I am building a light-sport aircraft from scratch. I finished welding the fuselage from 4130 Chromoly tubing in this video. I talk about the landing gear that I will be designing and making for Defiance.
So far everything is coming together.
I am using 4130 .035 Chromoly tubing from www.wicksaircraft.com/
Wicks is a great place for all your aircraft parts! Mention JONAS10 for 10% off your order.

Yes! Love it! I’m an aero engineer and I fully support you and Wilson. Don’t let the haters (I predict there will be about 1,000,000) tell you that you don’t know what you’re doing. They’re just jealous that they don’t have the balls (volleyballs) to try something epic themselves. Super stoked to have another build series to follow.

Well, your comment here makes me feel a little better. As a fellow engineer (not aero, though), looking at some of the bracing design made me feel a little nervous (that first section in the triangular tail for example). But if someone with experience in this field isn't too worried, I guess I needn't either. I've always wanted to to do a plane build, but quite honestly don't have the balls to do it, as you said.
@erik6690
@erik6690 4 жыл бұрын
Andreas Hatz I didn’t say I wasn’t worried. I haven’t the faintest idea if it will flutter and kill him. It’d take a whole team of multi disciplined experts to really gain the highest possible level of confidence in any new aero design. I’m just proud of the people who obviously don’t have access to that and take the risk so we can all copy them after if it works. May those with the balls pave the way!

@@erik6690 - I guess he could at least check the torsional stiffness by applying a known sideways force to to top of the tail and measure the displacement. That lone unsupported horizontal bar in the base of the tail gives me the heeby jeebies.

@@MrAHatz Some tubes were not yet welded in do to other strut attach points and so on. but I have talked with a few aero designers that reached out and I have been cutting and changing a few things! So hopefully, we can all feel a little better about things!

Video was fantastic Jonas. For so many reasons. Call yourself a rebel, then put a Murphy Rebel crash clip in your video (which has design ties to the Beaver) and of course Wilson! Btw the rebel does not have the cross bracing because it's semi-monocoque design and has a square cage in the cockpit area made from aluminum square tubing that the firewall ties into. Rebel is a legit backcountry airplane as well. That was a harsh attempt at landing. Keep 'em coming. Great work and good luck with the build

I have designed and built race cars with exotic suspensions. You have a great design and I was wondering when somebody would finally do that on a STOL. I thought Mike Patey would. Follow Mike's lead with a carbon fiber carbon fuselage for strength and safety. Speaking of safety, please consider braces or mounts that will direct the engine away from the cockpit for a 60 mph or less nose crash. If competing in STOL Drags, I would consider rollover protection (I know... extra weight) in case you catch a wingtip or landing gear when you slip at low altitude to reduce speed. How about massive speed brakes instead of slipping? GREAT NAME, by the way. Keep this build vlogs coming, they are great.
@JonasMarcinko

Thank you! The more I think about it the more I may add a few more supports for the un wanted crash. I’ve thought about a large speed brake flap that comes down underneath the fuselage.

This is making good progress Jonas. As far as the landing gear is concerned, think of the lever effect on torsion as you will increase the length of the gears. You need to design them so they have good torsion control (a bit like your fuselage)

Your emphasis on running the tubings full length for structural integrity to compensate for the torque developed at the higher HP and speed is a lesson to be reckoned with. Maybe Yogi-scout will someday meet Defiance. Thanks for sharing, MJ.

Jonas, I think you were on the right track early in this video when you were talking about the triangle vs the square frame. The triangle is inherently one of the strongest forms in nature/engineering/whatever you want to call it. Making it fit your needs in the airframe may be another issue though. Applying it to a practical fuselage might not be all that easy if you want usable space inside. The project is looking really good. We'll be watching... (I've been wearing a beard for more than 40 years . My wife of 38 years has never seen me without one. When she saw an old photo of me in my Navy uniform, she asked, "Who's that kid??") ;^)

If you get tail shimmy, then ..maybe add some tension wire from the cockpit to the tail structure's tip? I've no idea if that works for airplanes, but in other structures of light design, whenever you observe a tendency to move, you strap it with wire (if the project doesn't allow for more structure to be added). Best parts about using wire, it's light, and you don't need crazy amount of tension on it, just enough to cure the wobble.

Super impressive build - way to jump right in! Just a suggestion - if you want to put some real numbers behind the hunches about what adding/removing/re-sizing certain tubes will do in terms of torsional or bending stiffness, Solidworks has a great module for evaluating the strength of tubular weldments. I think you can get a free seat of Solidworks as an EAA member, and I can send you an example of a bushplane fuselage analysis I did. It can be really surprising what you'll find.

Do the kit-fox suspension, just use a cantilever lengthwise design for yours. Shocks get hidden inside the fuselage, forces get distributed lengthwise, weight distribution is up to your needs (longer or shorter tie rod after the lever brace (or however it's called), what's not to like? F1 does it, they face the same issues (outside of shocks, but that's not an issue considering desert racers use it and they're just fine) as you do. Air travel, weight distribution et cetera.

After thinking about your inboard shock absorber system, I realized you need a sway bar to connect the two struts. Without the sway bar (assists in allowing cars to corner flat) it is possible to suffer the Draco takeoff crash when only one side of the suspension compresses due to a crosswind. Also, I'm not sure about the copy of the Capella fuselage for torsional stiffness with a 350 hp engine. Maybe a 100 to 150 hp engine might be okay, but the Capella wasn't designed for hot rodding. I think you should follow the Scrappy build and cover the birdcage in carbon fiber. Then you should be able to handle Scrappy (500hp) power. Actually, a carbon fiber monocoque design eliminates the birdcage while saving weight and increases strength. (Your next build) ..... Back to work
@JonasMarcinko
@JonasMarcinko 4 жыл бұрын
J Schifferle I had the same thoughts about the carbon. And also thought about adding the two down tubes to the top of the firewall :/ but ugh it adds so much weight. I may see how the suspension works before adding a sway bar. It may not be that acceptable to the crosswind loads. But we will see!

@@JonasMarcinko Hey Jonas, I hate to keep bothering you on the suspension, but this was my speciality for about 5 years, and I don't want to mislead. After doing some calculations in my head, I forgot how high the CG of your plane which will amplify a roll moment in a turn or in a crosswind. The sway bar will probably be critical. With this type of independent suspension, if you compress one side with a load from a turn or crosswind, the other side that loses the load and starts a catapult force that throws more weight to the compressed side which exacerbates a bad situation. The sway bar will prevent the lightly loaded side from transferring more weight by lifting that wheel which caused the load to transfer back and thus reduces the load and roll to the compressed side. I hope that wasn't confusing but with a high CG, roll rates are very important in vehicle stability. Thanks and that's my last input. Have a Merry Christmas and New Years. John S.
