Want to build strong cabinet drawers that don't involve time consuming dovetails? John Olson of WOOD magazine shows you how the Festool Domino system works. It's like a biscuit joiner, but only better - and stronger! Before you build your cabinet drawer boxes, check out if this is the right tool and technique for you. This breakout feature comes from WOOD magazine's Weekend With WOOD 2015 class.

I glue and clamp the drawer up (before cutting in domino's)usually 30 min is enough time then go back and cut in the domino's into both pieces at the same time. This provides tighter fitting dominos with no slop and no layout error.

He's not using it to its full potential, apart from using far too many dominos, you don't need to waste your time with pencil marks. The domino has stops so that you can eliminate human error. I never ever mark a single joint and its spot on every time, probably more accurate than if i did mark it out in the first place. The domino is a clever system that eliminates time wasting and enables better productivity. He needs to read the manual... or watch a demo video on it haha

@@SwapnilBhartiya when you have the ability to use 1/4 or 1/2 dowels drilled side by side it can actually be very strong , no doubt festool is precise but dowels can do very sturdy joints as well with precision, with 1/6 of the cost , again depends the field and environment is used

Is there an issue with the fact that the domino in one of the mortises is mating to end grain. I’m sure its fine for a drawer of this size, but for a joint on a table or chair, wouldn’t using the domino be a weak joint this way?

Theres a few things that weren't addressed. -Need to cover material depth height. -Dont adjust tenon play settings unless machine is on. While this is a great tool, the biggest issue is that you can make many mistakes rapidly. Speaking from experience lol

Agreed! That seems super excessive. I have a Domino and am just getting started with using it. But I don't think that anyone would need that many Dominos on a drawer!

What’s this love with the Dominos? Pocket holes (plus glue) and dowels are perfectly strong. If your wood fails before your joint, you can’t even make repairs (homeowner point of view when stuff actually gets broken). If anything you want the joint to be just slightly weaker than the wood. Pocket hole may still strip out, but still at the joints. Maybe dowels are the best since most tests show they fail before the wood around them. I am just talking from a lay person point of view. I have no issues with Festool, it’s just good for makers, and nearly irrelevant to the user.
@MintStiles
@MintStiles 5 жыл бұрын
No. It’s better to design your joints for appropriate to application than to prove that your joint is stronger than the wood around it. Would you make an engine that last 10000 working hours but design a frame that will last 3000? Arrogance killed modern woodworking.

Very good point. Sadly the 1001 ways you can use a Domino as opposed to a pocket hole leaves that argument redundant. If you are a commercial user or a keen hobbyist who has limited time there is no substitute for the Domino. Had the same machine in my Workshop for over 15years have put in 10's of thousands of Dominos and it still works as well today as it ever did. Cost recouped in one job in time saving.

I really do feel that technology is starting to blind some people. I do value the 'domino' concept, and in the correct application, it is a winner! However, with a simple jig and table saw one can make an equally strong box joint, probably quicker, safer and most definitely cheaper. Also, personally, if done carefully and correctly box joints leave an appealing finish....this video is similar to using dynamite to open a can of sardines.
@Justin-C
@Justin-C 2 жыл бұрын
A dado blade on a table saw is hardly safer than a Domino, lol.. and with a simple box joint jig, you're absolutely not doing a full box or drawer quicker than a Domino would.
