Built for Group B: 1984 Mitsubishi Starion 4WD Rally - 4G63 Turbo

The Mitsubishi Auto Gallery is an odd place. Though filled with gems, it remains one of Japan's best kept automotive secret. Down the back of the collection is this 1 of 5 (1 of 3 surviving) 4WD short nose, rally Starion.
Engine is a turbo intercooled 4G63, SOHC engine. It car weighs in at just about 1000 kg thanks to numerous carbon fibre suspension & drive-train components. Weigh is the body has also been reduced thanks to copious use of light-weight fibreglass panels.

I got taken for a ride in one of the Group B Starion's with Penti Arikalla, as my step father was working for Mitsubishi UK at the time, I think they were either testing or had entered a rally in Wales, prob is I wasn't really into Rally cars at the time so didnt pay much attention. Only thing I can remember is the clutch cost about £5000 at the time and Penti had been through a few.

I was wondering if and when someone would mention Sega GT 2002. Man the Starion 4WD was annoying in the Group B section of the races. It was just so friggin fast. Too bad I couldn't bring my glitched Corvette C5 into the race...I don't know what the hell I did to it exactly, but I did some custom tuning in the garage and for some reason it revs abnormally high, has ridiculously long gears, and no apparent top speed. In the longest section of the game I was able to achieve about 273 or so mph, which sounds completely bogus but I'm dead serious, I've got a glitched dark red Corvette C5 with broken gears, but broken in a way that it's super beneficial.

This car is very rare. A company called HKS made another possibly even lighter version of this car with an even more strange looking front. 350 bhp 4wd and around 950 kg would have been quiet succesfull during the group B era but probably not as high ranked as the top cars like Audi, Lancia and Peugeot according to the stats of it.

The cylinder head on the engine is most likely the jet valve head. I have the same engine family in my Cordia, the 4G62T 12valve engine. Nice place.

Robert Hale late but nope! If it has a third valve or 2nd intake valve that opens up at 2200 or whatever he said then it's more like a really early version of vvt. Lol not v-tech but something similar. Lol if it was the jet valve monstrosity that most of us StarQuest owners have dealt with over the years, it sure wouldn't have finished many races! From my understanding HK$ built the head.

This body is an 82 starion, only sold in japan and onlh a handfull made. . It is different than the 83 and newer ones in a few ways, like no turbo, and I think no power steering, and no pop up headlights and of course AWD. My car (1983), was built in december 82, and has the newer front style with pop up headlights, turbo, 4g54b and hood scoop, sold in US.

Awesome! I love Starions and I think the shorter nosed version looks more aggressive than the one with the popup headlights. Which is by the way similar to what Toyota did to the Celica TA64: shorten the nose, raise the hood a bit and install fixed headlights. Maybe it had to do with certain height rules around the headlights? QOTD: I would like to have a Hasemi Skyline KDR30 Super Silhouette replica!

I actually looked it up. For Group B there were no rules regarding the headlights and that was the whole point: for Group A the headlights were allowed to be modified if they were popup ones (but only the mechanism was allowed to be altered) so for group B they were allowed to chop them off and that gave them more weight reduction. Probably they shaved a good 70 to 80kgs off the scales.

2 halved a Starion for my mate one was a 2.0L the other was 2.6 L so he kept the 2.6 and to find the 2.0L was slightly faster , that engine went in another mates ford Pop hot rod .

From what i've read the Starion did well in Group A and N doing circuit racing when it was RWD but when it was changed to 4WD for rally it wasn't very competitive. Still a beast of a car though. QOTD. I'd love a HF Lacia Delta Group A rally car with the Martini vinyls or a Escort MK2 Zakspeed Group 5.

you like peter brock? i don't know if i told you this before, but one of my father's school friend has peter brock's corvette from 1964? the one without the double window in the back. he couldn't take it out of customs or something back in the day, so it went to auction and my father's friend father got the car and gave it to his son. he still owns the car. amazing isn't it? question of the day: i was thinking on the Toyota 7 but everything is not Japan. i'm thinking German this time. i want any silver arrow replica. they look so good and they must be easy to build.

He raced 510 Bluebirds, and Hino Contessas too, I think. And, there was an Australian Peter Brock who raced mainly Holdens. I guess it doesn't really matter. There are at least 3, and if i recall correctly one is RWD only version. One can be seen in a Goodwood FOS video and the other two I believe are in a private collection. It is sad that Group B was cancelled before they could race.

Ty U. Yes it is :) Since it's a Japanese car, it is still a SA22C though. It's the Turbo unicorn version. Less than 2000 were produced by Mazda in 1984 and 1985 only in Japan. This specific one has been tuned and lightness has been added (bumper delete, fiber hood, lighter doors and a few other things... The car weights a bit less than 950kg instead of its original 1030kg for the turbo version), and power has been bumped up to 180/190hp (maybe more but my butt dyno has doubts on that lol) instead of the original 165hp it came with... I have yet to do track days videos of it, but you can see a quick onboard run of the car in my video list if you want :) Cheers, Flavien

+traxnada that's awesome man, mine's a 1983 US spec NA GSL carbureted which put 101 to the crank in 83 but it's a 150k mile car which has had a bit of a rough life. I'm making maybe 60 at the rear wheels now but it's got the LSD so it gets sideways on stock suspension. My engine loses power due to a belt slip at high revs (broken tach) and the front main seal (maybe wrong name) leaks pretty badly. I still love it though.

+Ty U. I have the occasionnal alternator belt slip as well. Double pulley coming soon will fix this with no problem though :) I'll use the main pulley that normally powers the AC for that, but well... I prefer to sweat than to get my acceleration cut off lol

MC Taipan its hard to say with the lack of rallies the starion entered.the metros however were doing well vs the lancia S4's and certainly showed it when on tarmac (Irish rally)

+Dylan Tye the first iteration of the 4G63T was indeed single cam. it only became twincam when it was fitted to the Galant VR-4. 4G93 also came both single and twin cam.
