I am very excited for our future. The polarization in society is very tangible. Most people I cross paths with are either very upset or very upbeat. It's crazy how quickly things are changing behind the scenes.

Great conversation with Ellie. We really are heading towards the unknown.

I really like this conversation. I too have noticed a change in sentiment. Weirdly I’ve noticed that some have gone all in on cynicism - and those folks are drawing more inward etc. but the majority of people seem to be just like, “yup it’s fucked, ok let’s move on.” To me that’s really hopeful because maybe we’ll stop being shocked about all this stuff and start fixing it. The regenerative agriculture stuff was a very solid parallel to draw.

Some people are very not happy with my tone shift on my main channel... but yeah I'm done perseverating on catastrophic thinking. We all know what the PROBLEM is and some people just want to wallow.
@ppragman
@ppragman 5 ай бұрын
I mean, I get it. Wallowing has its place… but talk is so cheap, we need to “do” now more than ever, but, that’s hard. For me, I’m actually really glad I found this channel. I don’t *always* agree with everything, but as an AI researcher applying some of these techniques to practical problems I find the continuous doom and gloom elsewhere really annoying. People without the foggiest understanding of what matrix multiplication is are selling us a terminator future based on their preconceived notions from media. Meanwhile I’m just sitting here wishing I lived in the “culture” and trying to figure out how to get there.

also, the tone shift is fine, it’s welcome tbh. I only started checking out this channel a couple months ago, but I think it’s the first positive AI stuff I’ve seen that wasn’t mostly hype or scammy bullshit, so, keep up the good work

When AGI arrives and machines take over all of the work, what do we humans do? We play. Without work there is no reason to grow up and adult, so we can just be kids forever. Games, games, and more games.

I love the idea, but im skeptical of the of the potential: so i have chosen a lifestyle based on my values. I live in the woods in a permaculture egalitarian community where i built my home, school my kids and grow my food, and yet ive met very few people actually want to join this life even though they say its idealic. Ultimately, people have a strong need to confirm, and this is not the image of success or normalcy they see on TV. We have to get a critical mass to make a change, but no one wants to go first.

I think really what we are seeing is the rise of the new, counter-culture. Every generation has one, or several. Flapper, mods, hippies, punks, slackers, and now... What is maybe different, is the metamodernism's focus and awareness of history, reality, and our physical limitations to cope. So, instead of just another counter-culture reaction, we maybe get a movement that actually carves out a path through the cognitive dissonance and can grapple with the myriad existential issues that face everyone. The part I find challenging, is what is that metamodern process? I mean, it should be that whatever meta narrative you tell your self has to always have one foot firmly in an empirical frame. You should always have in your mind an awareness that parts that you cannot fully explain or justify in an empirical fashion, or ascribe to reality. Like, pseudo-science or quasi-philosophical, metaphysical, bullshit. And you play with that grey zone to assuage the conga native dissonance between what we do know and what we don't know, or most especially, what we perhaps cannot know. From this, hopefully can find enough grounding to find meaning. The impetus that drives us through a reality that, just is, and not, is for. I am sure, I still am missing something in the application of metamodernsim. But, I hope it will gel into a more coherent model, some day. Assuming, the philosophy doesn't totally fall apart. That whole attractor (the, Secret) concept, is kind of an example of something that has some patch work empiricism that leaves it still firmly in the pseudo-science realm. But, taking a step back, you can see that priming your self to be successful in a particular goal can at the very least help, if even only partially, in reaching that goal. If you are totally closed to the possibly it of success, you are more likely to not see opportunities. This won't perfectly predict success or failure in achieving a goal. Having the goal in the first, place is sort of important. But, that is a digression. It reminds me of a claim that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs success was completely predictable based on their up bringing and early life experiences. I think whoever made this claim would have to be able to predict the next Steve Jobs to really add validity to such a claim, but it does explain some of how alignment of goals and success work. Jobs, was virtually a bum before his success, but he was from a middle class family in the heart of silicon valley, and the connection he forged and his personal drives lead to the creation of Apple. If he had been totally closed to the possibility, he could have let the opportunities slip by. The counter of course, is those whose destinies are being dictated by agents known or unknown to them. Obvious examples would be, royals. But, success is being defined narrowly here. The point being, priming for a goal probably does help achieve it. Does just thinking about it manifest it into reality? More empirical data is needed. But, on a more subtle, but tangible level, having a mind set for success and being open to opportunities, likely improves your chances. If reaching this mindset means adopting a meta narrative that is, partially pseudo-scientific bullshit, and you are aware of it-then, more power to you.

I would posit that much of what actually drives social media preferences, on a subconscious level for the average person, is a balance of fear and addiction. A lot of our values come from trying to prevent loss, or create status, but our minds disguise those core drives as positive self-preserving mechanisms. I'm very interested in this question of how can we consciously choose to act from a place of open creativity to build the future, rather than operating from unconscious fear based drives.
