I love this video as much as your early content in which you explained the different types of way to play the game: open, narrative and matched. The only portion that's missing, for a trifecta, is a breakdown of the unit roles within an army; for example:support, tank, striker, flanking and tech. Having a basic knowledge of each role helps save money when deciding what to buy and gives new players a basic structure to build upon. Keep the good work up amigo!!!!

@@zachariahjock91190 probably orks. 2 start collecting boxes and 2 warcry boxes if you can still find them. Slaves to darkness can be a good start maybe not the cheapest. But you can expand into multiple builds later on. They can be taken in any chaos army(tzeentch, khorne, nurgle) get a start collecting, chaos sorcerer, chaos lord, and demon prince as a start. Then figure out which way you want to take it. Seraphon: 2 skink start collecting, a skink box, a Lord kroak gives you a nice start. And they're super competitive at the moment.

@t4washere3846 жыл бұрын
There is also the "baby steps" start where you get the "3 Stormcast and some paints and a brush" box to see if this whole painting thing is for you. Followed by the Storm of Sigmar I guess if you want to try a demo version of the game. Its also another way of getting the two extra big hammer guys the bigger boxes lack.
@t4washere3846 жыл бұрын
Also it just hit me that if you want to stay on the cheap skirmish level you can follow up the Storm of Sigmar box they the Skirmish book (ofcourse) and for a two games in one deal get the Warhammer Underworld : ShadeSpire starter box. Sure you may need to "proxy" the hero units but still, its a start. Heck if you are that strapped for cash, just get a ShadeSpire Warband box and play that cheaper (in theory ) game. They don't even need paint! (They just look better with it.)
@T3CH336 жыл бұрын
Buy a starter, storm of sigmar, and a blood and thunder box, sell the half you don't want. Boxes like Blightwar/the old island of blood are EXCEPTIONAL value for money if you run both armies like me, if not the same theory as my starting point applies, sell the bits you don't want/need. Scour ebay for second hand minis or the half of the starter box you want. Priming and basecoat sprays are usually better and cheaper if you use Krylon, Hycote or Plastikote sprays, in many cases the metallics they do are better than GW paints for far less (love my copper stormcast). In terms of paints get armypainter or coat d'arms paints (coat d'arms MAKE GWs paints and are far far cheaper in bigger pots). For brushes you can go expensive like windsor & newton but for stuff like drybrushing, basecoating etc you're better off with dirt cheap brushes from an art store (In fact thats all I use). For gaming tables, 2 pasting benches with support makes a nice large area to play on, and aquarium ornaments and fake plants make great scenery. DONT buy gw tools (snips etc) or tape measures as cheap ones from a local hardware store will last longer. (my dirt cheap tape measure has been working since rogue trader ;) ) Also look at what minis can pull double duty Daemons for example can be used in 40k and AoS, so can some other units like Bloodreavers and Arkanites, they can double as cultists.

I played Nurgle and Sylvaneth before the pandemic when I was in the local store playing games. I also bought my wife a night haunt army. So when people asked for cheap armies, I was only able to give them recommendations based on those 3 factions. For Nurgle (have a massive army) and Sylvaneth I have played them in tournaments and spend a lot of time reading over the battle tomes so it wasn't too hard to help someone get the most bang for their buck. Personally I thing the best recommendation is to at the different armies, see which ones you think look the best and would be fun to build and paint. Then look at the battle tomes and listen to the lore to find out which ones call out to you and use that to narrow down to just one choice. One of silver linings of everything being shut down right now is everyone has time to slowly buy pieces and build up the army before everyone will be playing again at local events or stores (without risk of getting exposed to COVID-19).

