Bro for each item different tools are used. for eg: showel is used to break sand,dirt, gravel etc Axe for wood items such as planks and crafting table. Pickaxe for minning hard substance, hoe for making soil ready for cultivation. Iron items are the best value for use items. Diamond is there but it is very hard to find one. Axe is powerful than sword so it can be used to take down zombies, skeletons etc. We cant break bed rock.
