Well movie is on my top 5 to watch. And I have watched this movie over 5x. Why great story line, characters. Nice job done by actors..Was looking for a romantic ending between lead characters. I mean it was building up the whole movie. But maybe confused with mutual respect. I have never analyzed a movies like this before lol. Just enjoined this movie so much. Can't stop wondering about future of characters lol. Am I crazy??

They should have talked more about the people and the reservation. Their lives are hard not just because of the landscape but also because of companies and the government interfering and encroaching on their lands. Also, the realities that indigenous women face not just in Wyoming, or the US, but also in Canada, and Latin America is just despicable.

A great film! My favorite scenes? When she sees the mother cutting herself, she begins to know the sense of loss. When Bellingham opens the door and sees his friend, the way his face simply crumbles is heartbreaking. The script defines the injustice done to Native Americans, too. The shootout is nicely choreographed. A winner!

Excellent but tragic movie. Two things they didn't wrap up and left me hanging. The 3 lions. I thought he'd take the guy to the lions to let them finish him off, and then maybe take the lions someplace else so they'd stop eating the livestock, but apparently he just dispatched with them. Secondly, his wife. We didn't get to know her well enough and have any resolution or explanation as to why their own tragedy tore them apart with no resolution.

Perhaps she begrudged him for suggesting to head out of town to a motel for a romantic getaway and let their two kids stayed home, only to come back and find out the kids had a party and she was last seen leaving the house with some strangers. May not be the father's fault but the daughter could have been alive if the parents stayed home. And the fact is that 90% of marriages end shortly after the death of their child.

Agree with you on the wife. I thought the scene when she said she couldn't step back into the town they lived in (Pindedale?) felt cold from Cory. He just brushed it off and left and tbh that's probably why their relationship broke. They didn't deal with the loss of their daughter well enough and instead closed off from each other. Another unresolved part of the plot is how the entire police force on the reservation was killed off and it wasn't really addressed. That's what I would have loved to know more about.

I thought the way he had the guy die was much more satisfying than getting eaten by the lions. As far as the wife goes, I don’t think she was really that important to the plot so it wasn’t really necessary to develop her character. As far as no explanation to why they were driven apart we are shown that they dealt with/ are still dealing with their daughters death in different ways that probably conflicted emotionally. I like the open endedness of it all. It kind of makes us feel the same way that they do as far as having questions about what happened and simply not knowing. Overall this movie was criminally overlooked. I think it could have contended for best picture.

MsCaryopteris I agree with you completely. I also wondered why Mr. Sheridan included those things in film after editing out other scenes that focused on the storyline between Jane and Cory. I would have liked his background to have been more clearly portrayed thru the script. Renner's performance was outstanding. Nice to see him in films like this over the Marvel stuff. IMO my humble opinion. Respect to Mr. Sheridan who truly paid his dues before this. Recommending this to everyone I know. 👍 ty for all who posted their comments. Very nice to read others views on a film we all watched and enjoyed.

At some point, I understand their "dumb" questions. Most of them probably hadn't seen that movie before. I'm pretty sure, if they had, some of their questions would have become much deeper. After watching that movie, I feel endlessly sorry for the native Americans. I think what white people did to the natives was incredibly cruel. First they stole lands from the natives. Then they banned the natives to reservations where the natives have been surviving for hundreds of years. Note, I don't say, 'live'. I use the word 'survive' on purpose. And that's one of the biggest crimes ever committed in the American history. You might hate me for saying this but strictly speaking, all white people's ancestors were actually illegal immigrants.

It's really expensive to make movies in Wyoming. That's why they do the setting shots there (like town signs, etc.) then film in places like Utah. Longmire does the same thing. Plus Wyoming weather is nasty. It makes it tough to schedule.

This is a magnificent movie with what may be some of the best acting I've ever seen. But actors are not political scientists nor are they sociologists; and what this interviewer and these actors are saying about the US relationship with Native Americans, they're not qualified to say. Self-loathing is very popular in the US these days. But a sense of shame does not elucidate truth, research and education does.

