Building Sleeping Lofts With Heavy Old Beams! My Eco-Friendly Cabin-Build [Part 8]

In this video I continue my cabin-build by getting some important things done: ceiling off the bottom of the house, install sewer pipes and also start building my two sleeping lofts. To the latter I use some old second hand beams that proved a little difficult to work with due to their size and weight.

Thank you for sharing your thought process on the building decisions, I really enjoyed hearing why you are making the choices you're making. The beams are incredibly beautiful, what a lovely addition to your home! I so agree that doing things by hand is a whole different experience that has its own rewards. I'm glad to hear you say you'll be more careful in the future, working while tired is not a good idea.

Respecting environmental values and promoting sustainable development have been in people's conversations for a long time. Acting according to them, on the other hand, still requires significant investment and a change of attitude. Anders' exemplary choices act as a powerful force for change. This is exactly what we need at this critical time. Well done!

Hej Anders!

Dear Anders, all this progress and your house looks great! 👏🎉Using and working with second hand wood feels perfect in many ways, feeling the quality, history and reliability of it. And it won't bend with humidity like new wood often does. It's a win win - eco friendly and valuable for you 😊 I often work with powertools but totally get your point: by choosing handtools you already have a deep connection to your house, so it is already a home even before living in it. And what I liked most about the video: even with a tired body (and a nearly bad accident) you look so happy! Must be the wonderful, mindful and beautiful housebuilding work - thank you for sharing and inspiring!! We can learn so many things every time by watching and hearing the explanation for your choices🙏 Wishing you all the best, continued success and fun✨️🍀🤗

We can all find reasons why, we can’t do what Anders is doing. Some of those reasons are valid (pain) and some are less valid (“I don’t wanna” 😅 ). But I appreciate Anders highlighting the trade off we’re unconsciously making every time we pick up a power tool. In your case, you should obviously just keep using power tools. But maybe some of us should think twice next time 🤔

Hi Anders, What a delightful video .. a little bit of everything…from sawing and building, cooking for a helpful friend. Loved it.. about pesky mice.. I’ve lived in my 640 sqr ft home here in Winnipeg Canada for 24 years , never had mice until 7 years ago. I think what has happened is our summers have become drier and hotter, less snow, that I’ve noticed the stones around the foundation moving away from the basement wall..so there may be cracks now down below that I can’t see. I’m going to buy steel wool ( I hear they hate it ) and I will place it around where I can… I hear you about not working when you are tired.. Take care get some rest…😊 Thanks for sharing.

Ander's you are a very hard worker Your new home is coming along very well, love those heavy beams for the loft, I think it is wonderful that you are using hand tools to construct your home and not electric or gas powered. I believe one can appreciate the home more in your case . I am aware of only 1 Other you tuber that build their log cabin the way you are constructing yours , with hand tools ,eggbeater type drills , They used ropes or chain hoist for placing beams . Your home will be very strong , and beautiful.

24:36 I notice your reused beams are also sitting on the wood on top of the windows. This means the load of the beams is purely on the screws you used to hold those horizontal pieces in place. I see it again clearly at 25:52. I am not sure if that has been thought, but that the weight of your loft is also putting load on them. In the building I did when I was younger we always support them with uprights as you mentioned earlier in the video. Best of luck with what you are doing in any case. I am very much enjoying these videos.

Great episode. I understand your explanation about not requiring jack studs for your windows (the side supports, holding the header above the windows). But I do not see adequate support for those large beams you are using for your two lofts. From what I could see, it looked like there was no significant support for those, beyond a cross member upon which they sit, which is nailed into the vertical members only. I believe the cross member needs support from below. I urge you to review that work and consider using jack studs, or equivalent, as I fear they could collapse. Perhaps I am missing something in your design. Thank you. I love your show.

Same thoughts - totally agree with Anders about the windows not needing the jack studs, but worried about the lack of support under the heavy beams. Perhaps he's got something else in mind to beef up support?
@janinafisher101
@janinafisher101 6 күн бұрын
I had to stop the video to comment on this too! I found it totally alarming that the entire loft, with the weight of the loft floor, all the beams, and anything placed on that loft floor, is resting only on the small horizontal cross members which has no absolutely support from below. And then, Anders, you go on to explain why you are not making the window supports stronger, but one side of the beam is resting right on top of that one small cross member. This totally looks like an accident waiting to happen, and I am quite alarmed! Okay, I have now gone back and watched some more and taken another look at the beams. To my mind it would be much stronger if the beams were flipped and placed ON TOP OF the 2 x 6 that is now above them. It does seem that there is space in the cavity between the 2 x 6 and the roof, though some of the beams would have to be moved over a bit to avoid the rafters.

