Couple of quick notes: ❶ You can scrap weapons and armor through their respective workbenches without increasing the settlement size limit. This option isn't available in the regular workbench, which is why I forgot to mention it. ❷ If you see some colored flashes during the tips, those were supposed to be cool title cards that I built in After Effects. They didn't render properly in Premiere Pro for some reason and I didn't notice until the video had already been posted. Oh well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Skooled Zone Also,mid-game,when you have decent money(for me anyway)Id buy all Moe's bats,especially bats that are upgraded,so you get wood,& other components, & the benches are right there to break them down.Also,when "shopping",especially in survival with no fast travel....Bring a companion. Who likes shopping alone anyway😉 Just my thoughts. And,did i mention,you'd make a great teacher🤔......Just say'n....Just say'n...... Take care, & good stuff as always

I don't know about all platforms but on PC the auto scrapping when you want to craft, you don't always get all of those materials. Sometimes the excess is lost forever. Example would be if an item as 4 cloth and 1 asbestos and all you need is the asbestos as a material sometimes you get the cloth in the workshop sometimes when checking after the cloth just wasn't added after the use. Where as if you broke it down yourself the work shop will increase 1asbestos and your cloth would increase by 4 aswell. and then craft so you retain the 4 extra cloth. Late game probably no one cares, early on tho you may want to be that a.nal and make sure to break the stuff down beforehand.

(1) All settlers are immortal to anything except your friendly fire. They better their weapons, the more damage they do. The better their armor, the longer it is before they "sit down." They don't use ammo, so only put one round in their inventory. Their aim is terrible. Full autos, miniguns and gatling lasers, and flame/plasma throwers work best. (2) For supply chains, you only need one connection to each settlement to connect them all. I normally hub them out of settlements that you cannot build up well. If you can wait until you finish the Mechanist Lair, you can connect every settlement you have from robots created in that one. This also prevents you from getting a Minuteman Quest that links to a settler you have moving around the map that you have to chase down. (3) Specific junk helps Adhesive - Get your glue factory going. Tato, Mutfruit, Corn, and the extra purified water you get from overbuilding water at your settlements. This becomes a great way to have more adhesive than you will ever use and generate XP. Antiseptic - sold by most doctors, this one is worth buying (along with blood bags and regular raids on the blood bank for blood bags). Crafting Stimpaks is much cheaper than buying them. Ballistic Fiber - Military Ammo Bags are commonly created by scavengers at scavenger stations. Worth buying for Lucas/KLEO to get your undergarments up to LV5. You won't need much, unless you are aiming for super-settlers. That said, your companions will be much more useful in some LV5 Army Fatigues/Baseball Uniform and a LV5 hat. Tons of protection and the ST boost from the garments increases their carry weight slightly. This is particularly true in Survival where keeping them up is more important. Circuitry - Hot Plates, Telephones, and the cards you often find on robots and in turrets. Playing through Automatron will likely add a lot. This is one worth having tagged if you have the perk that highlights them. Cloth - scrap piles of clothing, rags, hats, etc Concrete - After one of the expansions, almost every merchant carries shipments and it is one of the cheapest things to buy that way. Build more using concrete if you want your caps to go as far as possible. Crystal and Fiber Optics - go through the Jamaica Planes Treasure's laser grid disarming every one. Then reset them and do it again. You also get steel, but a few times through and you will be golden for your laser turrets forever. Save often. Fertilizer - you can get up to 3 fertilizer per settlement per day with 3 brahmin. Put down the tubs to keep them from wandering off and you can use cages to get them quick (better than buying them from the wandering girl). You can also put them as settlements with no settlers (normally they only show up if you have a beacon going). Glass - raid the brewery over and over to stack up glass fast. I've only ever ran out when building big greenhouses, however. In survival you will have less glass due to using bottles to create dirty water with (dirty is better than pure, because pure is free from overproduction and dirty has more crafting uses). Lead - Look for the boxing gyms. There is one in the robco galleria and another near Pickmans/The Old North Church. The Atom Cats also have a lot of weights sitting around. If you get the imrpoved scrapping perk, you will drown in lead scraping lead armor (one of the most common mods for armor to carry). Leather - scrap piles of leather armor, raider leathers, road leathers, etc. Nuclear material - Vault 88. Oil - Keep an eye out for bones as well as objects with oil, since crafting cutting fluid is the short way to plenty of oil and some XP as well. Rubber - you can carry loose tires into settlements and scrap them if you need just a little bit more. Steel and Wood - Scrap more in settlements. You will never get more wood at a lower price. Keep your settlements connected and the low wood ones will borrow from the high wood. Scraping usually gets you plenty of steel. Pipe weapons get you steel and double barreled shotguns, hunting rifles, and several melee weapons give you wood. There are usually low value weapons, so scrapping them at weapon benches in dungeons can help you get the value out without the weight.