My undergrad is in sociology and I also worked with several professors renowned for their work on the Pine Ridge (SD) reservation, and have written several books on Pine Ridge as well as Native Americans living today that many experts in the fields of social work and sociology use as reference as well as undergrad and graduate school textbooks. So I may not be an “expert,” but I learned from them and read their books, my graduate degree is in library science and I have done continuing research on the topic, and one of my best friends from college grew up on Pine Ridge so I feel confident in my knowledge to speak to this. What these actors, the screenwriter, and interviewer are saying is true. What the movie showed was accurate. It is not self-loathing because that happens to be popular, it’s well placed shame based on YEARS of actions by our government and complacency by the non-native population to allow it to continue unabated. Maybe I’m more prone to guilt due to the sociological and psychological effects of living in a Jewish and Catholic household, but anyone who knows absolutely anything about Native American Tribes should feel guilty about what some of our ancestors did to theirs and what our country did and continues to do to them every day. If a person doesn’t feel any guilt after knowing even part of the truth, I’d worry about their humanity. It’s impossible for tribes to prosecute non-tribal members for crimes that happen on the Res, the reservations are federal land so the FBI does have jurisdiction, and the federal government gives out contracts to private companies to work on and sometimes change the face of the reservations themselves, like building damns. You bring in non-tribal federal contract workers to a place where they can basically do whatever the heck they want without repercussions and it’s no wonder there is an epidemic of young native women who go missing, are assaulted, and/or murdered every year. Their own tribal police is woefully understaffed and underfunded. Outside state and private agencies attempt to assist sometimes, but it can take a lifetime for a white person to gain some semblance of trust - but they will never be a tribal member so they are kept at arms length. White people have a checkered history of “helping” native peoples and tribes still have very current memories of their children being removed from the reservations to be put into “re-education” boarding facilities where they were given white names and beaten if they spoke their native language. The scene at the end of the movie when the native father had painted a “death face” on but had to guess because there was no one left to teach him is true. So many tribes have lost their cultures, languages, and peoples it’s freaking heartbreaking. Life on reservations is difficult to say the least. They are so remote and jobs (unless they’re federal contractors who don’t hire tribal members unless it’s for consulting purposes) are scarce and often at least an hour’s drive away. Tribal police is scarce. Alcoholism and drug abuse is everywhere, but forget about mental health, or even regular healthcare treatment. If there’s a health facility on the reservation, you have to remember how large these places are and it can take an hour or two to reach. When you do reach them, they are typically crap facilities and understaffed. For them to get the same kind of care Congress is supposed to deliver, to even match that of federal prisons, Congress would have to double the budget, and they consistently take money away from that budget. To match what is needed for Medicaid, funding would need to be even higher. Even grocery stores are scarce and what they have is insanely overpriced and of such a low quality, it would be illegal to give it to prisoners and non-reservation stores would toss it. With so much poverty, to have a vehicle that can travel the hours to and from a decent mental health facility, the doctor’s office, and even the grocery store, many just don’t get those basic needs met. It’s hard for outside state and private agencies to assist as they are predominantly white and can’t really do anything due to federal regulations. Tribal law enforcement is just how you saw on screen, understaffed and underfunded to an almost laughable degree. If what currently goes on in an Indian reservation happened to any county in the US - the rest of the country would be up in arms. They have no power, legal authority, and their land is still being pillaged by the federal government that has taken away all their legal authority and given sh*t-all back by way of funding when they still make 100’s of millions off that land. The federal government gave these tribes these reservations as it was thought it was useless land no one would move to anyway, but they found ways to benefit from the land so they continue to take from them every day. Tribes are powerless and many have lost their hearts due to actions by the federal government’s past attempts (I think the 1970’s, early 80’s were when they last of the re-education “schools” were closed but don’t quote me. It’s recent enough people in their early 60’s were taken). The long-term psychological effect these different programs have made on tribes cannot be quantified, but you can see it in the addiction and poverty levels of those living on reservations. Every effect has a root cause, imagine having your great great grandparents being taken from their homes and put in places their tribes were not familiar with, with unforgiving land and weather, then when they manage to do something, having your grandparents and parents forcibly taken from their parents to be placed in re-education camps where their native names and languages were beat out of them, then when your parents were around the federal government passed a law that made it impossible to for tribes to prosecute non-tribal members for crimes committed on the reservation - and then for the last 20 years the federal government has been coming into your tribal land and building damns that create massive lakes on your land to provide cities neighboring your reservation with electricity, or drilling rigs to rape the earth of its oil. The tribes have no control over that. Imagine the suffocating hopelessness of living in a rural place that really has no opportunities, where alcohol and drug abuse are everywhere, there is no help, it takes hours to drive to anywhere that has decent facilities, and knowing you have no power to do anything about it. Unless you, as a non-native person have been fighting against the ongoing atrocities continuing on Reservations, then you SHOULD have some self loathing and a sense of shame that should turn you to research this so you can educate yourself.

America is so like Australia on its main issues it's frightning. Gun control ? Australia had a huge massacre in the 90s, the worst at the time, with monthly gun massacres like the US. They finally decided to ban guns, and now no more massacres. They have the same problematic with natives than the US : they put them in reserves, where they're unemployed, drugged and drunk, with violence and rape issues. The Federal government more or less ignores them, only gives them natural land here and there. When they get a bit richer, it's on what's in the ground : gold, coal, iron, uranium. Wildlife ? The US has a huge problem with horses that destroy nature, they don't belong here. Guess what, same thing in Australia. Get rid of them ? No no those cowboys don't want you to they're all about the culture you know... National Parks ? Sure as long as there isn't oil to drill there or coal to dig... And it's frightening to see they don't get any lesson from either. The US should take lessons about gun control, Australia should take lessons about National Parks (they're far more important in the US and harder to destroy by greedy industrialists than in Australia). None can take lesson from the other about native people because they both SUCK on this issue... Maybe Evo Morales, a native Bolivian who's been president for 11 years will show them the way... Coz no other nation has (yeah I'm looking at you Canada, Mexico and Russia...).

Why did she run away? And why call her a warrior for that? If their situations had been reversed, and her lover had run off leaving her to be beaten to death, would you have called HIM a warrior? Why didn't she pick up a knife, or a bottle of bleach, or a heavy frying pan from the kitchen area and take out one or two of those men? Or even set the trailer on fire. Even if she would have ended up murdered by them, wouldn't it have been a less painful death then running through snow barefoot and suffocating in her own blood? No one familiar with winter conditions would set out with no destination, running into the woods at night, alone, in frigid weather.
