You describe the artist's journey so well, putting together in paint what the eye is seeing and the heart is feeling about what they see and it is revealing to the self.

Ian, this video was so helpful. I'm a fan of Ian Mc Gilchrist as well and it really helped me to bring his right/left brain understanding to starting a painting. Your words on how and when improvisation enters the process was brilliant. Thank you!

Thanks for the video, Ian. What I struggle with within this process, is to know how detailed my map or score needs to be, and how much this map defines the end goal. If the map or score is too restrictive, it can feel more like an exercise in painting by numbers and more left brain, which is not helpful to me. Too little guidance can lead to happy accidents once in a while and the process of discovery can be enjoyable, yet it is often frustrating as often no satisfactory end point is archieved. Finding the right balance in this is hard. Any ideas on how to find this balance would be appreciated.

I think for me the foundation of any painting is a few simple value masses. Big shapes on the canvas. From there you can add more or less detail, you can nuance color, there are lots of ways to enrich those first few simple shapes. But like big abstract chords of music that is what pulls the viewer to the image. Sketch those shapes as thumbnails before you begin to paint. That foundation if sound should allow you to explore using that foundation of shapes to build your painting on. I hope that helps. All the best and good luck.

So, I see what I want to draw, I begin, I look for the essential , and the more I look , the more I see the details, and I forget what was what I thought was essential, and it becomes increasingly complex and finally I am overcome by the miracle of complexity down to the molecules . That’s what happens.
@IanRobertsMasteringComposition2 ай бұрын
I mentioned the idea of right brain and left brain. Getting buried by more and more detail means you are looking at it more left brain. Additive. Try just doing sketch after sketch, simple shapes to try and nail down the essence. And when you are looking for something to paint look for big value masses first. That is the essence and that carries the painting. How much detail you add to that is up to you. But those few big value shapes are the foundatioin of the painting. I hope that helps. All the best.

There are a lot of ways to make a painting. For me this idea of a foundational idea before I start is key. But obviously not for everyone,. All the best.
