This session was part of SXSW’s Partner Programming at SXSW 2024 and is presented by Alpha School.
Artificial Intelligence will lead to increased human intelligence. It's provocative and not the view we hear most when it comes to AI's impact on humanity. Founder MacKenzie Price has nearly a decade of data and can pinpoint where the future of learning is heading, how generative AI will be the most disruptive + transformational force on learning in centuries. The revolution is here and generative AI will render all educational materials to date -obsolete and archaic - resoundingly impacting how we learn absolutely everything - as students, as employees, as founders and citizens of the world.

AI seems to be doing an amazing job at tutoring students at high school. However, what happens when they reach college and their is no AI tutor to interact and help them do they then become unmotivated? She didn't really seem to answer a similar question posed from the audience. Can someone provide me with a clearer answer?

I would think that with spending the majority of their time learning life skills that by the time they are in college, they will know who they are, what interests them, and how to navigate without help.

also, what about the communal and social aspects of school. School is probably the only chance for kids to get in touch and deal with the wider community and people with wide range of personalities, abilities, interests and social-economic backgrounds, right now. In the world of AI, making sure that human and community needs are prioritized and valued becomes more lmportant. Just focusing on individual peak performances will inevitably lead to the irrelevance and disposability of almost all humans.

All the knowledge of the world is online for free. Companies want people who can do things rather than have a piece of paper. The health industry may be the only exception.

In my 20 years in the labor force, the only job that required more than 2 hours of sustained effort was folding advertisements into newspapers when I was a 15-year-old paper boy. Every professional job I've had since then has been much more diverse and provided opportunities to not stare at one thing for 6 hours straight.

It makes no sense to me that 20 years ago consolidation occurred rather than taking education to the pupils more close nit smaller gatherings. But we pretended for 70+ years that we put time ,color all these great human qualities back into nature under grand unified old world models. The things selfless actors like newton allowed nature to speak that emphasized human qualities was self sacrificed and sold our soul agency free will inertia frame of reference. A real curriculum issue that structurally aligned with recruitment for agency and institutions rather enriching young minds to better navigate the world they will live in .

Some thoughts about the label "hysterical women" that someone in the comments uses: Okay if a man or woman's voice is difficult to listen to for some. Not exactly my experience of this video though, also the voices and communication style of these two women individually are very different, so I don't lump them together either in my experience. But then to add the generalizing derogatory and stigmatizing "hysterical" label, which also has been arrogantly coupled with the female gender, is a prejudice, a thinking / attribution error. And some use it purposely, instrumentally as a put down, to dehumanize, denigrate, ridicule, and lower women's status and enhance their own. It only reinforces existing very damaging stigma about 'women', and this works insidiously: next time women talk enthousiastically about their expertise (especially) and passion, which men do as well without getting labeled 'hysterical men', the latent, lingering reinforced prejudice will raise its head and people get distracted and don't listen anymore to what a woman says, or take it less seriously. This creates marginalization. Same goes for generalizing stigmatizing dehumanizing oppressing labels like 'Karen' or 'RBF' (because people can label girls/women with these when they just are occupied, pensive, or simply irritated about something, as normal human behaviors), labels which until recently I didn't even know existed. Reading about them shocked me, more tools added to narrow down girls/women's action space. They work like invisible shackles, used repetitively and over time get settled in people's minds, become a social unwritten rule (i.e. 'avoid these labels'). The same stigmatization, disempowerment, marginalization and attribution error mechanism happens with bullying dynamics. The main motive behind bullying is a need to dominate, a need for power and control by an instigator. Of course there also are rigid faulty ideas about what men are supposed to be. I just hope that people will remain mindful of various prejudices that accumulate over the years, that are damaging. Also in general, individual freedom is going backwards, instead of progress. These are some of the reasons I'm very hopeful and extremely excited about the AI revolution when it will benefit everyone, as a completely new chapter for humanity, a paradigm change and leap forward.

Intelligence is assessed by the state of consciousness and when we believe in all kinds of sectarian irrationalities such as economics, religion and nationalism, we are far from reasoning and collective madness is no less crazy in group than individually. ;)

Every kid can be in the 90th percentile or above? Sounds like she needs to go back to school herself and learn how percentiles work....
@Franklyfun935
@Franklyfun935 3 ай бұрын
If we interpret the statement at issue to mean every student at Alpha and at similar schools can reach or exceed the 90th percentile nationally, then the statement indeed makes sense. Percentiles are relative to a specific population, so if the comparison group is defined appropriately, it's possible for all students in a particular school to be in the 90th percentile or above compared to a broader or different group. The statement could be clearer, but with the principle of charity in mind-assuming the best, most reasonable interpretation-we can find a sensible meaning. Respectfully, it sounds as though you may need to go back to school to take a class on critical thinking.

she means the CURRENT percentile, even though it is a subjective measure that depends on all the people you're evaluating, the current 90th percentile is still an absolute, think about it in IQ, IQ is not sufficient nor reliable to evaluate but i am using it as an example to make it easier to understand, current 90th percentile equals 115 IQ (im making numbers up), then she is saying that every kid can be above 115 IQ, its something like that what shes saying, she means we can make all kids learn better than the best we have today, and she is right (And please, dont misinterpret my IQ analogy, it was just an example, its not a reliable measure of intelligence nor education or wisdom or understanding, its an outdated and defective estimation)

Yep, I must agree that it is pure propaganda. AI most definitely has a significant place in education now and in the future. But if you really want to talk about meeting students where they are and strength based learning, you need professionals who understand how humans develop, not just acquire academic knowledge. UDL, Three-Block model, PBL are only a few of the frameworks educators could use to deliver what she implies that only her school can.
