Voters in Bukimbiri County in Kisoo district are calling for the creation of a separate district to improve access to services and infrastructure.
The demand comes from residents across the county, including Nock Ndazigaruye, a voter from Ikamiro village in Nyundo Sub County; Andrew Salongo Gakyaro Horizon from Birara village, Kagunga Parish in Bukimbiri Sub County; and Lamech Duhimbaze, a voter from Nyakamo Town Council. These voters raised their concerns during interactions with candidates vying for the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament seat. Among the candidates engaging with the electorate were Independent Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, Meble Ingabire of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), and Kabagyeni from the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The voters expressed that the elevation of Bukimbiri from a county to a district would significantly improve access to essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure, which are currently limited by the county's status within Kisoro District. In response, candidates such as Akifeza and Ingabire assured residents that, if elected, they would advocate for the proposal at higher government levels. Both pledged to raise the issue with relevant authorities to initiate discussions on Bukimbiri's possible district status. The calls for district elevation reflect a growing desire among Bukimbiri's residents to have more localized governance and development, closer to their daily needs.