Thanks, I'm very very happy to hear that - and thanks for the concern also! And OMG so many comments on those beams - I should've explained the process more. But I will support them further - I just didn't have the angled metal plates for it at the time and I wanted to get those "for next episode"-clips included before filming deadline. The creative process of making a film sometimes affects the logical process of building. Because I'm thinking about so many things at once when I'm filming and creating a story I don't always get to include all relevant details in every video.

Hi Anders, this video felt like I was there by myself. and I have tried to help you up with the heavy beam for the sleeping loft, but it was probably not enough 🤪 when I saw you balancing on the ladder with this load aaaaaah

Anders, I have to say that I started out this video thinking how much I enjoy watching the process of traditional building. I really enjoyed this until I got to the point where you sat the beams up - and I have commented below beneath the comments of someone else who had the same very alarmed reaction to mine. At the end of the video I see that you are putting the floor in the loft, and I really hope you will take a serious look at the comments, and at the building method and make some changes to give more support to the loft!

Thanks for the concern, but don't worry :) . The beams will of course be further supported and you'll see how in next video. I just needed to get some stuff in the hardware store but couldn't make it before filming deadline. The reason why you saw my lay the floor was because I wanted to include some "next episode" clips to create excitement for next time (not to make people worried). The process of making videos when living can sometimes influence the process of the build, but don't worry ;)

I'm so glad you're safe and well after such heavy work on those beams! They look beautiful, though, and old-growth wood like that will last you for a long time as well due to the density. I'm eager to see what comes next in this build! I wonder, are you planning on adding further decor or color to the outside of the walls? (Obviously inside isn't done yet!) Are you afraid that the sewer pipe will freeze up in winter, or should the relative warmth from both the house and the ground keep it clear enough? No need to answer me right now, as I'm sure I'll see them soon on your channel, haha. Stay healthy and safe, and good luck to you!

Hej Anders. I started binge watching your channel. Love it. But there is one thing I like to mention in terms of the construction: at 28:59 you see the three heavy beams laying on the c24 beams. (Which I guess are held by screws from the side). So from my perspective it looks like all the pressure of the heavy beams incl. you sleeping on top of it (and making love) goes into those screws as lateral force. If I remember correctly, lateral force is not ideal for screws and beams. Instead I would create pressure force on existing beams in the construction. You may give it a thought. All the best for you

I was watching and thinking - after sawing all those floorboards and lifting heavy beams you'll soon look like Schwarzenegger :)) .. building a house requires actually a huge amount of constant physical effort and brainwork to make the right decisions. It's interesting how you connect the ceiling beams to the upper belt of the walls to bind both outer walls together ..? 🤔
@andersboisentinyhouse
@andersboisentinyhouse 6 күн бұрын
Haha, yeah I guess! Ah, maybe not quite so ... But yes, "no pain no gain" I guess ;) ;) Yes, I positioned some of the beams so I can connect them with some of the rafters for also tying them more together - but I'll get to that a little later ;)

all the weight of your loft is resting on boards held up by a few fasteners. Each of the boards appear to have two nails drawing them tight against the wall support boards. over time the fasteners could work loose and fail. Think of the fasteners as metal pins. Do you believe the pins will hold that much weight? I would add support post under them.
@andersboisentinyhouse
@andersboisentinyhouse 8 күн бұрын
Well, I believe that the weight of the roof is chanelled through the big vertical beam in the middle of the building and in the construction of the two gables. Or do you disagree? But I am considering to make ekstra support for the roof just in case.
@revenirbooks
@revenirbooks 8 күн бұрын
I agree. It's not the weight of the roof he's referring to, but the weight of the loft. The loft beams are being held up by a single horizontal piece of wood at each end that is nailed in place. This means the entire weight of the loft will be on those few nails (or screws). Vertical planks under each of those horizontal pieces will transfer the weight to the ground.

those windows needs jack studs to carry the load of those beams to the floor, I'm not an expert but it looks to me like you are resting all of that load on screws. it looks strong but its really just a matter of time before the screws give out on your loft.

Amazing work, I really enjoyed watching it and love how you explain tings. I have a question regarding the beams. They seem to sit on horizontal thin studs, which carry all the load of the beams and transfer it to the vertical studs next to it. For my understanding: is this enough to carry all the load, wouldn't a stud right beneath the beam a safer solution?
