I was so moved by this video and realized how you are doing so much to spread the world of organs and organ music to all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this… and indeed ALL of your videos you have shared.

It would be lovely to see Olivier Latry perform on the organ. Some other suggestions: Fraser Gartshore, Jonathan Scott (from Scott Brothers Duo), Diane Bish, Maria Magdelana Kacsor. The sound from the organ is AMAZING.

You ask who we'd like to see play the organ, well Richard, you of course. Like I have said, you are a fantastic organist, and there are many AGO chapters that would enjoy having you presented in recital on some of their notable instruments. As to some of the others? You mentioned Olivier Latry. Absolutely. Also, due to the situation currently at Notre Dame Cathedral, he might not be quite as busy -- glad the Cavaille-Coll was saved. Another would be Daniel Roth, one of his improvisations would sound great on it. Jonathan Scott, absolutely. What a talent. Your Hauptwerk looks grand and beautiful, and sounds wonderful with beautiful colors. What a thrill it must be to own such a magnificent "practice organ." Thanks for sharing; for sharing your talent, insights, and love of the organ and it's literature.

We have a lot to thanks the electronic industry for in producing these instruments. I'm 83 and when I first started to play the organ there was only the local church and practice time was at a premium. the the Allen computer organ was just coming on stream way back then and it cost an arm and a leg to buy one. One has to marvel at how a would be beginner organist managed before the advent of electronic organs and even organs that were powered by electric blowers !! The organ as an instrument is surely becoming main stream rather than the inaccessible instrument that is was years ago.

Beautiful instrument! I have a 4-manual Hauptwerk which is driving me crazy. They didn't tell me when I bought it that I needed to have a doctorate degree in computer science! Fortunately the quality of the music played on an organ is not a 100% bound to the abilities of the organ console. So your YT channel and your renditions must not hide behind the music we have heard and will hear on Richards new console, Philip. I love this new Organ. It's one part space shuttle (so many stops!) and one part cathedral worthy wood grain. I love that you basically have a very realistic cathedral-like sound in your own home. Any chance you know anyone who can help Sam from Look Mom No Computer get his new museum organ working and intonated in its new home at his new museum? It was rescued from someone who is selling a house in England that had a pipe organ (the actual pneumatic classic kind) installed in their house which he has carefully disassembled and carried back to his museum and is setting back up.

Re the cost! I reckon u are not far out. Wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't more! Renatus built the console and they are not cheap. Did they supply the keyboards not sure ? This is a Organist's dream ! However one must be realistic and practical. As a large instrument is fairly expensive as well as accomdating it preferably in a room that is soundproof. I think what would also be good is to perhaps have a play on hands sessions for Organist's interested in seeing and hearing what it feels like overall. He or she could make a small donation towards the funding of your channel Richard. I like the idea of guest organists but two of the greatest organists I know are sadly in a care home and no longer able to play. Nathan Laube is probably one of the finest younger concert Organists on the scene now. He opened the refurbished Organs at Kings College Cambridge & Canterbury Cathedral . Be great to give him a phone call or e mail in the future.

Seconded! IMHO Nathan Laude is the most complete, musical concert organist before the public today...and a thoroughly nice fellow. His repertoire is very large with many superb off-the-beaten track major works in addition to the more usual fayre. I think he is currently based in Stuttgart and has a position at the Royal Conservatoire in Birmingham...so England is not unknown to him.

Definitely one of the best Hauptwerk consoles I have seen. The St. Sulpice replica console also looks incredible and somewhere else I saw another console replica of a cathedral organ. In terms of audio, which may be subjective, there are many instruments using large numbers of channels and/or high end audio, many in large spaces, so it is hard to say what the "best" Hauptwerk organ is. Without a doubt though this instrument is incredible and will bring a lot of positive attention to what is possible with Hauptwerk. Well done!

Thanks John. I can say with all certainty that Renatus Ltd have created 'one' of the best Hauptwerk organs and it was far surpassed my own expectations. Hopefully my viewers may realise that a lot of what I say is tongue-in-cheek, but this organ isn't made to just 'look' like a good organ - it's using all of the best in the business parts (solenoids & stop heads, keyboards, swell pedals, wood, music desk etc). The organ is equally impressive under the skin as it is at face value. I'd love to see more of the Saint-Sulpice replica, and maybe its owner will invite me over one day to play it.

I wish you many years enjoying your new console, and what it will allow you to do. The only Hauptwerk console cost that concerns me is the one I plan to have made. Unless someone is contributing direct financial funding for my console, they don't have any business knowing the cost. IMO. :) At present, I have a makeshift "portable" 4-manual console with 25-note pedals, cobbled together from various and sundry items; it works and allows me to explore and learn Hauptwerk however, it is far from ideal.

