How to store all your stuff in one spot, efficient use of space and cuts down on game calculations. Should help with performance as well. With all those benefits everyone should be doing it.

One recommendation is placing a pneumatic door over your pile. Reason being that if for some reason a vole eats it, they will reduce 50% of your dirt, iron ore, and regolith, and if I recall correctly, create a huge pillar of material - not fun! Having that door would completely limit their access.

I use that from the early game, I place a tile of water so I can store Bleach Stone and build a natural reserve around it, so the dup will gain the room bonus every time they want to take or leave materials. but soon I will need to modified it so I could use Auto-Sweeper without loosing the room bonus.

Love the videos, I find listening to your explanations so much more conducive to actually learning the game than some others I've watched. These tutorial nuggets are one of the best things for learning this game I've seen yet. If you are taking recommendations I would love to see one on a cooling setup. I've tried replicating your cooling system from your old industrial brick video and I just can't wrap my head around it works. I try to make it a rule not to just blindly build something without understanding how it fundamentally works but I just can't figure it out on this one. I get that the heat is being pushed into the petro going to the generators but I don't understand how the water in the right tank gets so cold. Do aquatuners just expel heat until the liquid inside is at 0K? Anyway great videos, I love that you provide saves because it can be hard to see layouts of set ups. A recommendation I always have is to provide a time stamped section where you show the blueprint and cycle through the various overlays. Also thanks for helping me get to cycle 500!

Take it to the next step. sweep all those items into a vacuum room with no access (restricted or no door at all) depending on what you want. Then you can either only allow a certain dupes in or automate it by having a few sweepers in that room distributing items to accessible bins outside the room or another vacuum area. No heat calculations or excessive dupe trail calculations.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 5 жыл бұрын
That sounds hard, well it sounds like it might be a bit tricky to setup. Tutorial was more brute force and simplicity. There are some systems out there when you have two types of dupe, those who provide building material and thoose who sweep up loose material. With door restrictions this results in everything being swept up.

ive found a very reliable way to have centralised storage without having the dupes go back and forth, all you need is door blocking the item dumpers and only allow access to each side for certain dupes, i have 4 dupes whos sole purpose is to go around the map and collect everything to dump in the centralised storage but because they're not allowed to access the storage they dont loop it around. its a very easy way to get everything without having to use sweep commands constantly, you can also have some storage bins on a low priority that everyone can access which your storage dupes will then take from and dump into the centralised one. its a perfect system as long as you can afford to lose a few dupes to it as they wont have access to any materials except whats laying on the map

This is an amazing concept and I thank you for all the work you have done and shared with this game, I am facing a bug I think though with this method. I am ending up with multiple stacks of the same material, lets say sand for example, there are 4+ stacks of this at varying temperatures, they all came from bins (I was using a massive storage area, but have been noticing the game slowing down a bit) and I wonder if this is the problem. They stack and normalize temps in regular bins, but storing it this way doesnt seem to work well for me for some reason
@FrancisJohnYT

Debris piles only go up to 25 tons, after that they start forming additional debris piles. It's not easy to even the temps between them all, it's a good idea not to store stuff their that can melt easily. But if you want to even out the temp you could drop in some Oil to help conduct the heat.

does this really save performance though? it still has to calculate everything but just in one tile or not? Would storing everything in a hundred boxes still be better performance wise?
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 жыл бұрын
I had great improvements doing this in the previous versions, don't know if the patches have made a change. The reasons it should help is you only have to calculate gas heat exchange with the gas in the tiles it's in not dozens if not hundreds of tiles it's scattered across. When a dupe goes to collect rock to build a tile the game calculates the closest piece, if it's all in one space that's a lot less calculations.

@@FrancisJohnYT Hmmm that would be a challenge. So guess to say that using this near one's base would have a certain temperature range of materials to be allowed to be stored here via sweep only. What would be that safe range of temperature of materials, maybe 25°-35°C or 20°-50°C if cooled with ice storage/dripping cold water? And of course extremely high temp items will never be stored here. Sorry new to the game and still learning the mechanics.

@cortholiopezorama8879

I have an “auto kitchen.” sterile atmo behind a water lock. Dupes access two conveyor loaders from outside, one for the stove one for the oven. Ingredients drop to the floor inside a locked room where they are loaded onto individual ingredient rails. From there they pass to receivers that auto load the cooks. Note: food will rot inside solid tiles so use mesh/ airflow inside the kitchen area on any line that might backlog into a floor/wall tile.

I'm not sure is the short answer. Long answer is even if it did improve performance it should be a tiny gain. Additionally if you place every thing on an insulated tile made of insulation and keep them in a vacuum then they are to all intensive purposes unable to interact with each other anyway.

Didn't you make the argument some months ago that centralized storage is bad, because you sweep all the building materials to one location which makes dupes travel a lot more, and instead it's much more efficient to just have everything laying around and to use biome-specific building materials that are laying around close by to build things?
@blubbber
@blubbber 5 жыл бұрын
yes and no :D Leaving stuff laying around helps if you are building at the moment there. Otherwise a dupe has to calculate the closest route to every ressource of the material in case he wants to deliver something.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 5 жыл бұрын
Early game leave it lying around it's faster for dupes to pick stuff up from nearby. Late game it becomes an FPS liability, sweeping up almost doubled my FPS first time I did it. Though in that instance I had let it go on for way to long. In game time your dupes will have to do a bit more walking to pick up materials, but in real time you will get way more done. Also later in the game your dupes will all have high athletics and the goofer ability.

@@FrancisJohnYT Makes perfect sense when you explain it that way, but this paradigm shift every dozen cycles in every single one of the dozen+ aspects of the game is quite tiresome. Do this at cycle 10, do that at cycle 18, then that at 27.... and then do the complete polar opposite at cycle 400. Meh... Anyway, don't let my personal gripe with the game stop you from doing all these tutorial tidbits, they are insanely useful for everyone who is enthused about the game more than I am, and you are a pretty good communicator. Sometimes I can't decide what's killing the fun more, being casual to the point of being inefficient, or being organized, to the point of repeating the same steps on every single map in every playthrough. This game completely burns me out, and this is coming from someone who's involved in the management of cross-border business-oriented projects for a living.

Exactly how does this change how I set up my outhouses, how I set up my flush toilets, how I... get it? It's always the same crap, and you improve on these systems the very same way as you progress through the cycles on every single map. But this wasn't the point I was trying to make, so let's not sidetrack this discussion in a direction I don't want it to go. The main argument was that it simply bothers me to hell that you do the same thing twice in perfectly opposite ways, depending on how far you've progressed in the game.

I have two areas... 1. Dropoff (not sweep only) - with everybody other than builders & suppliers with access, but builders & suppliers have NO access 2. Supply (with more droppers that are sweep only) - with only builders & suppliers with access, and nobody else. Now non build/supply will randomly clean stuff up. And build/supply will help if I set things to sweep. It slows down build a bit since only suppliers can supply. But it keeps a cleaner base since you'll still clean stuff up even if the dupes just drop it randomly Also, you have to watch out with random containers. If you make a sand bin for sand near a water siv, supply dupes will supply sand to the bin. Non-supply will take the sand out of the bin and move it to the storage again. In an infinite loop. So any bin you'll need to limit access to only suppliers just like your large supply storage area.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 5 жыл бұрын
This gives me an idea, what if I limit the pickup area so everyone but 2 dupes can access it. Then have those two dupes be the only ones able to access a top level drop of. Thoose two will constantly be scouring the map for loose debris and collecting it up. Meanwhile every other dupe can use the pile as normal and help out with big sweeps if necessary.
