A couple suggestions here. Get the cabinets off the carpet by using 2x4s to make a base. Use the melamine for facing. The back is very underbuilt. Should be at least 1/4" or 3/8" ply. Put in screws every 12". I recommend splitting it up into 2 halves in case you want to move it. The bottoms of each sled should be 3/4" poplar. Mdf is not designed to take weight on the horizontal.

This is great. I am planning to do a 3 across and 4 high. Like you mentioned, easy to move around. My only improvement would be i would put in a few grove cuts on the inside so you can slide thin boards down to help comics from sliding when the box isn't full. What do you think?

Great idea. Just like a long box that is not full, you need to support the books from behind somehow. You can also do that for the front of each drawer, depending on how you want the front to look

Can you please explain your reasoning behind making the drawers only 23 or 24 inches deep? A normal long box is about 27.5 inches deep. I am going to do this but I am using the current number of long boxes I have to determine how many drawers I need. Thanks in advance and great job!

Thanks. Can't remember for sure why I did them 2 feet deep. I know I was concerned about the weight on the side rails when the drawer was pulled out all the way. And maybe that is the size the material came in i.e. 2 foot, 4 foot etc.

They held up fine, no problems at all. Wish I did use the other style rail so I could pull the drawer out all the way.

Now, after 50 years of collecting, I'm ready to build something durable yet easy to transport. I see myself moving one more time before I retire. Good build. Slightly over built. Point of improvement I would do is build this like a cabinet(beefed up cabinet). Give it a good solid base to sit on. Some cross supports in the back then covered the back with a lighter/thinner material to reduce weight as well as cost. Love the drawer slides. Are they heavy enough to hold the weight of a fully loaded shelf? Other then that great job.

+CommanderCool76 Actually the drawer slides is one of the few things I would change. The ones I used do not extend all the way out. They will hold the weight of a full box. I would use the slides that mount on the side or bottom( I would put them on the sides). They are more expensive but are made with ball bearings, slide real easy and would allow the drawer to pull all the way out

Also you did not mention what or where you got the board for the back of the drawer and the plastic for the front of the drawers....Where they both purchased and cut at home depot as well?? Hi Jeff. I used drywall screws. I bought everything at Home Depot. Make sure the plastic is thick enough that it won't bend, mine is a little too thin. Also, you may want to not make it as long as mine cause it is too big to move, I will have to take it apart if I want to move it to another room

Thanks for the helpful vid. I do alot of custom shelves for my dvds video game and everything. This was my next project I just couldnt figure out what I wanted to do with the front and how to get the drawers to work. Mines probably gonna only be 4 wide though. Im also sketching up an Idea for my retro video games. I was just think and I might need more cabinets haha I might do a 2 wide 1 as well in another spot.

How did you finish off the drawers (i.e., the plexiglass and the white trim)?

+thx 5280 For the drawers I painted the top and side edges white. Just thought it looked better that way. The plexiglass was kind of a pain. I used 1/8 inch but I recommend using something a little thicker. I cut mine using a razor blade but it was hard to get a real straight line and sometimes when you bend it to snap it, it splits cockeyed. I would have it cut at the store if they offer that service.

+TheSpaceBaby Hi !!! Great to hear from you. First off, the plexi I used was too thin. I think it was 1/8? Make sure it is thick enough so that you can't bend it. Also it was tough to cut. I scored it and then bent it to snap it and sometimes it splintered. Try to find a place that will cut it for you. It is easy ti drill thru

maybe shoulda just done em 2 or 3 drawers wide "dressers". moving that thing will be impossible without disassembly. sure there would be the two outsides "doubling" the space between but i dont feel that would be too much of a detriment to its aesthetics, especially if you have like 4 next to one another. the pattern will repeat and feel fine.

How many comics roughly does each drawer hold?

I have nothing to do with Cougarcomics. I just did a rough est of my half boxes. With some space it's like 95-105 bagged/boarded comics. His 23" drawers should roughly be a half box & half of a second half box. With some space in front to be able to flip through them to look for certain issues. So My guess is one drawer fits about 150 bagged and boarded comics. A half box is like 14" long, add 9 more inches. To make it 23". I hope this helps anyone interested.

The "wood" is called MDF, medium density fiberboard. All the measurements are in this video.

+Robert Storms Sorry, no. I cut the plastic to size, predrilled holes in the plastic and the front of the drawers and screwed them on.

You score it with a blade/knife and snap it. This was the hardest part of the whole thing. It doesn't always split cleanly.Try to find a store that will cut it to size for you, I wish I did!

@@raymondcurtis6093 22 should work, mine may have been 22. Very important to make sure the bottom of each drawer is perfectly cut square and the same dimensions or they will bind when you push them in and out . Sides of drawers are not that important. Take your time, it took me a few months

What kind of sliders did you get? The 24 inch ones I saw at Home Depot were almpst $20 each so the price on those alone for 28 drawers is over $500. Are there cheaper ones out there?

Yep. The ones you mentioned attach to the side of the drawer and the side wall of the cabinet and allow the drawer to extend all the way out. They are better than the one i used but like you said, very expensive when you do the math. The one i got attach to the bottom corner of the drawer. They were like $7-8 each and I did get them from Home depot. They were in the same aisle. Good luck

I found a service that cuts plexiglass to size and i might spring the extra money for that. Plexiglass is expensive and I'm not confident in cutting it myself.

Thats the way to go. They are very hard to cut. Mine were a lot of trouble. Make sure it is thick enough so you can't bend it.

If you mean the sides of the cabinet, I bought a piece that was 4 feet x 8 feet. It should have measured 48 inches x 96 inches but was actually 49 inches x 97 inches. That one extra inch, from 48 to 49, allowed me to make it four drawers high.

Wow! And I thought I made the ultimate custom comic shelving unit! (You can see it in my video). But this is unbelievable! I wish i would have used rollers like that. It was the first thing I ever really put together myself, so mine was a little off centered and not "flush" on all the corners, so I don't know how well I would have done if i would have used rollers. But this is awesome!

The Guy on the saw at our Home depot copped an attitude ..He said" this is not a wood shop" and when I said "I"m building a comic book cabinet" he replied " No, I'm building a comic book cabinet! And mine was just a simple design that you slide the long boxes into. But he did make the cuts.

This is a huge waste of money storage wise. Building drawers... Just build a rack that allows one acid-free comic box per hole. That's functionally even better than this. You should be able to whip any box out at once, without the extra weight of wood drawers.

+Don White The reason I built this is that I was tired of messing with the weight of a long box. I had my long boxes on shelves, but you either pull them out and put them on the floor or do a balancing act with the box. Now I can search for any book without lifting. The weight of the drawer never comes into play

My only argument then, would be it's not always comfortable to work at the height the furniture dictates. I also noticed this is yet another homemade comic drawer with clear fronts. Solid fronts should be used to stop the light.
