According to Insta360, the minimum focus distance is 40cm, or about 1.3 feet, not “5 or 6 feet away.”

Their 40 cm minimum focus distance *is not accurate* and this camera does not come into full focus until in the 70 cm range or about 2.3 feet away. This has been the chief complaint on the Ace Pro for those that want to use it for vlogging and what the diopter attachment in this video seeks to fix. I wish their published minimum focus distance was accurate, but it simply is not.

Luke Check out the Neewer 52mm Filter Adapter Ring for GoPro. It is bigger than the GoPro lens and I think would fit the Ace Pro with no sanding.

Nobody says to their audience that, to record on a camera / action camera 8K video you need to have a device supporting the 8K playback 😉 Thats a litte advice for people who dont know how things works

Great video! This helped me a ton. I’ve built a similar rig and just ordered a custom 3D printed adapter for the 2X lens. For the external mic, I found the wind muff shows up in shots so I have to keep it off as shown in your vid.

Have the camera and way to resolve the face focus issue for me is to switch sharpness to low, the (lowest setting). Film in any format that disables HDR and then add sharpening in your editing software. I use Davinci Resolve and doing this my face is far more in focus and sharper with all my wrinkles, etc back on show :) Still not as good as my Osmo Action 4 but seems a good bit better.

My current webcam output granny video feed when the lights are off for the LCD projector. The further point of focus is not an issue when recording the whole group.

It's not quite 5 feet, but it isn't their published spec of 40 cm either. It's more like 70 cm, or 2.3 ft. away which is just farther than you would typically hold the camera at arms length and is contributing to the soft focus issues associated with vlogging. The issue is the result of a fixed focus at infinity (like all action cams) paired with a larger sensor (good for low light, bad for minimum focal length) paired with a wide aperture (again good for low light, bad for minimum focal length.) The Action 4 uses a smaller aperture and so has a bit better minimum focal distance and the GoPro uses a significantly smaller sensor so focuses very well at vlogging distance. The issue of course is those choices by DJI and GoPro reduce low light performance. You can't have your cake and eat it too unless they put in a focusing system (like the DJI Pocket 3 has) but an autofocus system tends to badly underperform for the major purpose of the camera, fast action... I think people would be furious if a focus system was hunting for the subject while skiing, biking etc... these cameras are trying to have *everything* in focus all the time but its a struggle with the demands of infinity focus vs. vlogging.
