So many questions/thoughts so I will start with a small one - How do you insulate a copper pipe under a first floor as the pipe is close to the floorboard. Notching the joists deeper of course is not an option. Some may say use plastic pipes that drill through the joists. There is evidence of bacterial growth on low temperature systems with plastic pipes, lower flow rates and increased air ingress increase over copper. As an aside, when I need pipe insualtion to bylaw standard, unheated areas etc, I have to order from Birmingham (approx 80 miles away !) as nobody stocks it in any meaningful quantity locally ! So very few in these parts insulates properly in unheated ares now let alone in voids between floors/behind plasterboard .... Hey ho.. Only a few years to go.... Rant over !
