Sawtooth Guitars has is doing the same thing that many of you do. Take a basic affordable guitar and then mod it create an affordable high level instrument. They are doing this with their Americana series guitars AND their new Road Warrior bass series. It's a simple, straight forward design, but with upgraded hardware and components (checkout the aluminum pickguard!). If you tried to do these same mods yourself, it would cost you more in the end.

Max, California has many guitar makers, and your the West Coast Guru for new and affordable gear! #1 Buy a super cheap guitar to learn how to do guitar maintenance and setups. #2 Build a DIY guitar or Bass kit to have a hands on construction experience. These things have made me a more focused purchaser, and increased my appreciation of music. Thanks for all your hot licks, and savvy info! 🎸🛩👍👍

This is actually a really cool concept! Love that Sawtooth is doing something different. Would love to see other brands upgrade their own instruments - it’s a cool idea! Way to do this, Sawtooth!

I get my guitars from a builder in China who makes only the neck and body. Then I do all the work, glue, paint, finish, parts, hardware and assembly, and set up. I built five solid guitars this way. I've also upgraded my Peavey with better parts, Gotoh Floyd Rose and Tone Rider Pickups. Lastly I have a couple Warmoth Builds.

Had an 1980 Squire Japan Precission bass! No Fender bass ever reached this quality! A reference bass for a long time in my studio! This was the best Fender clone ever! Sold it in 2020 for about 1000€ 🤟😎

Max, you are awesome. Be careful you don't put yourself out of business, bro, you turned me on to so much cool gear in the last three years (read: pandemic) I don't think I'll ever buy another guitar...maybe not even another set of strings. Among other things, I bought a Glarry P-bass. Everyone should get one. ($75) and fiddle with it. My planned mods: Glary and HB T-Types; pickup upgrades; Danelectro U2 56/96, tuner upgrade; repair input jacks on TE-70 HB, and'85 Cali Fat Strat.

IYV makes beautiful instruments but they leave out a lot of the human labor to keep the prices low. Their hardware and electronics aren't bad, but I put locking tuners on mine. The Wilkinson bridge is better than the one on my 40'th anniversary Squire, IMO. I had planned on getting some DiMarzio pickups, but I don't think it is necessary anymore. I plan on getting the archtop jazz guitar next. They even have a PRS knockoff I am considering.

All of my collection is inexpensive guitars that I have upgraded and setup to make a huge difference in their sound. I use Dylan Talks Tone pickups and a variety of really nice hardware. I love them all.

This is true... buy a warmoth body and neck unpainted... expect 600 ... painted 800... nice wood? 1k? ... my new SanDimas Charvelle with a quilted blueburst came in at around 1200 ... with real Seymour Duncans, coil split wiring, one piece multi radius neck, FR1000, stainless frets... the real cost??? 500 for our local pro, Mike Lulls Guitarworks... Brian Beller is a endorser... for Plek and setup, in addition to installing the shims the FR1000 needed for the 16" radius at the 22nd fret... You want low action, with ZERO fret out, and fluid playability??? yea.. its all that. Hecho de Mexico ❤

I'm down with both of your unrelated thoughts here, Timothy, but I didn't quite follow the connection. I'm not a bass player either. I also like sea foam green. These things have nothing to do with each other.

Buy a kit. Or used guitar then look for parts. All over. You can get discounts. Or find newer parts online. Build it to your liking. Good video as usual buddy 😎👍👋💯🎸🎸. Example. I seen some Fender locking tuners that are like new for $35. Good deal

I got a heavily modded Firefly LP, love it, i swapped Floyds on my Fusion3 with an OFR from like 15 years ago ( i know i know Floyd 1000 is the same as ofr), also pickups, maybe one day ill be able to buy a 10k guitar but until then 200 bucks and a few mods haha

Firefly's are what I used to learn how to do mods, fret work, finish touchups, and of couse, basic tech work. I probably modded and hot rodded over 30 of their LP's. From top to bottom perfection, far superior pickups and electronics, locking tuners, GraphTech nuts, sometimes GraphTech Saddles and at the very least a VERY good quality, heavily padded gig bag. Only charged at the max. $350+ shipping. Learned a lot from those. Still have a couple too. Great guitars!

I actually wonder if there's a market for (or even a company that does) semi-custom guitars. In other words, they have a bunch of bodies and necks, and a wide variety of hardware, then you just pick the body style, the color, the hardware, and they assemble it for you and ship it out. Obviously more expensive than a factory build, but it's got to be less than a full custom.

I can go to iyv guitars , harley benton guitars , eart guitars , xazier guitars, and i'm sure any budget pre-made guitars and upgrade all of those different guitars for under $500 dollars easily. Why do you keep recommending these other guitars that are more expensive instead of cost-effective?

The other name for the tree commonly referred to as 'basswood' is 'American linden,' which sounds so much more expensive than 'basswood' that I wonder why guitar manufacturers don't use it.