if you wanna start playing 40k super cheap then i highly recommend picking up the battle for verdos box set off of amazon ($48). the box is great if you like either space marines or orks. it comes with 28 minis that are push fit (note that some of the ork boyz are kinda the same sculpt but you can mix and match the heads and arms). i also recommend getting and army painters basic set which is like 30 dollars plus a basic hobby set ($18). so for less than $100 you can have all the necessary supplies plus 2 armies. the only things left that you need are the rule book and codex but i am pretty sure you can make due with the basic core rules that you can download for free from GW. at least for now. if you wanna get different armies than the stater set are also great. just make sure to read reviews about each of the products you buy (some of the reviews for the army painter set say they are great but others say they are not)and make sure you watch a couple of tutorials about painting and preparing your minis (removing mold lines, priming washing, etc). my only tip is to not never go cheap on the paints. buying a good set will really help beginners. i made a mistake of buying cheap paints as they don't stick well to minis (really made me reconsider the hobby after wasting 9 hours painting just 1 ork boy)

Painting the unit of 20 blood reavers has been my bane. But those Blood Warriors were the most fun I've had painting something that wasn't an HQ. Right now I have the whole starter set and have been painting the Khorne. I'm thinking about adding in a squad of Chaos Warriors to finish them off (Partly because the additional model I can kit bash into a retributor because I lost one while moving and partly because they look sweet with black and orange highlights to make it look like their armor is molten.) That works out to a very choppy 1000 point list for 165 USD retail. Could get ~50 back if you sold the Stormcast half.

I advise people not to go for the cheapest way, but for one providing them an excellent experience. I think both the normal starter box and Blightwar are ideal if you have a friend to join (and a good friend to play with is in my opinion more important than anything). Otherwise the most fun thing to do is to join a Path to Glory Campaign and start with the Start collecting box one likes best.

I'd always go with ebay or what people at your LGS are selling. Easiest way to pick something up for cheap. Just grabbed roundabout 20 Bretonnians for 80 Bucks, convert those to blood knights (death army conversion set + bluestuff and some Epoputty 30 Bucks) and you got 20 Bloodknights, plus a Vampire on Drake-Thingy and you get about 1250 points for 150ish bucks. Moral of the story, look out for good deals.

One thing I really like about AoS is the ability to build armies around the Grand Alliances instead of the smaller factions. This can be a huge boon if you're trying to start cheap because it lets you combine the Start Collecting boxes into a single force. You can also find good deals if you search on EBay for "sprues" especially if you're willing to use older versions of things like dwarfs, lizardmen and dark elves.

I would say a Grand Alliance Death army is cost effective, though not the cheapest option. You get the Start Collecting box for $85 (may have gone up since I last looked), which comes with a unit of skeleton warriors and black Knights as well as a Mortarch of your choosing. Buy that like three times and you have a full beefy unit of skelly bois, a big unit of black knights or three separate ones or you build them into Hexwraiths, etc., plus, you can build all three Mortarchs or sell two of them and buy other components of your army.

For 1000 points -2 SC boxes - Scar Vet on Carno: 240 -1 Troglodon: 180 -20 Saurus Warriors: 300 -15 Saurus Knights: 300 - 1 Razordon + Skink Handlers: 80 For 2000 points you can add a ton of skinks for cheap cost. There are also the behemoths to add some more umph. Lastly, there is a whole plethora of heroes to pick from. I know this list isn't as cheap as your Stormcast example, but it definitely saves some money. Really the great thing about Seraphon is that you could make an awesome army just from the SC box!

My favourite army is seraphon and imo getting two start collecting seraphon is good as out of the two kits you can get 24 saurus, 16 knights I think, a troglodon and a saurus oldblood on carnosaur. Additionally, you can use the extra parts from the knights to make one a scar vet for extra points, plus you can make a skink priest out of the Trog parts. That means that there is lots of mobility, ranged, magic, dispelling and combat. For £100. I think that’s cool personally

