Who was Miss Helen Austin? Was she a famous actress? It would have been scary to walk across those temporary footwalks.

13 years later, I have an answer. John W. Austin was an officer of Detroit Graphite Company and was hoping to secure the contract for painting the bridge. The construction began in May of 1927 with Austin’s sixteen year old daughter Helen Austin hammering the first stake into the bedrock.