In pushing the idea of what's possible, you missed out on quite a lot by focusing solely on one thing, that being having a digital "cathedral" organ in your house, which is fair enough if classical organ repertoire is your main focus, but the organ has been, can be and is so much much more than that.
@beautyinsound
@beautyinsound 2 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, but I think for the purposes I require of it (classical), I think it is quite innovative. I don't pretend to know anything about theatre organs (I wish I did!), and I wonder if someone could play this organ in a 'theatre' way? Thanks for your comment, I completely agree with what you're saying 😊
@OrganMusicYT
@OrganMusicYT 2 жыл бұрын
@@beautyinsound The interchangeable stopheads are innovative, yes. I have also wondered for some time now about having reversable stop tabs which would pull forward to unlock, then flip over 180 degrees to have a different specification on the reverse side, and they would slide back to lock into normal position. As for the playing of popular music on the console you have, yes it is doable. You have all the keys. Is the console useable as a complete theatre organ? It depends on your level of playing as a theatre organist. Top flight will miss 2nd touch on the lower 2 manuals and pedal. I think if you wanted to go for a 'jack of all trades' instrument then you have to start looking at instruments like Sanfillipo, Southhampton Guildhall, Wolverhampton Civic, Radio City Music Hall, Organ Stop Pizza, even the Wanamaker organ etc and coming to a conclusion from those specifications and classical specifications. Even the former Atlantic City High School organ (Adrian Phillips organ) is well worth looking at specification wise. Those instruments above have proven that bridging between the two main sides of the instrument is acheivable, and some of those listed are almost 100 years old.

They’ll be fixed in due course. They’re actually very small niggles in relation to the size of the instrument and all the components which make it up.

What an entertaining video with a lot of interesting information about the new console. If time is scarce you have to face compromises even on the last meter of the race for quality. But I strongly believe everything will come to a good end when there is time for that. Keep in mind that this console is completely custom made and contains some first time technology.

You could possibly ask Renatus as a possible ‘play-in’ period about either shaving a bit off the piston key-slips, or, re-fitting with a heavier gauge thumper rail, or fitting (very slightly) thicker front rail key felts to absorb an enthusiastic organist/pianist……sorry! I’ll go off now and wash my mouth out with carbolic soap! Just out of curiosity, what’s the longevity of interchangeable drawstop knobs as I had a really fine digital organ supplied to a church I played in and one, maybe two had to be exchanged due to faulty magnets.

Wonderful... I just cheat and have a 61-key Yamaha keyboard that I stack another Yamaha 49-key keyboard on top of to have two manuals. A little monkeying with instrument selection and it works for Harpsichord, and 2-manual playing. I still want another 88-key weighted action digital keyboard. When we downsized15 -years ago, my parents' Hammond 2-manual and pedal-rank organ and the baby grand were donated to the Westminster Choir College.

Richard - did you consider commissioning Renatus to develop a new kind of stop head with a small, transparent LED display embedded in it? That way you could forgo the detachable stop heads and have hauptwerk dynamically update the stops with the relevant name and pitch. I think that would be cool, albeit super-expensive! Of course these would all have to draw power and also have a comms connection. An interesting technological challenge!
@beautyinsound
@beautyinsound 2 жыл бұрын
Thought about that - but it wasn’t authentic enough. I didn’t want to be able to see anything on the console anywhere that wasn’t ‘real’ if you know what I mean. The organ console looks and works entirely like a real H&H organ. The only screens I have are the small LCD screens on the left, and a touchscreen monitor in a draw which controls Hauptwerk. Going for physical stops like this was very much a conscious decision.

As I consider your mechanical style “pull stops” my thought is to use little OLED screens on the heads(digital watch faces) to automate organ change. This way all the stop heads could be changed electronically. I think this makes interesting things possible such as playing a piece on two different organs. You program the change starting on say a baroque organ then a French Romantic organ m. Also a display that could show different push piston assignments.(I need to think about this more.) The adjacent touch screen displays should be commercial aircraft grade! This way the are more likely to be less finicky. With all this little screens you have so many options. Now a horrible admission. I play jazz organ too, but only on a Hammond B3 like instrument(more like with a sequencer) Please don’t hate me! Back to the stop heads. With the screens you could create background color to differentiate functions, groupings and so on. Additional program add could be a peddle harpsichord. Possibly another console to accommodate it and things such as a clavier. Just some thoughts to go with integration into digital processor for all those 32 channels. 4-6 subwoofers in that system which could produce the experience of the very low pipes. If 6 two of the channels would be dedicated to extremely low pipes.

Console looks good Richard, still waiting on getting the electronics for mine to convert it to solid state. Guess the Allen will continue to serve for the time being before the old Moller gets put into action. TBH for how much you probably paid, I hope you got the builders to come and fix those technical problems as I think they deserve to be looked at. I have a similar idea to the whole invite the community onto the organ, but my vision is a bit grander and involves actually building pipes to have the old girl sing again, which probably wont happen for many years if it happens at all. Overall, the console is a hit I believe and as long as you are happy with it then it's a win. The American layout is still the best and you can't change my mind.
