd get a few more geese to keep Eileen company - geese are flock animals, and do get lonely for their own kind. You've got plenty of room for them in the pond - aren't you tempted to get just a couple more geese? You'd get lots more lovely goose eggs, too!

You absolutely MUST have a wood burning stove in your little cabin ! Not only to keep it as cosy as toast but you can put a kettle on it. Also, you need a big picture window in front for the view. Imagine spending afternoons or even evenings watching the wildlife whilst knitting or hand stitching. 🤩🤩🤩

Hello, Kate! I built a 10’x10’ ( I’d need a building permit to build a larger one) potting shed a few years ago. I built it from the ground up by myself, with the exception of a couple of days when a friend came over to: 1) hold one end of the trusses while I fastened them, and 2) to hold the ladder while I put the upper rows and ridge cap of shingles. She’s not Ant, but she is willing and able to follow my direction! 😊 I used salvaged windows from our local Habitat for Humanity Restore and doors from a yard sale-$2 each and I made one into a Dutch door. I also upcycled a couple of bedsteads and a dining table-also from the Restore-#into lower cabinets and shelves. I just need to finish my potting counter where I’ll install an old IKEA sink with integrated drain board that I bought at a yard sale. Having watched this video, I’m itching to get back out there. However, it’s the second week of December, we have 6” of snow, and it’s currently raining. My shed will be cold and damp, and certainly not favourable working conditions for this 70-yr-old woman! I’m just going to sit back with a cup of tea by my fire and watch catch up with the next episode in your cabin adventure. Thank you, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦

January 24 2024 Maryland USA: Oh that is so smart to make the walk way. Ant is such a pro and to understand all the possibilities. To distribute the concrete and those posts is so brilliant and in time had this not been part of the foundation you can only imagine as the weather continues over the years there would be trouble. You have lovely friends and your family that are so encouraging with your ideas. Oh if I were there I would visit while it goes up and maybe share a small meal wiith tea for the hardy workers.

It is so enjoyable watching the progress of your pond and its whole area. Eileen looks like she is in heaven having a closer place to swim and you will so enjoy just sitting there and watching her. I so understand your need for the nearby potty. Having to trek up to the house each time would take away some of your pleasure of being out at the pond, plus the kids will love it too. What an amazing idea! A beautiful cabin by the pond. That’s going to be absolutely glorious to sit inside once it’s complete. Thank you for bringing us along for this process! Have you thought about having a small heater inside for the colder months/mornings? There are quite a few small wood burning stoves that would heat a space like that easily. Not sure if that’s something you want to have to fuss with though.

I was thinking of that - but despite providing shelters over the years, Eileen has never used them. Even to the point of lying in the snow next to the open door of a straw lined shed. But I think I'll talk to him about something like you suggest. Gotta keep trying! xxx