I’m surprised no one mentioned aluminum.
@oaksparoakspar3144
@oaksparoakspar3144 3 жыл бұрын
@@Johnnyy832 My bad. Aluminum is certainly worth tagging if you are playing a power armor character - since it is regularly consumed in repairing the better kinds. Mishra Fishpacking is the best place to raid for that. The processing line is covered in trays that provide it. Also, just get used to looking for the shiny tin cans and pick up every tray you see (not all will be aluminum) and you will find plenty. I also didn't mention copper, but apart from one game where I was playing with the ammo factory for a copper using caliber, I have never run out as a side effect. It is in many electronics as a byproduct of more useful things. Lightbulbs and lamps are good sources, but lamps get heavy fast. Gold and silver are basically worthless for crafting - you will need them only a little if you are playing with costly energy weapons. If you are running out it is because you are equipping entire settlements with them. Opening safes is usually the best route to find those materials - especially gold in the bank behind Backstreet apparel once you have LV3 for the Hack/Pick perks. Cork is something that you might find valuable in the early game when lightening up your armor (going for the lighter armor ability is usually better than deep pockets because you still gain capacity by removing pounds and you get extra AP if you ever sprint or use VATS. Obviously, you can but a ton from Moe in shipments or in baseballs. Otherwise, just keep an eye out for piles of balls. The gym in the Mayoral shelter and the field next to the raider filled police station near Bunker Hill both have several.

A maxed level Scrapper is a settlement builders dream tool. From one automatic assault rifle you can nearly equal a shipment of screws and aluminum. Rank 4 of Strong Back is also amazing as you can fast travel while over encumbered. That means a fully looted Gunners Plaza can completely overhaul a settlement.

Settlement Supply lines: Since Automatron, I stopped using settlers and have been using bots with the mechanists lair as the hub to every settlement including Far Harbour. My Mech lair is always busy and full of Brahmin. Yeah, you can take that anyway you like and I fully imagine it would smell it. End result is that I have mechanized army roaming Boston so perhaps I should stop wearing Silver Shroud Garb and start wearing the Mechanist Garb as I realized her dream in toto. To make it a bit more organic and stop the Burgeoning Bot and Brahmin Bottlenecks Billowing out to the Boston Basin, invariably I envisioned visiting vault-tec as the vaunted vehicle to facilitate brisker bovine velocity. Verily, it.... sucked cow bells. Awesome Video skooled Zone!

Just thought I'd add something about the Charisma boost. Clothing and other stat boosting stuff does nothing past 10. I've gone in with 10 natural Charisma, remembered to then change clothes, gaining several more points, and noticed the prices are exactly the same as at 10. Only thr Cap Collector perk and Grape Mentats can help after that. The boosted Charisma from GM doesn't help, but it still makes the prices 10% better.

Hey, love the channel it's getting me back into FO4! One huge thing I noticed in the video is you recommend putting junk to scrap into settlement storage. This is not ideal if you want to get all the components from items. If you put any item that has multiple component pieces of scrap into settlement then it gets broken down while building something, instead of the other components being added to storage they just disappear. To make sure you get all the components you have to drop inside the settlement build area then manually scrap in build mode. Hope this helps, no telling how much I lost not knowing that over the years.

