Building the Coronation of Guilliman - Warhammer 40k Diorama

How hard is it to build a diorama like this? SUPER HARD. Fortunately, I've gone through the pain so you don't have to, hopefully, all the problems and nightmare headaches it gave me will help you to build bigger!
The Coronation of Guilliman is an iconic artwork by Pedro Nunez. Like a chump, I decided to try and build it from Warhammer kits, 3d prints, bits of wire, and other junk I had lying around.
I've finished building it, and am now attempting to paint it, as close to the original artwork as possible. Here is a breakdown of how I built it, it's one of the biggest kitbashes I've made so far, and the one I'm most proud of - if you have any questions about the build, please don't hesitate to ask!

Thanks mate, that's the plan 😂 once I've done Guilliman I have a trazyn build I've been getting bits for. He'll be sitting on a throne (love thrones) throwing out tesseract cubes which will be expanding into different units from different eras - some lizardmen, some MK1 space marines, some Tyranids, in a mix of scales so it looks like they are expanding. Next year I have plans for a hanging subterranean city build out of the top of a 4 poster bed, the agents of the throne description of the Golden Throne, an Ordinatus gaming table and some others !

Boy am I glad I found this, this is mind blowing. When I came back to the hobby I was taken aback by how much more accessible everything seemed, with the advent of KZbin and 3d printing, and how permeated it was by the general encouragement to break away from the GW mold (pun intended) when it comes to kitbashing and painting, despite - or perhaps in response to - their increasing affinity towards monopose models... And this takes the cake when it comes to inspiring builds, just absolutely freeballing the hell out of doing whatever you damn well please in this hobby, if you only have the drive and vision for something, I applaud you, sir. The converted Space Marines alone would be worth their own video, they look rad as hell. My favorite part though, even if you changed it in the end (with good reason), were probably the Emperor's gangly little feetsies dangling over the vast cathedral chasm. It just kinda felt like a detail with a certain veracity, like something you might actually spot in a centuries old church if you let your eye wander along the ceiling, just some withered saint cropping out of the stucco, posing for his WikiFeet entry. Also the Discworld nod is just icing on the spikey, gilded, grimdark cake. Also, fix Cypher's sword hilt plz.

Lawrence, I just stumbled upon this video, and I am very impressed by your work. It was great to hear how you powered through the hurdles and challenges and ended up creating such an artistic piece. I recognized some of the same uncertainties that I struggle with when designing, building and painting. I have not worked with or played any of the Warhammer 40k sets or games. But I have been painting 28-32-54mm fantasy figures and building and designing original "game boards/dioramas". Nothing so far as detailed as yours though, so far. And strangely enough, my newest design is an Elven throne room with guard statues; flaming braziers; poplar wood carved columns of ivy, dragon head, stag head, owl and tree; raised golden dais with etched mapping; large stained glass (painted clear plastic) windows; working doors; throne chairs with ivy and moss; large dragon skull above thrones; a dragon egg in wood crate, etc. I definitely share your love for being creative. Amazing work, when I saw your photo of the work in progress paint job I originally thought it would be good to add more light but after watching the build video I do agree a strong light from the top is the better way to go and leave the viewer to imagine the detail that lies in shadow.

Cheers pal, Ives very intentionally overdone to a massive degree but once the base coats are on it settles down, paint job going to be reasonably subtle ! See how it goes. Happy new year !
