I cannot help but think of the wood that is necessary for the fire for heating the sauna and for your home - and of Christina’s grief at the cutting of the forest near her parents home. How to find the balance of the cycle?
@Talasbuan Жыл бұрын
It is a legitimate concern, firewood is easily regenerated. No need to destroy whole ecosystems for that. It is not the use of wood that is the problem, it is the way it is harvested that is. And in sweden the forestry companies have "rationalised" their methods so they cut everything down in a large area, destroys everything, destroys the soil, the habitat, the biodiversity, and establish a monoculture with only one species of trees in straight rows and same age. The natural forest is forever gone, replaced with a monoculture with very lacking biodiversity. This is absolutely not necessary, one can use resources from the forest and still do it in a way that doesn't kill the forest.

Hei to the three of you! What a nice sauna! Very impressive, and I bet being built of logs lets it get pretty hot, too. I've never seen such a fancy stove for a sauna! Wow, it looks like a piece of artwork. Here we use a simple stove for ours, made of an old 55-gallon oil drum, laid on its side, with a square hole cut in the end for the wood, and a little round hole cut in the side at the other end for the stove pipe. Usually, we can find a drum lying around someplace, or at most buy one for around $20, depending on where you live. To hold the rocks, if you live near a salmon cannery, you can find an old canning rack, which can be cut along the edge so it can be bent in thirds over the curve of the drum stove. I couldn''t find one of these for our current stove, so used some concrete re-inforcing wire bent over the stove. I had to pick the rocks carefully so they don't fall through the holes. We find good rocks off the beach. Volcanic ones with holes in them are the best. So far, I've never had any rocks explode. We call our sauna's meqii--Yup'ik word for steam--or meqiivik, place of steam. Historically, people in SW Alaska used fire baths, where the fire was built up really hot in the mens' house, and people would sit in there and sweat. They even made little things out of shavings to hold in their mouths so they wouldn't burn their lungs. The Russians brought the idea of the steam bath, since they arrived in the early 1800s; or it could have been Scandinavian fishermen, including some Finns, who arrived in the 1880s, but I think it was the Russians, because on Kodiak Island, they still call their steam baths "banya," a Russian word meaning bath. The first meqii I built, I tried to build the floor all nice and level, which meant that the water made puddles on the floor instead of draining (at least I didn't put insulation in the floor!). I also used nails with heads on them for the seat, which meant you burned your butt when sitting down, unless you remembered to cool the seat off with cold water. Later I learned to use finishing nails, with small heads, so they can be set below the surface. We use wings--goose or crane--to hit ourselves with instead of birch branches, but I think it's for the same thing: it concentrates the heat on a sore spot. In Sweden or Finland does it sometimes become a macho contest, to see how hot people can take steams? Maybe that's not Löla ;), so we choose who we steam with. My wife's uncle used to take them really hot. I once took one with him where the temperature got up to 350 F (177 C). Normally we just take them up to around 250 F (121 C) to 280 F
@johnbreiby9624 Жыл бұрын
(I hit something wrong) to about 137 C. Uncle had me crawling out the door. I think a big difference between our meqiis and your saunas are that we have a hot room and a cool room to cool off. You can just run outside and jump in the snow or the creek. We're wimpy, so we just sit in the cool room to cool off ;-). Unskyld for å skrive for mye. Alle beste fra Alaska.

Looks really pretty and well-done. It is a Finnish sauna system, and it looks very up-graded. Kudos! Mostly we have some fire-resistant plate under the burner (stove), too - did I miss the pic of it? Perhaps it is old-fashioned to have such? Sometime sparks flew out when you opened to fill up more wood, especially if you had spruce to burn.

Great video! YT is full of "professional" so it's nice to see normal people working together. I'd like to add fresh air to the points that Matias made regarding how good the Löyly is. Having a flow of fresh air will provide you with oxygen so that the löyly doesn't feel suffocating and you can spend more time in the löyly. Also the stove or kiuas needs a lot of air to burn well without producing harmful gasses. So adding an air inlet would be a huge plus. Otherwise nice work!
@Talasbuan Жыл бұрын
Yes, true. We made big holes for the water to be able to drain, they work as air in as well, but there needs to be an air out somewhere close to the roof as well.

The sound of the steam! Ah! Satisfying! Evocative! I was fortunate enough to have enjoyed so much wonderful sauna time at the friend's house in Tulsa Oklahoma. Little did I know back then how well his father's sauna was constructed. The sauna being located next to the pool made for some great transitions in the summer, and in the cooler parts of the year. Those childhood sauna memories with friends and family remain some of the best. They also set my personal standard for how a sauna experience must be. For those occasions when I spent time in other saunas. Most of those times in the United States, those sauna experiences were not as wonderful. But some sauna is always better than no sauna.

Sauna! We already learned respectful behavior as children when we went to the sauna. My grandfather made a vihta (= en kvast in swedeish) of birch tree branches, tied it together with a birch branch It's was called to vittas. Vihta was soaked in water on the sauna bench until wonderfully soft. We was beaten on the bare skin with these branches. After that we went swimming in the sea. Absolutely wonderful. In Finland they say that a person is reborn in a sauna! you absolutly needed a finnish gay to do it for you because swedish can't do a sauna properly. I'm sorry for saying that. There are several words related to sauna and sitting in the sauna in Finnish that cannot be translated into English or even Swedish

Maybe it is easier to grasp the specialness of the phenomen "löyly", when you think about that ordinary 'steam' is just "höyry" in Finnish. They are absolutely not synonymous and cannot subsitute for each other - as little as you can call a bluebell a dandelion. You will have spiritual, cleansing, and purifying experience from every löyly, Kalle, thinking of friendship, too, as Mattias came to support you. Old mistakes out, and a space for new and cleaner ideas, in - body and soul! Thank you for sharing. Den gamla bastun drar en lättnadens suck och glädjer sig i sitt timmerhjärta! Löyly used to mean soul in Finnish language, like every living thing has a soul so does sauna. One important aspect of owning a sauna is to respect the spirit inhabiting it, so every time you've finished bathing you need to put a couple logs in the kiuas (stove) to please the spirit of the sauna and keep the sauna healthy and working.