@@2Tough Randomly watched this vid, even though its a bit old thought I would respond. Technically 2x Seraphon Start collecting boxes are cheapest army build in entirety of AOS. Starting with 2 boxes you only need to add 2x 120mm oval bases and 1x 40 mm round base, total value around 160(US). This nets 1950 points with 2 battalions and 50 points for an extra command. 20 Warriors with four left over to be converted from bits into 1 Astrolith Banner, 1 Sunblood, and 2 Olbloods on Foot. 15 Saurus Knights and a Scar Vet on a Cold One. 2 Troglodons, an Olblood on Carno, and Vet on Carno. You can run Sunclaw Battalion and Firelance. You can find warhammer fantasy minatures on Amazon that cost relatively less than age of sigmar minatures. Just make sure to look at all the minatures that have been carried over and double check the battletomes. You can outfit them with round bases which I believe are $5.00 for a pack of 10 of 25mm or 30mm and the price goes up a little for the bigger bases. Overall a box of 10 to 20 troops of greenskins or freeguild is only $20-$30 bucks maybe less if you find a good deal. Compared to the $50-$60 you'd spend on a box of liberators which come in sizes of 5 to 10 units. This also applies to most of the newer age of sigmar infantry units.

But if you don't have a club then you are up the creak in more ways then one... I'd say Bonesplitterz is relatively good prospect in this regard - I think you'd have a fairly decent force that's easy enough to build further with 3 boxes of Savage Orruks and 1 Box of Boars - that would get you 3 units of 20 of whatever on foot orcs you want and either 2 units of five or 1 unit of 10 boars. The it's just whatver heroes you want - I think I can get that army, a Big boss and a wizard for under or around £100. Not too bad for a wargame army and gets you laying. You can then grow the force, or splash into Ironjawz for a big waaagh army etc

Hey Doug, two thoughts. First, why not talk about skirmish as an even cheaper entry point? Second, eBay has good deals on old world compendium units from old starter sets. And as always, check Craig's list, LetGo, and OfferUp. I recently bought the 6th edition starter set (greenskinz and freeguild) for $20. It's about 500 points for each faction and served as a good entry point got a broke grad student like me.

Hey Tristan! I plan on doing a separate video for Skirmish soon, but this was for AOS (generic). I think they warrant different takes. as for the Ebay/Craigslist etc. I dont mention it much because of it's inconsistency. Sure, they'll always be someone parting out the SE half of a starter box: but as for an entire army? Not reliable, and I like to keep my videos dependable :)

I started with the free peoples... they are about medium in price, cheaper than full new armies ( that werent ported from fantasy) like kharadron overlords and stormcast (im counting regular sets, not the starters sets and stuff)... the only problem with free peoples is that with most of their armies you need a LOT of infantry- which come in packets of 10
@OldWitchDoctor6 жыл бұрын
If you buff the khorne part of the starter set with the start collecting stuff, that could be pretty good. Of course you could also just buy tons of start collecting greenskinz boxes, they have all the greenskinz units in them, but they're not an elite force in the same way that stormcast or blood warriors are. But you get a bunch of dudes, and tons of warbosses, meaning that you can probably get all the wargear options that you want. And pretty much all the units are battleline if you have the greenskinz allegiance, if the cap is 1000 points then about 2 boxes should do the trick, granted it's not the most exciting list with regards to options, but they're great models.

I bought my first ever Space Marines (I know wrong game) Bought the Primaris half of The Know no Fear box set. Sadly it came with no instructions. So be wary of that if your new to building these models.

I run the Warhammer side of things at my FLGS. Warhammer has a bad reaction from non-players as being way too expensive to play. Whether this is deserved or not is another story (people complaining about warhammer prices but playing 2-3 Magic events a week...) but the main thing I do is try to find what the player wants to do first and then figure out best dollar value to accomplish it. Normally pushing the Battalion boxes and the SC! boxes are best choice but it's always risking limiting what a player may want to do. Also. come on. Two BCR start collecting boxes. a Frostlord on Stonehorn kit, and BAM! Run a Eurlbad and you got yourself a 2k list right there. And if anyone complains just react in true Beastclaw fashion. Eat em.

