I just purchased a 2022 version (white one)...I know Hondas should be red...but it looks great. Once I master riding it and the 1 year drivetrain warranty expires I want to uncorked it a bit. Probably just remove the smog garbage and a new pipe/carb rejet. God bless the USA and Kaplan America!

Congrats on getting 1. It really is that simple. I removed my smog stuff and changed the main jet and the main jet alone made such a difference it was incredible. Have fun they are great bikes

I had a water-cooled '03 XR650R that was street plated and legal in California, of all places. It had been street registered in '04 and the DMV there stopped street plating dirt bikes due to "emissions" and "no DOT safety gear" and other vapid reasons about a year after that bike got its street plate on it. Used a Baja Designs light kit w/battery backup and had a small mirror on the left bar end, and I put billet hubs & 17" wheels on it to super motard it, and used a 39 tooth back sprocket w/one tooth larger countersprocket which gave it a 110 mph top end. It would outrun any sportbike on a tight mountain road no problem, and returned me 45 mpg to boot! This bike was a daily driver for me for about a year or better, only complaint was kick start only. Sold it the following year to a guy in northern CA, got my $$ back out of it and then some. Fun bikes, these Honda thumpers! Thanks man!

Beautiful! … I’ve had approx. 30 bikes over the past 45 years or so, but I’ve never had two of the main bikes I’ve always wanted; An XR-75 from any year between 1974-1978, and an XR650. My current XR200 is great, but it doesn’t count in that primary wish list. I think it’s HORRIBLE, what they did by changing the new ones to all white! Bring back the RED XR650s! I sure wish I could afford that one right now!

I had a AL Baker 670 ported head big fin kit flat side carb unbelievable power I was told almost 60hp by owner who built the bike and it was a 1993 first year mint condition!

Mine was an 03, identical , 39 horses stock. Not sure where you heard 30 ? I was told by a local motorcycle guru to ride this bike like it was stolen. Rev it up , do not lug this design. lugging this design will hone the cylinder walls shiny and remove the machining grooves that help hold oil. I learned to rev this motor and that is when it come s to life ( your comment about it being a slug when stock) Wow, how opinions can vary. Love this design, bullet proof bike.Sweet ride.

Crank HP (ie, 'claimed' HP) vs RWHP. They dyno'd the back wheel before & after. Stock RWHP is about 30 (and this number changes with tire used). Dyno shows, and always has, where the power is on these bikes, and it's down low. Plenty of torque, but revving the hell out of it is pointless. Not really an opinion, just a fact, backed up by actual measurements on actual instruments. The myriad 'opinions' just don't match the numbers. This whole build was documented start to finish, the videos are great, you should check them out.

I used mine (07) to commute on a 2 lane mountain road (Ortega Hwy, socal) for over 28,000 and rarely did it see any type of hi rpms, that's not where the torque is. And it just goes flat the more you rev it so I don't get it. But it's awesome having some low-end passing grunt when needed...BRaP!! Because I'm splitting lanes most of the time (peak commute time is often stop and go), we pulled a single baffle to help being heard as I slide thru. A usually gave a blip or two notice if they weren't already over and letting me pass. And I'm only guessing, but I'd venture to say that rarely did the R's go beyond 1000. What do these things supposedly redline at, anyway?

The only problem with these bikes is the counter shaft because there's no dampening in the rear at the sprocket to the hub in the wheel. They will strip the counter shaft splines off right at the sprocket.

I just watched the engine build video...not bad.. In 2017 I completed my 9yr build(took that long to buy and/or build all the parts) and did a similar mod to my engine. However, my 1986 XL600r pushes..... 47.5HP....., with standard bore 11.5:1 piston, Megacycle cam, hand porting, 1mm oversize valves, hand built dual 1.5" exhaust with ZX10 cans, etc.... I guess a DUAL is in order......! I can't post any proof on this message board. But, go to Wolfe Wheels, photos, albums, XL600 Supermoto project and you'll see the proof! (ps... Wizard may be interested on how I did it...??)

Throughout the years of running bikes, the most common part I would have to replace was the chain and the sprockets, I've always wondered why they couldn't build better stronger sprockets that don't get the teeth bent over after 2 or 3,000 miles, that's what bone stock engines, I can't even imagine how often you would have to replace them on this one

Fine looking bike. That bike will sell very quickly. I have no doubt. All of your buddy Justin's Bike are Top Shelf with a motorcycle store's worth of extra parts that come.with each bike. I remember Justin telling you in a video, if I remember correctly, that he plans on retiring soon, and possibly working for you as a Parts Manager. He would be a highly useful and knowledgeable, huge asset to your company. He's a super cool, humble,and good dude. Kyle, My Brother, I'm not trying to act like the common known everyday Internet Karen, But Brother, For The Love of God, your brain, and your existence, please start wearing your helmet, brother..You're a highly skilled and talented rider, but bro, it's not worth risking your life, future, brain power, and ability to function, when you chance riding with a helmet. Everybody falls, at one time or another, just like you accidentally and unexpectedly did...Your brilliant and highly talented brother....don't risk your health and future brother, just to ride a little bit more comfortably. Besides, some big or insect, when you're hauling ass on the bike, could possibly, and unexpectedly, fly into one of your eyes, when you're not willing to wear a helmet, and it could cause you to have a very bad and serious wreck, that could possibly kill you, paralyze you, or reduce to a vegetable. I'm nog, by any means purposely trying to be a pain in your ass, just say what I say because I truly care! Just not worth the risk brother. I don't and won't ever ride a motorcycle without a helmet. I would feel like I was riding naked. Lol....Same as a car that doesn't have a seatbelt, or that doesn't have any that work, because they're all broken already....I'm not driving the car, nor am I riding as a passenger in it. It's proven to me, a few times, many years ago, how seatbelts can, and did, save my life, when I was involved in 2 very bad wrecks, that were out of the blue, and unexpected. In europe the last aircooled 600 was the 2000.after that we had the liquid cooled 650.this 650 L never came.

I ride a 1999 36000km bored over 680 high compression ,desmogged, d606 tires, single track off road bush bike . The Rocky Mountain logging roads are where this bike is at home. One of most versatile bikes ever, my go to ride. Cheers

I own one of these myself. They did every single thing you need to do to make the stock one nice, bars pegs jetting tires sprockets chain then added the engine package to just finish it off. Really nice job guys. The winner of this is going to love it. Great build.

Believe it or not I have a buddy by the name of Chaz who has an 01 XR650R and I’ve seen that man keep his front wheel up at 100+ mph so long that his front wheel will stop and smokes when he brings it back down. I love you’re guys build though! Makes me wish I never sold my XR😢

I have been wanting to get one of these bikes for years now. This year I decided I am more serious about getting one. My searching XR650L's on youtube this past year introduced me to Kaplan Cycles via your build video's for this particular bike. Since then, I have come to really appreciate all of you, what you do and I relate to Ken Sr by age and the bikes I had in the 70's and 80's as a kid/teen living in PA across the Delaware River from Jersey. I keep up with and enjoy every video you guys put out. The thought of a chance to own this particular XR650(670)L has got me thinking that would be absolutely awesome to have! Maybe, maybe not.
