Hi, my great grandpa helped to build the dam. Unfortunately he and a couple other men fell off a scaffolding and were killed, as safety was a bit of an afterthought back then. My father was 6 when he lost his dad. He and his two bothers and mother had to move in with relatives to try to survive during the Great Depression. My dad tried to tell me the stories of their survival but it was too painful to listen too and I would stop him. I hated to hear about how he suffered. I do wish I would have let him tell me. It was just so painful to hear how awful his childhood was, especially how scarce food was. It just breaks my heart.

I remember visiting the Dam on my Honeymoon we flew over it first in a helicopter and it looked "small" mind you the Grand Canyon is massive only did we realize how big the Hoover was till we drove to it and realized the sheer enormity of it from ground level; the round cylindrical buildings are over 20 stories ABOVE water level! Also, the tour is amazing and one to definitely add to the bucket list if you ever find yourself in Vegas or in Colorado. One interesting fact mentioned on the tour is that this was not the initial location for the Dam but finances dictated it be located here...
@devinheida86946 жыл бұрын
Joe Lyons where was the original plan?
@joelyons8866 жыл бұрын
Hey Devin Heida “Hoover Dam” or “Boulder Dam” was originally named Boulder Dam. That’s because the initially planned site was at Boulder Canyon about 10 miles north upriver from where it is now located at Black Canyon. An engineering reassessment moved the location from Boulder Canyon to its present location. Apparently, finance and communication network (roads etc) meant the cost was too prohibitive even though it was way more suited to that location...

They had redone the visitor center and the tour was amazing. Huge inside, a literal cathedral to turbines, everything was so clean one could "eat off" the floor. We even went down to the bottom on the river exiting side to see the water gush out. Quite a roar of water.

The reason this is such a famous US infrastructure project is because the US has stopped investing in projects benefiting the people.
@Sovereign_Citizen_LEO6 жыл бұрын
That's not really even true. It's just that our nation and infrastructure needs are already long since built. What makes this one of the most famous infrastructure projects is because it was a world first (first of it's kind), and is still unique in the world (even though there are much larger dams now). The U.S. still builds all kinds of infrastructure projects benefiting the people, but most are just not as large scale. Meanwhile in countries like China, they are building the projects they need (and have not yet built), to support their national transition/industrial revolution/growing urban areas. There is close to a $Trillion dollars in roadway/freeway/bridges, light rail, subway, high speed rail, airport terminals, and other infrastructure projects either under construction, or in the planning phases in the United States right now.

After the concrete was placed the chemical reactions of the curing concrete produced heat which caused the temperature of the concrete to increase. River water was then pumped through the cooling pipes embedded in the concrete to carry away the heat. As the temperature of the concrete decreased to the point where the temperature difference between the concrete and the river water was insufficient to extract the heat as quickly as desired the cooling system was switched to use artificial refrigeration to increase the temperature difference and speed the heat extraction process. Using this 2 stage process saved a lot of cost by allowing a smaller refrigeration plant to be used as a large proportion of the heat was removed by the river water. You are correct that ammonia was used as a refrigerant. Interestingly, the compressors used in the refrigeration plant were originally used to create the massive quantities of compressed air used in the early stages of the project when blasting the diversion tunnels and scaling the walls of the canyon. The electric drive motors and compressor bodies were re-used but different cylinder heads were installed to convert the compressors for use with ammonia.

@@Vincent_Sullivan Now that's said, it does make practical sense. Use river water while heat transfer is more gradient, then the ammonia to cure. And that would require smaller workings of said method.

I'm always amazed at photos of the upstream side of the dam, possibably because noboby has seen it for some time.

Why isn't anyone talking about free soup?

What do you mean? Free soup was common in the depression.

No one really starved during the depression. One of the first times in history - most economic collapses in prior centuries (including 19th) were due to famine, and if not, it was something that affected only the rich.
