Bulge Busting 40 Cal Cases!

In this video I outline the steps I use to bulge bust the 'Glock Bulge' out of my 40 cal range brass that I use for practice and competition. I use the Redding carbide version of the die. Redding makes 2 versions and although the carbide die is more expensive (about $100 vs $50), it'll never wear out. Much faster bulge busting with a Lee APP. Lube, then FL size the case first then bulge bust. Sizing first reduces the force required to push through the die.

Why are you lubing the cases if the redding die is carbide? It doesn’t hurt to lube them but it isn’t necessary.

Thanks for watching! Yes, you don't need to, but when I didn't, I was working up a sweat just bulge busting! Plus, I lube them before I run them though my progressive anyway (for the same reason), and enough lube stays on them, so it works for both operations. It also generates quite a bit of heat if you keep up a good rhythm and the lube cuts down on that. I'll do a 1,000 cases at a time, and it just makes it easier.

If you have a completed cartridge with bulge that wont chamber, can you just send it through and fix it

Thanks for watching! Well, just as they say to never try to re-seat a primer into a loaded cartridge, I'd have to recommend against it. All you'd need is for some reason the primer to detonate and you'd get seriously injured. Just pull the bullet with one of those hammer-type pullers, remove the powder and then try to run it through the bulge busting die--or just toss that entire cartridge and forget about it.

Thanks for watching! Now, this is all theoretical, but no. Even with me using a Redding resizing die and having it screwed all the way in the toolhead--to the point where it touches the shellplate when the ram is at the top of the stroke, the die doesn't get to that part of the case. Since these are my competition cases, I just won't take the risk of not bulge busting. I'll tell you, 99% of the cases I bulge bust take a significant amount of force to get through the press during the process--and I pre-lube the cases. Most of the range brass I get has been most likely fired from a Glock.