Hello I know this game and videos are old but, I use the same method as you when I settlement build. Though I scrap all junk to maximize the materials for example a telephone has multiple materials and if you say build a metal wall it may use the telephone metal and waste the others. Another difference I use is that I sell all weapons and armor I don’t need in order to buy the shipments and all the junk a vendor may have. You warned on scraping rare items which unfortunately I have done by mistake.

Tired of companions and settlers picking up weapons/armor? Download "Amazing Follower Tweaks FO4 Edition". It has an option to turn off "Allow autonomous Item Pickup". There are so many features, but it also has things like dejunk- one touch button for a companion to take all junk/scrap out of your inventory. Dedupe does the same, but with duplicate armor, clothing and weapons (i.e. anything in inventory with 2 or more).

I got this down. Junk goes in the workshop in the beginning and weapons and armor get sold Once I get the scrapper perk almost everything gets scrapped .. LOL Even the junk jet got scrapped. I always scrap at one settlement because I never do a real build there .. Actually I never build there and it has the perfect floor at the airport . All it has is a good place to scrap shit and because I never build there I have no issues with size . once Im like level 70 and all my water settlements have multiple water purification plants then I have multiple reliable sources of caps to spend at my leisure .. Also by this time I only buy long range and up close ammo so ammo is rarely bought

I'm quite late, but the settlement size glitch will only occur when scrapping/storing items in workshop mode. This is because weapons and armor aren't features of the settlement while they're in your inventory.

No, it doesn't affect your settlement's build limit one way or the other if you use a weapons/armour workbench to scrap items directly from your inventory. It only affects the build limit if you use the settlement workshop to scrap them after dropping them on the floor.

@radarrider7469

I watched this a day or two after you posted it but didn't have a chance to post a comment. I wanted to mention that even though I have a lot of caps I still scrounge everything and then scrap the most useful stuff and sell the rest. I also make a habit of selling ammo quite often too. At time I've had 13,000 or more rounds of more than one caliber. These being the ones that go with the weapons I don't like to use. My favorites being the assault rifle, the shotgun and the combat rifle. So in addition to this, the 308 shells are worth 2 caps. Although these are not that common to find so I sell them only occasionally. After obtaining the DLC's, I build almost exclusively with cement. These building are the nicest looking of anything available. So with this I have to purchase shipments of cement quite often. I mean what is the point of the settlers hammering away on the building all of the time if the building never improve? I also like using the glass walls and roof sections that you find in the warehouse group. They are a little more difficult to run power in since you have to run it low on the wall but it looks so much nicer and it's very bright inside during the daytime. I like to place my stores in these buildings. Another thing I've figured out is if you use some of the new rugs, some are very light in color and you can use them to cover the floor in your existing buildings and it will make the interior much brighter. With at least one scavenger stand in each settlement you will then have a good source of junk items in each workshop. If you build an ammo factory you will then have a very good source of lead, fertilizer, plastic and any of the other items required to manufacture your favorite ammo.

I keep thinking I'll put out a list of the best things to buy as far as cost vs scrapped component value. Here are a few of the ones I like to buy because they are cheap, but yield valuable resources: Hot plates, military ammo bags, telephones, typewriters, teapots, alarm clocks, various aluminum trays, cake pans, fans, globes, cooking oil, oil cans, brahmin skulls, paint, baseball gloves, coffee cups, ashtrays, vases, pencils... They are often heavy, so you don't always tote them back from a mission, but if you have settlement vendors or if Carla comes to town, they are a gold mine of cheap crafting/building materials - SOOOOO much cheaper than shipments, which is great for early stages before you have a lot of money, and will get you the components you need to make turrets, power and light your settlement, modify weapons and armor, etc.

Here's a tip for increasing settlement size and breaking down junk; instead of putting junk items into the workshop and letting them break down as you build, drop them all out of your inventory and scrap them in the workshop menu; I've gotten in the habit of doing that, and apart from having a clearer view of what components I have, it also decreases the settlement size a little bit every time. It's a way of saving two birds with one stone if you're going to be using the settlement size glitch anyway, so I hope this can help someone who comes across this comment.

