I'm saving this to watch later. I have 5.5 acres rich with squirrels. The half acre is fenced in and my cat and dog feast on them. But I could snare them on the 5 acres if stuff hits the fan. Wood fire grilled squirrel for as long as needed. Also deer roam the property so I can definitely have a supply of meat.

I've used both wire and fishing line (never had one chew out - their instinct to run is very strong, but I also don't let them work it for hours). You will NOT snag a head every time, so these are best to set around a camp so you can hear a caught one trashing about and go dispatch it (these seldom kill - at least I've never had one kill). Smearing a bait up and down your snare stick (and for heaven's sake, put MULTIPLE snares on each one) works very well and reduces your wait time. You don't need to actually bait the stick, just make it smell like food (peanut butter works great). They do work, but it is a numbers game. The more squirrels around, the better. Also, the more used to people they are, the better. Scattered squirrels in the woods are much, much harder to get than the ones in parks, around camp grounds, etc. That's where you will find the most of them anyways, since the human presence provides food and prevents predation allowing them to grow fat and numerous. If you are in a more urban/suburban areas and can find a concealed place to put a snare stick, you can likely grab a few on the DL while reading a book on a park bench with an ear open.

A useful trick to form eyelets in snare wire is to wrap/ tie the wire around a twig in the right diameter you just snap right under the eyelet to get it out. Also, it is very important to alwys work the kinks out of the wire as shown- with as much care as possible. I´ve seen people break wire several times because they thought the wire will straighten itself out if they just give it a hard tug.

in Northern Alberta Canada i use 10-15 foot long poles and put 5 snares on the pole the reason for the long pole is the squirrel hangs high off the ground so you don't have the snare raided and 5 snares per set pole is because several squirrel will use the pole and iv caught 3 on single set

Years ago in Florida I made a spring pole trap in the backyard to test out a trigger system I watched on Dave Canterbury’s channel. It’s going to sound cruel but hear goes, after a few misses i finally caught a gray squirrel perfectly another neck, I watched the whole thing, anyway, the squirrel was picked up off the ground with the wire around its neck and he just hung there scratching at it off and on for about ten minutes. It wouldn’t die, just hung there and I went out with welding gloves and let him go. My conclusion was, even though it was caught perfectly he didn’t weigh enough to put enough weight on the loop to strangle himself. Idk if all types of squirrel are built like that but the eastern gray, idk. Thanks

I've caught them with snare sticks like this and had them snagged on necks, shoulders, with one leg through, and even by the back leg. I've not had one kill itself yet. I'm sure it could happen, but if I found one dead I would probably assume it stressed itself to death (which I've had them do in cage traps without a scratch on them if they are in there too long).

@@oaksparoakspar3144 sounds on par with my experience. All the survival books seem to presume it just kills them automatically, guess it pays to practice those things all the way, not just in theory. Thanks

I'm not ever really gonna use this, unless it's a SHTF situation, and at that point, as bad as it sounds, I don't care as long as its there when I check the trap.

here is some info if you need it, & you can delete my comment after you get it TLDR = if you find a baby squirrel warm it up, so you can return it to its mom & or safely rehydrate it, so you can safely give it formula baby squirrels can't stay warm, drink, eat, or eliminate without help till 90 days old mom will not reject a baby for your scent BUT MOM WILL REJECT A COLD BABY, so bring it inside to warm it up to human body temperature & Reunite it with mom if you can, , look up "Reuniting tree squirrel babies with their mom" mary cc squirrels reunite if this fails seek out a wildlife rehabilitator for help & if all of that also fails use its weight in grams divided by 20 to set how many cc's to feed it every 2 hours & to prevent aspiration pneumonia feed it via 1 - 3 CC oral syringe feeder lying tummy down please , look up 2018/09/11 example video , "Thirsty baby squirrel!" Jasmin121176 , & rehydrate it for a day using Pedialyte , they NEED mom or formula to supply adequate nutrition till they reject it at 10 weeks old a FAST growing baby squirrel needs wildlife grade formulas used in a zoo like "fox valley day one " or DIY 24 hour perishable 3 parts goats milk, 1 part yogurt 1 part heavy whipping cream or a very few puppy formulas will work , (Goat's Milk Esbilac? ) but NOT just "Esbilac " a squirrels weight in grams is 20 times the safe stomach capacity in ml & cc's per feeding so find its weight in grams divide it by 20 , & thats the number of ML/CC's to feed each meal this "5 percent rule" stomach capacity to weight ratio quantity as each meal only works if you use a metric gram scale at 6 weeks of age let it practice gnawing solids like; fruits, monkey chow, & dry Puppy science diet. at 8 week of age test if a baby squirrel can drink water from a shallow container AND crack a nut look up 1X1X2 foot nesting box & 4X4X7 foot pre-release cage so you can slowly free it, because after 6 months of age squirrels become unpleasantly wild There is some good information on the Internet, but other sites give advice that will kill the animals & some do this on purpose Cow’s milk, goat’s milk, human baby formulas, & "most" other pet products lack nutritional value, are less digestible & boiling or scalding them wont fix it over the long term of 2 months these eventually WILL cause failure to thrive, MDB , & death due to malnutrition squirrels don't get & or survive rabies long enough to give it & head trauma mimics rabies baby squirrels can be fearless & very sociable, so, its only an orphan if it pursues or climbs you, or a pet BUT stop ANY pets from touching it since digestive & oral bacteria can kill it see also "Helping pet squirrels become wild again" mary cc squirrels tametowild, "squirreltales dot org" , hsvma org assets pdfs hsvma_wildlife_care_handbook pdf squirrel-rehab org rehabinfo infantfeeding html "squirrelrefuge dot org" , "thesquirrelboard dot com", justpaste . it / 36jzb

I like to put squirrel on a grate in a dutch oven just above about an inch or two of hard cider then cover it up and let it steam bake, get all that apple flavor all the way through, even better if I can do it with a bird of some kind but the apple flavor can cut down on the gamey taste you sometimes get with squirrel.
