I really love these shooter videos you guys do. They're awesome. I just purchased r type dimensions ex for PS4. First time playing I finally get a chance to dive into this legendary shooter.

I wish this game were less punishing in later stages. It's even worse than Gradius when you die! But if I can get better at it, the Master System version has an exclusive stage I'd like to check out.

As I was playing through R-Type throughout June, I put a fair bit of time into Dimensions on PS3. I didn’t realize that the arranged OST was exclusive to that version, and not part of the 360 version. Unfortunately, I couldn’t try out the coop mode, but that looks like a blast, pun intended.

Glad to see you all finally do an R-Type review! It's not R-Type 3 or R-Type Delta, but it's worth a shot for those who want to try out the series without having to go out and collect old copies of previous games.

Great review! I've been intrigued by this remaster version and didn't know it had that on-the-spot transition feature. That's pretty cool. I still have my old copy of R-Type DX for the gameboy so maybe I'll nab this to replay it again on the PS3. Speaking of PS3, I highly suggest looking into the Soldner X series on PSN. The first game was alright, but the 2nd game is where it's at.

When I played this on my 360 it was a bit too easy to accidentally switch between 2D and 3D, if memory serves. Hopefully I won't have that problem on the PS3 version. And man I hope they patch(ed) that crashing problem. Shocking! Oh I would love a physical release of this....

The 2d/3d switch can be disabled by changing the button function to, well, Anything else. As for the crashing..... i hope that gets resolved soon!!

This will be a pick up for me since any experience with R-Type has been in the arcade's from the late 1980's to the early 1990's. Sometimes all the bullets in the world aren't really needed to make a shoot'em up difficult. Just some patience and the ability to solve on the fly puzzles. I just had a thought has a shoot'em up ever been made in which you play the role of a stage boss and you get through the game by beating good guy ships.

I do enjoy r-type even if it is a pattern based shooter.I own it on the TG16 and PS1,for this remixed on the PS3 it looks like a must buy for me.I am surprised after all this time the game made it's way to the psn finally.

As the owner of the existing PlayStation R-Types compilation, is this worth picking up for PS3 for the visual and sound upgrades? And why, oh why, couldn't they have included LEO? It's so silly to me that LEO gets the shaft all the time. Sure, it's more of a "gaiden" entry, but it's still a neat game that deserves better than it has received over the years.

2:15 "though maybe not as feature heavy like Gradius" ... I not really know what you talk about here. Gradius doesn't have "more" Items to pick up, the original had Missiles, 2 Shot Styles, Options and a Shield. R-Type came with the Satelite(which is much more interesting then the Options), 3 Shot Styles, Missiles and the 2 "Balls" around the ship. Not much difference there. Though Gradius came up with more Ships in Gradius 2, they didn't change that much on those ships in later entries like Gradius 3, 4, and 5. Yeah Gradius 3 had that "Edit Mode" and Gradius Gaiden finally 2 totally new Ships, but R-Type 3/Delta came up with new Weapons/Ships too. Overall, Irem made *allot* very good Arcade Action Games ... and each was pretty unique and new. Game Classics like _Moon Patrol, Battle Chopper, Ninja Spirit, Dragon Breed, Cosmic Cop, In the Hunt or Gun Force._ Sadly not all made it to Home Consoles yet.

Gradius is less rigid in its ships weapons and defenses though, and while both suffer from crippling debilitation when the player dies later in the game, Gradius feels far less spiteful about it. It would be nice to see more Irem home ports. Hamster's Arcade Archives (アケアカ) for switch and PS4 already has Image Fight and Xmultiply on at least one of the two systems, so there's hope there.

@@StudioMudprints Yeah i get what you mean by "rigid", if you look at certain Gradius and Parodius games and just look at the ships, not all have the classic "Missile" style or "Options" in there, some have instead of "Missiles" something total different (like Twinbee in Parodius Da!), but what do you mean "Defenses"? I mean yeah in R-Type you have that Satelite that blocks bullets and lets you shoot backwards but Gradius has Shields. Yeah, if you die in Gradius it is way easier to get back to power, in R-Type you basically have to wait til a certain powerup comes around again and that can take time(like Missiles). It's quite sad, that so many Action Games nowadays "have" to be 3d polygon escapades. They could just go and port old Arcade Games, release them electronically as Low Budget for $5-10, or maybe with a higher resolution mode with redwawn graphic or 3d like this R-Type Dimensions here ... and sell it $10-20 and be done with it.

@@StudioMudprints Yeah you keep see old games released either _again_ with updated graphics ... or first time released with updated graphics. There *still is* more then enough people that want to play games like the original Super Mario Bros, Gradius/R-Type shooters, Castlevania, Contra, Mega Man. I see so many Indie games that are in that vein being made/have been released. Kinda _Saviors_ ... that give you a option to playing those AAA games with cut content added as _day 1 DLC_ and that have MTX/LootBoxes in them.

Technically, Irem is finished. Another company of ex-Irem guys is behind the recently announced RType Final 2.

It's more like R-Tyoe DX on Game Boy Color. So like, R-Type DX DX. Side note: R-Type Leo and Gallup both definitely need a better release than that horrid Irem Arcade Classics PC collection.
