My hubby and his engineer friends had this same idea 20 years ago. Methodology was a little different, but our floor's still in pretty good shape! Also - found a supplier for the water noodles before they were colored and bought them in bulk for cheaper. (They're actually pipe insulation - apparently some employee from the plant where they're made thought it would be a good idea to bring a couple home from work for his kids in the pool and the modern day water noodle was born.) Happy dancing!

Purchase Marley Tape or Gaff tape, (Leave about 1" space between wall and vinyl (marley) floor so you can tape down long edge to floor.Tape one short edge, roll it out, (You can/should let it lay unrolled for a day under lights if able so it will lay flatter.)stretch it (Or old school kick method) tape down other short edge. Repeat with next roll leaving 1/16" between long seams between rolls. Tape down long edge starting on one side of room and working to other. Don't try to do two seams at once as edges may need to get adjusted. Use one continuous taping for each seam.I know some studios to use a layer of gaff tape and tape over with marley tape for extra durability.

Soooo clever! How high is the floor's finished height from the concrete? Is it 3" (2" foam + 2 layers plywood at 1/2 ea)? Do you know if a 1" tall foam piece would work just as well?
@missrebeccadance5 жыл бұрын
It is about 2.5 inches from the concrete. I'm not sure how a 1" disk would do over time. I went with 2inches for density and shock abosorbshion. I know some of the big concerns for dance studios is the building permits and handicap accessibility. My best solution to avoid ramps, would be to either build up your lobby floor area to match the height or if your lobby space is large enough to have a gradual raise to the studio doors. I hate having a ramp into the studio, as it takes up studio space and is an accident waiting to happen, if dancers over shoot their leaps to the ramp and twist or break and ankle. Also, if you use tile flooring in your lobby, that would decrease your height to about an inch difference which might pass permitting inspections. I hope this helps!!

Hi Rebecca, what are the dimensions of pool noodles you used? I found small ones with 6 cm diameter...do you think that would work?
@missrebeccadance5 жыл бұрын
They were jumbo size, not the smaller ones that you buy at the store. I got them online in bulk

I can only find 3/4 inch interlocking plywood. Where did you get your 1/2 inch for the top layer?

If you've found 3/4" that is what I would use. I don't think you could go wrong with that thickness. :)

After installing the first layer with the noodles pieces, they added a second plywood layer & staggered across the seams & screwed them together to create the floating floor.

Hi Rebecca! This is a great idea and I will probably end up doing this at my new studio! Were you concerned at all about the pool noodles wearing unevenly? I'm worried if I choose to do this that down the road I could have a sagging spot in the floor. What type of Marley did you choose to lay on top of the plywood? And what company did you end up purchasing from? Any chance you'd have a few minutes to chat? - Holly
@missrebeccadance6 жыл бұрын
Holly Hayes we can chat next week. I did have those concerns, but when I compared the pool noodle to the same material that dance flooring companies sell, which are foam blocks, I felt it's a no brainer. The weight is so evenly distributed it doesn't sag in any spot. If you're concerned add some extra support add a disk in the center of each Square foot and a thicker top layer of plywood 3/4 inch vs 1/2 inch.

Is this able to withstand gymnastic routines?
@missrebeccadance6 жыл бұрын
Gymnast Eliza it would, but I dont know if it would be a bouncy as you would need it. For dance we need a little give in the floor to help absorb the shock of landing. It's not meant to help give a bigger spring off the floor lake the gymnastic mats/floors that are in a gymnastic school.

April MacLean i think the foam would crush as opposed to being the crosscut noodles. Also a different foam density. Not an expert, just from using both in building and boat repair

Chie l It's very strong. We do ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary and salsa. If you are concerned you could use 3/4 inch plywood on the bottom layer for extra support and strength, instead of 1/2 inch on the bottom.

@missrebeccadance6 жыл бұрын
Max Pearson No, not too bouncy. If you make one of the layers 3/4" instead of 1/2" it would be a bit firmer especially if guys or men are dancing on the floor. In the video. My daughter is standing on just one layer of plywood, so it seems to be more bouncy than it actually is.
