I bet this project will be a great looking addition once the varnish is applied and dried! Great work as always John!

Glad to see I am not the only blacksmith working on kitchen cabinets this week. My brother and I Refaced my mothers kitchen cabinets and built new doors and drawer fronts. Finally updating them from the 70's style that they were built in in the 80's.

Nice, simple project. I think it's looking good.

Amateur woodworker... HAH!. Really a master craftsman in disguise. Very nice result. As Cypherian said, some blacksmithed decoration would look good, akin to Doc's hotshop and forge and his rice storage box project..

Hi John. I know you've forged drawknives and some other wood working tools. I was wondering if you have ever forged a set of woodcarving gouges and chisels? Perhaps a future blacksmith project, that you could then use for a wood working project for this channel? Thanks for your wonderful videos.

I have made some chisels and gouges. But not a full set of carving tools

I had a nice old Craftsman table saw that I sold for the same reason (lack of portability), then years later turned around and purchased a Kobalt table saw with folding support legs that can be wheeled around (like a hand truck or dolly). But before doing that, I built a nice table saw using my Dad's old worm drive saw mounted to the back of a couple of sections of melamine shelf material. It still works great. If you take the time to make certain you get the saw square with the table, you can also build an adjustable rip fence that uses the side of the table as a guide. Any decent portable circular saw will work, and if you reinforce the underside of the table, it can rest on sawhorses or any other support... Nice shelf project John, well executed. I built similar ones to keep the tones of old video cassettes and DVDs my wife purchased over the last 30 years.

If I had not known you were "out west" prior to watching the start of this video I would have known it the minute I saw the Douglas fir board. Here in Iowa fir is as scarce as hens teeth. When I started woodworking back in the middle 1960's nearly every piece of framing material was fir as was most one by boards. Now if we want to obtain it we must go to a hardwood supplier. Great looking project.

I would say amateur doesn't mean that you're not good at woodworking. I'm a big fan of using native wood for home projects. That makes your douglas fir shelves worthwhile in my opinion.

Those units look great and your bow-ties/butterflies are brilliant including the instructions!! Have a look at the superglue and masking tape trick, it will stick a bow-tie to the work piece securely enough to be able to score around the edges with knife and then it's easy enough to remove the bow-tie before chiselling the wood out to fit and glue the bow-tie. I think you might be under rating your carpentry skill a bit👍

Hi John on the end grain cuts you might try putting psinters tape on it before cutting. Just and idea

Your woodworking looks pretty darn good to me, John! Douglas fir is tough stuff, but looks really nice. It makes great construction lumber.

Hey John, for inlay - I took a couple of old small Allen keys and filed out pointed blades. I then harden them to use in my little router plane to get into those tight pointed spots. Also, I see you’re going to be at Handworks, hopefully all of this COVID stuff is better by then. Black Bear Forge and Camp Robber???
