My oldest sister's bulimia left her tongue destroyed with deep cracks in the surface even before she was 18 years old. I was barely 3 when I first noticed something very wrong and disturbingly different about her tongue. No adult did anything, but a 3-year-old child knew she needed to see "the doctor". Growing up with narcissists isn't for the weak that's for sure.

I think discussions about food/eating are interesting, Freud was all about sexuality, but our relationship with eating to me seems even more archaic. Its our most primal need. As specially now we have so many different obsessive dietary patterns, and as a vegan i have never really believed that my choice was rational or ethical in its basis. And i think the whole "eating disorder" is misleading, as people often think it can be solved by changing the eating habits. But like you mention, you have gone through all of them. It simply morphs, and finds new ways to express itself.

Yes - totally agree and so interesting to hear your thoughts. I also thing eating disorders are interesting because they are a direct attempt to circumvent our biology, in its most basic and primal - to have power over it. That's interesting and worthing noting.

I was listening to a psy lecture on KZbin how in Freud times, expressing sexuality was women's main neurosis, thus hysteria. Once we went through the sexual revolution and all of that, physical appearance and eating disorders became the main neurosis. Makes sense imo.

Just wanted to point out the inaccuracy in food being the humans primary need. There is published research studeis that confirm connection is our priminary need. Rat park and the mechanical infant monkey experiment both confirm the need of attachment trumps the need for nutrition is the priminal, earliest need.

I love these conversations with "professionals" and hope there are further to come with Mariam. Its binge eating with me but find the whole topic fascinating. Thanks as always

"Getting rid" was not about calories. I wanted to be numb. Kinda still do, even though I no longer purge.

12:25 I think this is a lot about individuation, like you express that it was yours. That the key problem on borderlines is in the individuation and separation, this is also the problem if you happen to have a borderline mother. Its extremely hard to separate from a person who does not see you as a separate person but as a extensions of themselves. And to separate, you need aggression. People often mix anger and aggression, aggression. You cant really do much in life, if you think that being aggressive is wrong. And that's exactly the signal you get via a mother who does not want to separate from her children. They subtly signal that aggression is wrong.

Such awesome communication and explanation! Very obvious that you have a lot of practice talking to one another. Thanks for using that to present in such an informative and engaging manner. P.S. that sweater is amazing.

As someone who struggled with bulimia for years and many other eating disorders and has BPD I literally died laughing at “it’s not pretty, you’re hanging around toilets” “it’s sorta the heroin of eating disorders” lmfaooooo 😂😂

5:48 My solution for what you're saying (because I feel it helped process a lot for me) was to start primal screaming into a towel in my car while I am driving places where people won't typically hear it. I mean, hopefully anyway. I realized it was partially an emotional release.

The director keeps talking over the guest, and jumping into questions and comments too fast. It is jarring.

I don't know she just kind of rambles on like the mosquito thing she could have just said a mosquito bite you and you're really itchy get to the point point? You didn't include a lot of words that weren't relevant

It is because the conversation is in a big big way related to her disordered eating and when you feel comfortable about talking about it with a professional who puts you at ease, your mind starts to race all these questions out of sheer curiosity. I can get your frustration tho but everyone is different!
