Lek, this is the most wonderful thing I've ever heard. To understand that his nature is not his doing and that he still needs freedom and kindness. I have heard that elephants in musth suffer massive headaches. His pool can't but help sooth what he is experiencing.

Lek's compassion for helping the rescued, captive elephant, knows no bounds. I visited a few sanctuaries in Thailand and her motives have the best interests of the elephant at heart. There are other sanctuaries that treat them well, but at least one, chained them at night so the mahout's could sleep. One told us, they had a hard time finding young mahout's ( they have to agree not use bullhooks), because males are more unpredictable and dangerous due to musth. Bravo Lek, for finding a way to keep those chains off! Elephant Nature Park is a great place to donate funds.🇨🇦

No, not bad. Musth makes him more aggressive. In captivity it must really frustrate the bulls, not to have a release at that time.

People can learn more by going to his elephant database page, the url of which I posted in my ENP Babes playlist Description. In 2018, Hope killed his mahout. It has been reported, not by ENP, that he was sold afterward, and that he is now dead. What we do know is that we have seen no recent video of either him or Jungle Boy (a year younger at what would now be 21), in multiple years now, so it seems they are gone. It's very sad, and ENP doesn't answer polite questions about serious concerns.

Hope killed his mahout in 2018: you can see more information on his elephant database page. Navann's trunk has been cut, damage that permanently opens his left nostril; the url of that video is also posted in that same playlist description. Elephants were not designed for captivity, captivity is not Conservation, conserving wild animals in the Wild is conservation. Elephants were designed for the Wilds, where they can live their purpose and freely fulfill it as the Keystone species that they are. They were not designed to obey man, but mahouts demand that they obey, which creates a battle that should not be sought. We have not seen a recent video of either Hope or Jungle Boy in multiple years; it seems they are both gone. See Hope's elephant database page, and see the final video in that same playlist, my ENP Babes playlist. Keep in mind that no elephant allows anyone to ride him or her, not even their mahout, unless they have been put through "training" to submit to man. (Jungle Boy was not forced through Crush as a babe, so . . ? ) What we see in that video is not the mahout "playing" with Jungle Boy, but maintaining control *over Jungle Boy. That video will show you things you may not have known, that many of us had not known.

Came here after one of the mahouts of this place was dead in December 2018 from a bull elephant in musth. A failure of controlling aggressive elephants? Do not block me as I want to know how do you take care of the bull elephant now with MORE security to your keepers.

Yes, a bull named Hope killed his mahout, in December of 2018. Everyone can see Hope's elephant database page, which is posted in my ENP Babes playlist Description. We haven't seen any recent video of Hope or Jungle Boy in multiple years, they may be gone, one report said that Hope was sold and then dead > see his elephant database page. I fear for Chang Yim, Navann (who already has suffered trunk damage, see the video url for that in that same playlist Description), for Yindee, Dok Rak and the others. They don't belong in captivity, but in the Wild.

One time, about 3 months ago, at another video, you said to me that you believed the people at that ENP-backed elephant camp up in the mountains could still not be trusted to be completely respectful to the elephants, and I countered you then. I don't now. I have learned so much in the last 2 weeks about things that go on at E, that I am very grieved. See the final video in my ENP Babes playlist and you'd be shocked, I believe. Understanding that no elephant will allow anyone to ride him, including his mahout, unless he is first put through "training" to submit to man, gives us an all new understanding of the scene we see there of Jungle Boy in the river. See what is in that mahout's hands. See the urls I posted in the playlist Description, read at those pages. Seriously. I am very grieved. You were right: none of them are trustworthy.

I may be wrong, but I have heard of a method to chemically castrate bull elephants through vaccines that has been used on the African species. It’s not a complete castration, so the bulls can still potentially breed, but it does tackle the “problem” with Musth. The testicles are diminished in size and efficiency (sperm count is greatly decreased), which leads to lower testosterone levels, and it results in diminished Musth behaviors. The bulls may still express some Musth traits (glands and dribbling urine), but I imagine that they are a lot less aggressive due to the diminished pain. However, the major concern with this is that we want elephants to be breeding, in order to restore wild populations. I would also imagine that the vaccinations are expensive to produce. Plus, I don’t think there is any records on how these vaccines may impact the elephants’ overall health and lifespans. Thus, this method is still controversial and not entirely preferable for elephant caretakers.

@@Automedon2 For readers here that might not know, "Bo" is an example of a gelded male elephant; he is at Carol Buckley's Elephant Refuge N. America in Georgia, keeping Tarra company.

@@cacatr4495 Gelding is very good. The only purpose to breed elepants in the west is for more captives. Un-neutered elephants are extremely dangerous and require very harsh containment in captivity. That is why there is only one sanctuary in the country that accepts them (PAWS in California, that set up specifically to handle and house them). The very last thing this world needs is more captive elephants. Captive breeding of wild animals has one singular purpose - to produce more zoo animals. Enough with that shit already.

Captivity is not conservation: elephants require full freedom. Hope and Jungle Boy have shown this, but most viewers here do not realize what most of us have not known.

Musth is extremely uncomfortable. It is an increase of 50 times the testosterone and they suffer massive headaches. In the wild they sometimes drive their foreheads into trees until they are raw.

Significant sugary fruit, they say, triggers Musth in bulls. They have pools now, but they used to take them to the river for a swim, but that meant putting the bulls through "training" so they could ride their necks to the river, which can be seen in the last video of my ENP Babes playlist. No elephant will ever let anyone, including their mahout, ride them, unless they have been put through "training" to submit to man. We haven't seen any recent video of either Hope or Jungle Boy. Please read that, see the other urls there, it's important, and see that final video there. There is so much we haven't known.

The babies are usually rescues. The female adults are often much older, blind, permanently lame/injured so it's not wise to have an aggressive bull attempt to mate with them. Those females could be seriously injured. It's not safe for many of these females to even be pregnant. I have no doubt some mahouts will allow their elephants to breed but an uncontrolled bull in musth is extremely dangerous. This sanctuary is not a breeding facility.

What has been traditional in that part of the world is that the elephant industry force-breeds bulls and females, not allowing elephants to breed naturally. It causes extreme stress, trauma, and injuries, and they *will mate if people would just back off. At ENP, females in season who desire to breed, have gone to visit the bull's enclosure, at the perimeter wall of columns: she would turn around, move her tail out of his way, and through the columns (wide enough for a big shouldered man to walk through), they breed naturally. Instead of putting his big weight up on her with his feet, he puts his feet up on the top of the wall, and uses the big space between the columns to breed her. ENP has received 6 babies this way. They have also purchased mother eles who have babies that were the result of forced breeding at the elephant camps they came from. The point of a secure enclosure for the bulls is for safety. They belong in the Wild, but in captivity, it's very dangerous for bulls to move freely among the female herds that include aged and infirmed, disabled, and baby females.
