Hello my fellow beekeeper. My name is Brad. I'm returning to beekeeping next year with a single rooftop hive and want to modify my frames and boxes to mimic Layen Frames. I'm looking for a wood shop guy to hire, to make for me TEN (19" wide and 15.5" long Layen frames) to fit in a modified Langstroth box. I found cutting the rebates and frame sides on the bandsaw much easier and less mess than the router. I like your idea of drilling the end of the frame rebates as it woud give consistency across all frames. I have only made two so far as I moved my bees from a langstroth nuc/trap as spring is coming and they needed more space. So n ow they have two layens frames with dowe and the rest langstroth that they have built on. Getting them onto the layens frames will be tricky moving the brood I expect.

I've found moving moving frames in Layens hives to be tricky on first year comb period because of the long span.

I tried to make my first Layens hive frames this year. Due to limited shop space I use my table saw and circular saw only.. I agree that the frame jig is well worth the time. I build 14 frames and then had to build the jig to rework five frames that were twisted, warped and out of square. I also used a Dado on my bench saw for the rabbets in the top bar. For the side pieces I do a partial 1/4" rip on each side with a piece of 2x4 as a push block. I cut a step 3 3/4" long and 3/8" deep. Then just rip the blank up until the saw blade almost touches the front of the push block. I built a crosscut jig with a 3 3/4" stop block to cut the 1/4" strips off when the side pieces are set on their side(s). I set the table saw blade tilt at a 45 degree angle and the depth to cut at the right spot each time. Any trimmings can be done with an utility knife. If there is going to be any equipment additions a sliding miter saw to crosscut the 8 foot dimensional lumber would be great.

Bee Boy Bill has a very good jig for making the sides on a table saw. I used that after doing a few on my router table. I didn't like the router as I got too much large tear out with the wood I was using but the table saw seemed better for that. Check it out. (And it was faster than the router also)