@ward9 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Skooled Zone for this tip. I've got another solution that I'd like to share with the class! Some consider the Creation Club part of this game a "mod" but I consider it DLC content since it can be purchased from the developer and it's over all, WAY more stable and polished then a "mod." Sometimes they can be expensive like $10 or more so I'd wait for them to have a sale and then buy yourself the Settlement Ambush Kit from the Creation Club. Tip: In Vault 88 leave the things called "Barricades" over the doors in Vault 88 when you are clearing the place out. This will make it so no enemies will ever spawn at any other location except from the front door of the vault. Set up a Distress beacon that will make raids of mobs spawn and try to take over your settlement in waves. The waves of enemies get progressively more and more difficult and will eventually drop very expensive loot and several legendary items. You can then sell the loot you collect to vendors and trade it in for all the supplies you could ever want or need. Warning: Even on Very Easy difficulty these enemies on the Teir 6 level can absolutely steam roll your character if you are not well geared. Also, Even a settlement with 300+ defense will not stand a chance against these guys on Very Hard mode so keep that in mind.

A note on supply lines... They not only share scrap, but they also share food that can be planted (corn, carrots, watermelon...). When arming them settlers typically are horrible shots so give them flamethrowers and 1 fuel (just one and then they never need more). There are lots of flamethrowers at Sturgis Ironworks and they respawn. Plasma guns can be modded to flamers too later on and do massive damage. Also on scrapping... learn would is worth picking up. You want stuff that is either aluable and light, like all ammunition and meds, or things that that have lots of scrap for the size. You will learn what scrap you really need to keep an eye on. If you take science and gun and armor modding then you will find things like copper, crystal, and aluminum will be hard to come by. If you have the money at vendors then get things like hot plates, cameras, microscopes... collect bones and dirty water and grow crops as you can make adhesives and oil this way. Pick up anything with adhesives and oil too. You will find that shipments are usually really expensive and it is better to just buy junk that has it, but sometimes you need more so it is good to know which merchants have the shipments you need. It might be worth having merchants at your settlements... especially general (for scrap) and weapons (for ammo). They also let you sell things like cooked food and purified water along with ammo and meds you don't typically use. Also if you want to scrap weapons and armor then get the scrapper perk (under luck) as it will let you get back a lot more stuff like screws and gears and not just wood, plastic, steel, and leather.If you collect guns and armor to scrap though they are usually pretty heavy. You can sell some of the more expensive ones for quite a lot and the more addon they have the more valuable they are, so an assault rifle might not be worth it for something like 14 pound when you are likely only going to get $100 or so for it, one with a ton of mods on it might weigh only a few pounds more but might be worth almost $500. Always fill up before you return to your home base... You can also give stuff to followers (including dogmeat) to carry stuff and power armor and some perk let you carry more too. Also note that the fish packing plants tend to have a lot of aluminum (trays), hospitals have microscopes and trays, offices and police stations have fans, typewriters, pens pencils, coffee cups, and ash trays. If you take scrap anything mods to clean up the garbage in the settlements you also get a lot of extra scrap this way while making your settlements cleaner. Do not be a cheater and take mods to give you piles of loot. I ran across one that gave settlements 25 water and 25 food for each water pump you put in. that is just cheesy and should never be done. You will get bored of the game if you make things too easy... or by using console commands to get stuff. Just don't do it.

My settlements tend to get whatever I have a lot of on hand. After I rescue Valentine, some settlement is going to have most people walking around with submachine guns. After Ft Hagen, Institute weapons and synth armor. Not much damage per shot, but when 14+ people open up at once, they chew up any that comes near.

A thing I like to do, particularly when I know that I will be building extensively in a settlement, is to set up a junk vendor in that settlement. That way I can start by buying stuff directly from them before travelling around. It requires Local Leader 2 and a few other perks, as well as a lot of caps, but it's worth it.

