Just out of curiosity. Native speaker could tell the difference of the pronounce "lewd = /luːd/" and "rude = /ruːd/"? or they can only tell from the context?

Overshadow means that because of one thing, another thing seems less important; the first thing overshadows the second thing. In this example, the racist insults overshadowed the football match: the football match seems less important because of the racism.
