This is my first experience with your channel, and I’m dazzled! Excellent project with zero workshop - the table saw being the shop! I’d love to see where your woodworking & maker journey has taken you, but I see that your most recent post was 5 years ago. Best wishes wherever you are, and whatever you’re doing!

Your design is excellent, I’ve been a cabinet maker for over 50 years, so I’ve made a few tool boxes in my time. The only change I would make is to cut three 1/4” dados around the interior of large box before assembly, one 1/2” up from the bottom to support the lower boxes bottom, second one where you plan to cut the two boxes apart to later become a half lap joint with the bottom box to keep them aligned and the third 1/2” higher than the bottom of the upper box to support the upper boxes bottom. This would give each box superior strength and alignment and keep them perfectly aligned.

My son is a general contractor and with some minor changes, I made this box for him and it came out great. Trouble is, he doesn't want to take it to work for fear it will get messed up! I think I'll make a box for myself. Thank you. Take care, Kevin/Boston

Just what I was thinking. I have a little jobsite tablesaw that I need to dig out and get using again. I liked the old wood platform rolling cart you're using for a bench. And are you working in a warehouse? I get bummed out and make excuses to not make projects happen because I don't have a garage or a shop currently, and then I see people doing way more with way less, and it gets me smacked back into shape a bit. Excellent video.

Nice box, customers love to see traditional tool boxes. I built mine over 25 years ago and I always get comments. The great thing about a wooden box is, you can adapt it as you go. Really good job.

Good idea! I immediately started thinking of ways to nest the boxes. For instance, if you cut a rabbet in the inside edge of the base of the upper box and the top of the lower box to receive a slightly oversized bottom to the top box...
@lukereed3415
@lukereed3415 8 жыл бұрын
+seeker0075 Nice, I had considered the nesting idea also. I thought that getting an exact fit would be difficult, so I opted for the cutting-a-large-box-into-two-smaller-boxes method. Thank you.

You have the end pieces turned so the grain is vertical. That is good for attaching the handle, but it makes for weak fingers on the finger joint.
@lukereed3415
@lukereed3415 8 жыл бұрын
+deezynar Nice catch. I didn't even consider grain orientation, I hope the movement of the wood doesn't cause this to become a problem.
@deezynar
@deezynar 8 жыл бұрын
+Luke R. I don't think wood movement will be a problem. But if something strikes the top of the end near where the handle attaches, it could possibly shear off one of the fingers. You aren't the Lone Ranger on this, there are a couple of other videos on YT showing tool boxes made just like this. If it ever breaks, and you want to make a replacement box, you have a few options. You can use plywood. Or you can run all the boards horizontally, then use separate boards, run vertically, to connect the handle. The last method is what I do. You can use fancy joinery to attach the verticals, like a single lapped dovetail, or just bang in a few nails.

A welcome change from the prats who start their video with, “We are going to make a simple basic box, with some cherry wood, white oak, and elm, 'that I just happen to have' laying around the shop” “We will use some basic hand tools, that are all antiques and have taken me 40 years to assemble.” “And of course the 'Joe Soap' £50,000 (crap) CNC that every modern shop must have.” ---------------------- I saw myself in your video Luke, measuring 47 times and still cutting it wrong.....
