BUILDING WITH CHAINSAWS - The Compost Loo Project Continues - OFF GRID

I've got a huge variety of things to share this week from life on my off grid homestead here in Central Portugal but the main focus has been continuing work on the outdoor compost toilet shelter. It's been a tricky project and working alone is slow, but my mighty chainsaw has come in handy and I'm making some progress!
Plus... it was my birthday yesterday and I've enjoyed spending time with friends. If anyone out there likes my content and wants to send a little gift for my birthday, here's a list of some fun and useful things that would be much appreciated! 😀

Here is a low impact but permanent solution for ants. Get a package of the small plastic ant baits that are sold in hardware or home stores. (Brand names like Raid, Hot Shot, STEM) Set the on the ground (use several - that is a big colony) right at the main entrance to the colony. STEM is formulated with botanicals. Cover with something like a wash basin or bucket that you can use as a secure cover. You do not animals or your cats to get to these traps. They are quite effective and their chemical footprint is miniscule. Monitor the entrance until you no longer see ant activity. They are attracted to the fig tree and have likely been there for years. So expect the traps will take some time. I think your round wood structure joints are perfect. I liked the block and clamp method of cinching the joint tight.

I got a couple of ant traps but I definitely need more. It's an invasion, though luckily they're not coming in the house anymore... I've added a line of cinnamon which seems to be working ok. 🙂

@@PortugalfromScratch It will take some time for the baits to work. After a week, you should begin to see fewer ants. You can peek inside the bait station to determine when all the bait has been carried away. With the ant traffic you had, they may empty a bait station quite quickly. I'm hoping the ant activity starts to slow soon - but give them access to bait stations until there is no activity. You can change the type of bait station too. Give them some variety :)

@@PortugalfromScratch Great! The baits may be why you are seeing ants in the house. The colony is starting to die and scouts are looking for an new home. That's not pleasant - but it's part of the process. I hope the traffic starts to decline soon. All the best!

Happy Birthday, Kirsty! The stone bed around the fig looks great. I think a bit of herbs planted in the bed would be convenient to your kitchen. Figs root easily, could you take some cuttings and start some more? For around the property or to sell or barter? An old window screen or two would make a good dryer, if hung up where the ants aren’t.

Window screens - exactly what I was thinking. There could be a thin wood framed box with a loose door (attach with hook and eye or just wire) covered all sides (but the door) with window screen. (yes-even the bottom) set the box up on legs so air flows in all directions. Make thin wooden racks covered in screen that slide into the box on wooden tracks. Put the feet in a small container filled 1/2 way with water as an "ant moat". You may have to add a few drops of dish detergent or vinegar to make the moat water repellant to ants.

Little Mountain Ranch, KZbin channel, in Canada, grows comfrey at the base of her trees in the garden. When they get tall she just steps on them to flatten them down and it makes the perfect mulch!

I would do comfrey tea to fix nitrogen for the fig, and plant Russian Sage, a beautiful perennial that will attract pollinators and is such a lovely purple color, and can stand some dry soil. And happy solar return!

Happy birthday Kirsty, why not create a mini fig tree guild in the garden bed - ground covers, flowers to attract pollinators and beneficial insects. Since fig trees need a good supply of potassium, maybe plants that accumulate potassium - purslane, chicory, oregano and yarrow.

A little tip for nitrogen fixers is lots of peas or clovers. They hold the moisture in really well and break up hard clay and silty soil. Another tip. Finely blend a cucumber add two shots of vodka and sieve into a spray bottle. Thoroughly mix then add two drops of fairy liquid then mix. Spray this around where ants or prolific. And a happy birthday Kirsty. Enjoy. X

You can safely get rid of ants with corn meal or grits. Just sprinkle it on the nest. It’s safe and it works.

I love what you've done around the fig as well. Companion planting enhances the growth and productivity of fig trees. Nitrogen-fixing plants improve soil fertility for fig trees. Certain herbs act as natural pest deterrents for fig trees. Intercropping with companion plants optimizes space utilization for fig trees. i.e. comfrey, mint marigold. Oh and happy birthday. Could I suggest that you enlarge the circle garden under the fig. If you want to plant comfrey, it will keep the soil cool?

Good progress with your loo...I love the fig tree and the new orange tree surrounds! A little tip for ants bothering you, I use a natural insect repellent and spray this on my shoes etc., it keeps them away, they attack and leave nasty bites if I don't. Have a Happy Birthday! ❤🎉

May this year ahead be filled with many successful accomplishments 🎂 Not sure if you’re interested in encouraging the ants to depart or not, but I have used powdered borax in the past. Do you have a chainsaw file and guide? It appears that you may need it. Love your determination.
