This song describes a state of consciousness that we Hindus call Samadhi or Shunya in Buddhist terminology. It is a state which a spiritual seeker reaches where the distinction between the knower and the known disappears and there is just oneness. All the labels (of religion race country etc) made by the human mind disappear as the ego experiences temporary death ( thus the chorus - who is this bulla shah ? ) apoptotic . There is a stage of Samadhi called as Nirvikalpa Samadhi which is devoid of any form, of any polarities such as light dark, stillness travel, hot cold etc which is probably what Bulleh Shah experienced as it is evident from the text. The absolute reality in Hinduism ( Brahman ) is said to be Nirguna ( without any form ) Just like you cannot describe colour to a blind person you cannot describe Brahman to an ordinary person, You have to experience yourself. This is also probably why it is believed in Islam that the 100th name, the real name of Allah, cannot be said using words.

This song is not about identity crisis. This song describes a state of consciousness that we Hindus call Samadhi or Shunya in Buddhist terminology. It is a state which a spiritual seeker reaches where the distinction between the knower and the known disappears and there is just oneness. All the labels (of religion race country etc) made by the human mind disappear as the ego experiences temporary death ( thus the chorus - who is this bulla shah ? ) apoptotic . There is a stage of Samadhi called as Nirvikalpa Samadhi which is devoid of any form, of any polarities such as light dark, stillness travel, hot cold etc which is probably what Bulleh Shah experienced as it is evident from the text. The pinnacle of divinity is said to be Nirguna ( without any form ) as evident in Sanatan Dharma, Sikhism, Christianity. Like you cannot describe colour to a blind person you cannot describe Brahman to an ordinary person, You have to experience yourself. This is also probably why it is believed in Islam that the 100th name, the real name of Allah, cannot be said using words.