Exactly, with flgs prices this is about 120£ for 2k points (+10 for battletome)

Rory McLean bow when it comes to paints BCR can get tricky. but they can be as simple or complex as you want and the models are so gorgeous it won't take away from them with a simple scheme.

Cory Bragg They really appeal to me even tho I'm a pretty atrocious painter. Fun rules + awesome models can appeal to any group of player

Rory McLean I love my Beastclaw. Super fun. They get a bad reputation for being OP but if you play the actual missions it's fine. They're so fun to play
@2Tough6 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct that BCR can be built into a cheap army; as I noted, there are several factions that can do it. I chose SE because they are iconic, diverse and easily expandable as they ally with literally every order faction: an important thing if you are coming at this as a new player.

Splitting a Starterbox + Blood & Thunder starter box is +/- 70 euro's per person for 1200 SCE and 1000 KBB. But beware that you get the worst load out options (except on the liberators and blood warriors) and you CAN'T change them. But it's still the cheapest way to start a 1000 pts army.

I bought the two player starting box, the thunder and blood box and two of the 35 dollars start collecting stormcast and khorne bloodbound plus a 40k gaming mat to start playing AOS but god, painting 40 reavers is a pain. Its a supper cool way to start, I play with my family every time I can and its amazing, the only thing that I dont like is that Khorne has to many not great heroes, comparing them to the stormcast heros.

That's a great start! Glad to hear you game with your family :)

Love all your videos. Always fun and enjoyable. I've been reading the black library books on the realmgate wars on just got the the book by Josh Reynolds called the black rift. It seems like a huge battle, but it's hard to follow all the back stories and the reason for the book. I've read a lot of negative reviews about the book, but I think it's only because it's hard to follow. Can you do a video explaining the backstory and purpose for the black rift?
@2Tough5 жыл бұрын
I have yet to read that one, but I really want to! When i do, i'll make a video on it :)

What about the warriors of the great cities boxes? I know the tempest eye box save you alittle over $100 over buying them all individually.
@2Tough6 жыл бұрын
I always hesitate to mention them because I feel like they are going to suddenly vanish one day lol

Ah yeah that does seem a valid reason...probably after the next campaign book they'll be switched up

Personally, it looks like slaves of darkness + chaos warriors and I make the warriors and a few of the collecting box then we play a casual low point round.

With a AOS army From FW (tamurkhans Horde). You have a cheap army becouse you dont need hat much models to make a massively tough Nurgle army. ok it might not be cheepest. BUT they make up for that in awesomeness and battle toughness! Plus When Doug Throw Down Tamukhan and Horde Army lore one of theese days, you will have the most epic army both in lore and in streangth!! So Dough u see ? - more players need a Full on in depth story on the Mighty Dragon Toad army and the Epic followers of the Maggot Lord!

Yep, Stormcast and Khorne are the cheapest armies to put together, and they play great! I started with them and love them, well over 2000 points on both armies right now.

Nice vid first off. Second I highly recommend the skirmish boxes if you are wanting to play a faction that has one. It is a great way to learn to play and gives you a second option if you don't want to go big army.

I have a lore question about Stormcast. I writing a history about my own Stormhost, they help saving a city against a chaos attack and the city's peoples celebrate it that same night. Do Stormcast celebrate their victories outside Azyr? could be "in lore" that my Stormhost participates or they should keep themselves out of the party even when Sigmar didn't give them any mission other that "save that city"?
@NMahon6 жыл бұрын
I don't see the stormcast as being big into partys. From what I've read of the lore they seem pretty aloof and distant from the people, they're really not much fun lol
@nightlock8264 жыл бұрын
Cheapest with the most points is rebuying Maggotkin of Nurgle (mortals) you can get 2000 easy. Now would it be any good? Ehhh no

Also look for cross-over models. like Tzaangors. just as good in AoS as in 40k. all demons cross over.

Slaves to Tankness is pretty affordable if you just stick to the absolute Tank version.
