We are building a homemade woodpile modeled after the Wizk!ds Deep Cuts woodpile. Do you have a preference when it comes to the final results? Built or Bought?

Thank you for this great comparison! The split dowels look really good - perfectly acceptable for a game table. In the end it would have been nice to hear total time and cost breakdowns between the two, but I would probably still choose the crafting option anyway. Thank you!

You make a great point. It took about 20 minutes for the "bought" woodpile. The "built" woodpile, took about 2 hours, not including dry times of glue and stain. I have no idea about the costs because I only used portions of materials I already had, most of which came from the dollar store. I'm sure the "built" woodpile was cheaper to make.

TheGameSmith Thank you! This was overall a really excellent comparison.

I like the home made version. The wizkids is nice, but the small wood piles are the same. The homemade piles all look different.

The built look fantastic! Being from the northeast I am quite familiar with piles of split logs. I almost think that the dowels with a wash instead of stain would look more accurate. I will be using your tutorial and I will post my results. Thanks

Also since I finished the video, Yes I am a fan of a built vs bought series. In my opinion I think build is always better. It adds uniqueness and for me personally, I have more pride and joy in stuff I invested into building.

But why use wooden dowels, when twigs are free?
@TheGameSmithsTable4 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point, but the pine tree branches I have access to don't split very well and the texture is all sappy (if that makes any sense), so I went with dowels because I had lots of them.

I've been a long time subscriber to The Bard's Craft, so I'm aware. As to his craft challenge, I'm not sure yet.

I would have textured the dowels to give a rough, bark-like finish before cutting them into lengths and splitting them.