I know its a glitch but duplication is the way I go about it , I will duplicate all 32 components like steel , wood etc until I have 10,000 of each. All by scraping and storing at the same time. This does the size glitch too but after ive got my 10k I will duplicate it again and store 10,000 in a container and just duplicate when I run out. Very handy when using components on settlements like vault 88 which needs sooo much rubber and steel

Love the provisioner aspect! I learned to "chain" each settlement together, so I don't have the runners going all the way across the map, like from Sanctuary down to say, Jamaica Plain or Murkwater. I found that some provision routes would go through some tough areas, like the Fallon's Dept. Store area, which has a bunch of high-level super mutants. I lost that connection more than once and it never returned. If I wasn't such a dunce with computer stuff, I'd put up a pic of my trade routes. Just from one settlement to the next closest, then direct another settler from that one to next closest, and so on. The Quincy area is especially difficult for provisioners, but when I got the Vault Tec add-on/location, I was able to link some of the southeast settlements so all are tied together now and the runners are able to skirt that area better. Keep up the terrific tips and ideas!

I'll get there with the details of how to do this stuff. Just one guy who loves the game, didn't occur to me that others would be interested in some of the unique things I do and have done. Some of the tricks I learned were from trial/error, incorporating them into the next play-through, learn, then next etc. Nothing new under the sun cliche', I know that many others who play and enjoy in obscurity have accomplished similar, maybe even exactly the same. I'm always intrigued at how different things happen each time I begin a new game. Once I got the explosive gauss rifle, haven't found it since. Huge thanks for keeping this game interesting with all the cool stuff you come up with...I know the "community" has a big hand in it too, offering their own ideas and work-arounds. I never imagined a game could have such a high value of re-play-ability. Haven't got bored with it yet! Off to figure out how to get the photo from the PS4 to where I can post it...

Shipments are great, especially with a cap making industry. I have rank 4 of strongback perk that allows me to fast travel while over encumbered. Great for looting everything. Also if you take all the junk out of your workshop your settlers that already have a job will give you junk each day, even without any scavengers assigned. I keep all my junk for building in only one settlement and they are all linked by supply routes. That way the other settlements bring in random junk and food. Even food that the settlement is not growing.

Ok this is long , but worth it ! First I gather everything you can scrap from sanctuary and red rocket (where dogmeats at) , then I go to sanctuary and scrap everything using the glitch where you hold the square and slide to the circle button , you can do this over and over on items until you’ve got a hundred or so of each material ! Then you one by one drop and do the glitch on the materials to build each one up , it will take a little while to do , but done right you will end up with 70,000 or more of each material in you work bench (do not go past 100,000 or your might lose it ) ! Then every settlement you have all you have to is link them to your main settlement and they can access this vast loot ! I do this and then start building a crap load of grenades and other stuff, and build up my player ! I’m level 150 before I ever meet up with momma Murphy and the gang at the museum ! It works , but it takes a little time !

Yeah, they're best for small Settlements that you want to forget about and then return to a month later in the game. It's a shame that there are so few jobs available to Settlers. Hopefully Bethesda takes a cue from mods like Northland Diggers and provides a full suite of occupations for Settlers when Fallout 5 releases in 2026.

Good way to earn early caps is to save every tool you find and buy every tool that vendors sell, then sell them to the maintenance guy at Vault 81. You can buy most tools for one cap and sell them for between 5 and 15 if I recall correctly. And tools are very common.

a note on supply lines: It works like wiring on a generator. Anything connected to the network needs only one connection. so you don't need a dozen supply lines to Sanctuary, for example. Just one will do. Usually when I access a new settlement, I check the supply lines, find the closest other settlement and send one of the local settlers there as a provisioner. This way, I don't wind up with a confusing spiderweb of supply lines going every which way. I also always build a scrapping station at each settlement and make sure it's staffed, so every settlement is contributing to the builds.

Spam water production +100. Find a settlement with a lot of water to place water purifiers. A lot of water purifiers and sell it. Believe me its the best way to make easy caps. Water is great just make sure to take it out of your workshop and store it in a container. Buy whatever you want then use the water to get your caps back and then some. There will be a lot of waiting for the water to replenish in your workshop (at least 24 hrs) and for shops to open. A companion helps to carry extra water. I have the water circuit Sanctuary to diamond city to bunker hill and back to sanctuary.
